Camden Trimmer is a junior at Catawba. He is double majoring in Theatre Arts Administration and BFA Performance, has a concentration in Directing, and is minoring in Business Administration. He is also the President of the Blue Masque Society, which is Catawba’s theatrical club.

Camden is involved in both the Catawba College theatre productions as well as the Lee Street theatre productions. Lee Street is a performing arts center in downtown Salisbury that often partners with Catawba students.

When asked about his time with Lee Street, Camden said, “I have been attending rehearsals at Lee Street since July and it has been fantastic. They never once forgot about the Catawba students and made sure we got to be really involved. I’ve gotten to see the growth of the Lee Street actors and overall, it has been a great experience.”

A recent production from both Lee Street and Catawba Camden participated in was “Jekyll and Hyde.” He attended every Lee Street rehearsal and helped when needed. He said, “The three leads from Lee Street were fantastic and when it came time for the Catawba’s production of Jekyll and Hyde, they came to our practices to help and give notes. Overall, it was a good collaboration between the two theatres.”

At the Catawba production of Jekyll and Hyde, Camden played the lead role of Dr. Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde. He noted how amazing their set was this year and how it was larger than most of the sets they have used recently.

During his time at Catawba, Camden has participated in many theatre productions. Most recently, he was in “Spring Awakening” and “Avenue Q.” He also directed the Blue Masque production “Alabaster” which was a significant undertaking as directing productions is usually reserved for seniors. Before graduation, Camden hopes to direct a main stage show and possibly a musical.

Camden feels that he truly knows what theatre is because Catawba has allowed him to experience all its avenues. “At Catawba, you have the ability to expand your skills in theatre. I have had the chance to work in tech, be on the stage, and help direct. Being on stage is the best opportunity for an actor to learn and grow, but a really good way to expand your acting abilities is to sit on the other side of the table and direct. When I go out into the world, I know I will be prepared because I have an education and experience in many areas.”

Looking forward to post-graduation, Camden plans on applying for Executive Director positions along with Theatrical Technician positions. He also has hopes to land a paying role and be cast in a Lee Street production. Camden noted that Catawba has helped provide its theatre students with numerous opportunities after graduation through internships and connections with Alumni.
