Ten student conductors will be featured during a Tuesday, Nov. 16 Wind Ensemble Concert at Catawba College. The event, "Conductors for a New Generation," is free and open to the public and begins at 7 p.m. in Keppel Auditorium of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus.
The concert is an opportunity for the upper class junior and senior student conductors enrolled in an Instrumental Conducting and Arranging course to partially fulfill their course requirements. Each of the 10 student conductors has been assigned a composition to rehearse and then to conduct during the College Wind Ensemble concert which will feature brass, woodwind and percussion instruments.
According to course instructor, Dr. Steve Etters, the student conductors not only had to rehearse their assigned musical piece in preparation for the concert, but they also had to study its score in order to provide appropriate cues to various instruments. "One of the major things they’re learning to do, " Etters explained, "is to conduct with one hand and independently cue with the other."
The musical selections assigned to the student conductors were representative of those used by upper level high school and/or church ensembles. Three of the student conductors, all sacred music majors, will be conducting pieces that are part of a sacred suite based on hymns.
Student conductors and their musical pieces for the concert include John Lincourt of Greensboro, a 2012 music performance major, conducting "Pineapple Poll (I. Opening Number)" by Sir Arthur Sullivan/Mackerras; Cory Kluttz of China Grove, a 2012 music education major, conducting "The Ascension from 'The Divine Comedy’ " by Robert W. Smith; Felicia K. Youngblood of King, a 2011 music education major, conducting "Country Gardens" by Percy Grainger/Sousa; Brent Messenger of Kannapolis, a 2012 music education major conducting "Dancing at Stonehenge" by Anthony Suter; Douglas Crawford of Salisbury, a 2012 music education/music performance major, conducting "Abrams Pursuit" by David R. Holsinger; Kristopher Watson of Voorhees, N.J., a 2011 sacred music/music performance major, conducting "Spirit of the Ages Fanfare" from "A Sacred Suite" by Brant Karrick; Corey Cullurale of Lewes, Del., a 2012 music education major, conducting "Consolation" from "A Sacred Suite" by Brant Karrick; Jennifer Drake of Salisbury, a 2011 sacred music/music performance major, conducting "True Happiness/How Firm a Foundation" from "A Sacred Suite" by Brant Karrick; Melanie Hudson of Greensboro, a 2012 music education/music performance major conducting "Mangulina" by Paul Baker; and William Tyler Howe of Salisbury, a 2011 music education major, conducting "Pineapple Poll (IV Finale)" by Sir Arthur Sullivan/Mackerras.
