Betty Stansbury Lomax: A Gift of Home

Betty Stansbury Lomax had a heartfelt connection to Catawba College and its students.

Betty Lomax

She was Assistant Professor of Physical Education at Catawba for 17 years, from 1960 to 1977. Her husband, Dr. Bobby A. Lomax, Class of 1956 was a well-regarded dentist in the Salisbury-Rowan community for decades. The couple were faithful supporters of Catawba financially, and were active members of the Chiefs Club, with Bobby serving several terms on the Chiefs Board. The couple were regarded as honorary parents and grandparents by many young people in the local community.

Bobby established the Lomax Athletic Award at Catawba College in Betty’s honor to recognize outstanding female student athletes. The award goes to a senior female athlete considered by the Athletic Department to be the best female athlete in the class. It has been awarded annually since 1965.

Additionally, Bobby established the Betty Stansbury Lomax Endowed Scholarship Fund in honor of Betty in 1992, with the criteria for the scholarship award based simply on student financial need.

Betty passed on October 2, 2022, at age 96. Years before, when considering planned giving, Betty left an estate gift to Catawba College adding to the endowed scholarship fund Bobby started. Catawba is also the residual beneficiary of her estate creating a brand new Bobby and Betty Stansbury Lomax Fund supporting athletics.
