The Academy for Teaching held its annual Teacher of the Year event on Thursday, February 20, 2014.  The Freshmen West Scholars enjoyed breakfast and a panel discussion with the North Carolina Teacher of the Year Karyn Collie Dickerson and Rowan-Salisbury Schools Teacher of the Year Alex Reynolds.

Following the panel discussion, Dickerson delivered a keynote speech entitled "Illuminating the Way for Your Students" to attending members of the campus community.

Karyn Dickerson has taught English at every grade level in grades 9-12 including recovery, inclusion, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes.  She is a National Board Certified Teacher and is an English teacher at Grimsley High School. As the current NC Teacher of the Year, Dickerson is traveling the state and serving as an advocate for public education. She is an advisory member on the State Board of Education, a member of the Governor's Teacher Advisory Council and a North Carolina Education Policy Fellow.

Alex Reynolds is a dedicated educator and is currently the Theatre Arts Teacher at Carson High School.  In addition to being the current RSS Teacher of the Year, Reynolds was named the North Carolina Northwest Regional Teacher of the Year.  His unique teaching approach and love of directing has led to over 2,500 people routinely attending the annual musicals his students proudly produce.

The Teacher of the Year event was a huge success and we wish Dickerson and Reynolds continued success in their teaching endeavors.
