Catawba College’s One-Act Festival will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, April 19 and 20 in the Florence Busby-Corriher Theatre on campus. This year, two one-act plays will be performed nightly during the festival which is open to the public and free of charge.
“The Bald Soprano” by Eugene Ionesco will be directed by senior John Rummage of Rockwell, and “No Exit” by Jean-Paul Sartre will be directed by sophomore McKenna Dabbs of Nashville, Tenn. Both plays, considered “absurdist” theatre, run approximately 40 minutes each and a brief intermission will separate the two.
“Bald Soprano” is a funny play set in the suburbs of London that deals with the failure or tragedy of language. Rummage’s concept for the production centers around a conflict of ideas and the inefficiencies and imperfections inherent in attempts to communicate.
“No Exit” is at the opposite end of the spectrum and deals with the darker side of realism. The production, which features only three actors, explores the concept that each person’s hell is created by interaction with other people.
