Two Catawba College students are among eight undergraduates who have been awarded stipends ranging from $300-$525 from North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) to support their research. The research will be presented at the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium on November 10 at North Carolina State University. 

The recipients and their research projects are:

  • Hailey Gase, a junior at Queens University of Charlotte: The effects of soursop pulp (Annona muricate) on PC12 cells.
  • Mia Elizabeth Guzynski, a junior at Davidson College: Is the NCE enhancer required for the upregulation of CD4 during antigen-specific T-cell activation in vivo?
  • Elias Henao, a junior at St. Andrews University: Effect of far UV light on antibiotic sensitivity.
  • Nabiha Khan, a junior at Meredith College: What You Donut Know about a Single Fatty Meal.
  • Ruolin Miao, a junior at Duke University: Community survey of indigenous mine site fungi and their role in plant tolerance to stress factors.
  • Macayla Upright, a junior at Catawba College: Genetic markers for determining subspecies in the Trachemys scripta freshwater turtle.
  • David Wang, a senior at Duke University: Refolding of Mechanically Perturbed Proteins via All-Atom Molecular Dynamics Simulations.
  • Wyatt Zander, a junior at Catawba College: Investigating the Effectiveness of the Antioxidant Catechin Hydrate on Artemisinin Activity in vitro.

“The level of meaningful, innovative, research being conducted on the undergraduate level is impressive,” said NCICU President A. Hope Williams, “These students will join more than 100 others from our campuses in showcasing their projects at the symposium.”

Macayla Upright of Salisbury, N.C., is pursuing a B.S. Biology major and a B.S. Environment and Sustainability major, and minoring in Chemistry at Catawba.  Biology Professor, Dr. Joe Poston, serves as her faculty mentor/sponsor.

Wyatt Zander of Rockwell, N.C., is a B.S. Biology major who is minoring in Chemistry at Catawba. He serves as president of Beta Beta Beta – Tau Eta Chapter of the Biological Honor Society. Assistant Professor of Biology, Dr. Carmony Hartwig, serves as his faculty mentor/sponsor.
