Dr. F. Eugene Hester, a scientist and government administrator who shaped federal wildlife policy at the highest levels for 25 years, will talk about his experiences with wildlife photography and illustrate memorable photographicEvents with a slide presentation Thursday, September 27, at the Center for the Environment  facility on the Catawba College campus.

Hester, a former top administrator in the U.S. Department of the Interior and past Deputy Director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife, will focus his remarks on waterfowl.

He has served as a freelance writer, photographer, wood duck researcher and professor at N.C. State University.   His recently published book, Wood Duck Adventures, chronicles his 50-year study of the wood duck.   The 42-page book is filled with color photos by the author.

A pioneer of wood duck research in the Southeast, Hester is also the author of The World of the Wood Duck, published in 1973 as part of the Living World book series. He has had countless articles and photos published in national magazines like Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, National Wildlife and Sports Afield.  In addition, he is a frequent contributor to Wildlife in North Carolina magazine with 46 cover photos to his credit.

A native of Wendell, N.C., Hester earned undergraduate and master’s degrees from N.C. State University and his doctorate in fisheries from Auburn University.   He taught at Auburn and N.C. State before his federal government service. He currently divides his time between homes in Wendell and Springfield, Va.
