Dear Students and Families,

It has finally arrived!  Welcome Weekend is in full swing and classes begin on TUESDAY, AUGUST 18th!  We are so excited to have you back on campus.  As the Weekly Update from the Provost before the beginning of classes, I wanted to share some reminders about our Return to Catawba Plan, which emphasizes:

Protecting ourselves – daily self-monitoring; frequent hand washing and sanitizing

Protecting others – maintain physical distancing, stay home if sick or symptomatic, wear face covering

Protecting the Catawba community – keep academic and work spaces clean, participate in testing and contact tracing, follow traffic pattern, stairwell, and entry/exit signs.

This week’s update includes important reminders about our COVID-19 policies that we will all follow to keep us safe!

Take the Care About Catawba Pledge:  It is only through our diligent work TOGETHER that we keep ourselves and our community safe!  Commit yourself to following our safety and well-being protocols.

Do your DAILY Self-Health Monitoring:  Catawba has developed a list of questions for students and employees to review and complete every day before entering campus.  The easiest way to complete the self-health monitoring questionnaire is by downloading the MyCatawba Mobile App to complete the assessment each day on your Apple or Android Device. To learn how to download the MyCatawba app and complete the daily self-health questionnaire, view the brief tutorial video.

Take you temperature and check your symptoms:  While COVID-19 presents with a variety of symptoms, presence of a fever is the most common.  The Daily Self-Health Monitoring questionnaire asks you to check your temperature each day before beginning your campus activities.  We encourage you to have your own thermometer for your personal use.   Additionally, we have two temperature kiosks, in the Administration Building and in the Student Center, that you can use.  You walk up to it and, using infrared cameras, it determines your temperature!  If you have a fever, please contact your professors and remain at home or in your dorm.

Complete the Self-Reporting Form (if needed):  To help us better serve you and our campus community, please complete and submit the form if:

  1. You have a confirmed case of COVID-19,
  2. You have a suspected case of COVID-19,
  3. You are directed to quarantine, or
  4. You have any other COVID-related concerns.

The form may be accessed at https://catawba.edu/news-events/coronavirus/self-reporting/

WEAR YOUR MASK!!!:  A face covering that properly covers your mouth and nose is still our very best tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  Catawba is providing 2 masks to each student; however, there are a variety of types and you can find one that feels comfortable to you and protects you and others.  For a mask, LAYERS are important.  Therefore, vented masks and neck gaiters offer little protection.

Wash your hands:  Please be sure to wash your hands multiple times throughout the day with soap and water.  In between, please use our hand sanitizing stations located in each academic building.

Follow directional signage and instructions:  Follow the signs that indicate entrances and exits and travel directions in hallways and stairs.  These are in place to help reduce traffic jams in the hallways, and allow for proper physical distancing.

Physical Distance!:  Please attempt, to the best of your abilities, at all times to remain 6 feet away from other people.

While the Fall may look different than past semesters, some things will always be the same.  Catawba’s true value and mission will always be to offer an education rich in personal attention that helps you reach your highest potential.

You may have additional questions, concerns, or feedback.  Please feel free to contact me using the “Ask the Provost” form.
