George and Blanche Greene '70 Glover of Salisbury have made a gift to establish at new scholarship at Catawba College which will benefit students from Rowan County who demonstrate financial need. The George and Blanche Glover Family Endowed Scholarship honors Blanche Greene Glover and the time she was a student at Catawba.
"Where there's a want, there's a way," Blanche says. "We just wanted to do something to help and we have been close to Catawba every since we moved to Salisbury in 1965. If students are thinking about whether they can go to school or not, they need to know that there are scholarships out there."
Blanche and George met in Ellenboro, N.C., while Blanche was completing her senior year at Ellenboro High School. George had already served four years in the U.S. Air Force.
George went on to earn his bachelor's degree from North Carolina State University and the two were married for about 10 years before Blanche enrolled at Catawba. The couple moved to Salisbury after George landed a job at Fiber Industries in 1965. He later retired from Celanese which bought out Fiber Industries.
Blanche has served on the Catawba Chiefs Club Board and the couple attends Catawba football and basketball games. The two are members of John Calvin Presbyterian Church and parents of two adult children, George Douglas "Doug" Glover of Mt. Holly, N.C., and Tara Glover of Peachtree City, Ga., and grandparents of one granddaughter, Allison.
"Unassuming and supportive of the institution," is how Catawba College Senior Vice President Tom Childress describes the couple. "We are grateful for their gift to establish this scholarship. They see the need that so many young people who want an education have today and they have done their part to help meet it."
