Longtime Catawba Mathematics Professor Dies

Dr. Cecil Robert "Bob" Carlton of Salisbury, a longtime mathematics professor at Catawba College, died Friday, January 31.

The Carlton family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Summersett Funeral Home in Salisbury. The funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at First Baptist Church of Salisbury.

Dr. Carlton joined the mathematics faculty at Catawba in 1981 and served for more than 20 years until his retirement. He also chaired the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at the college.

Prior to joining the faculty of Catawba, Dr. Carlton had worked at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky., in a similar capacity. A graduate of Georgetown College, he received his master's degree from Northwestern University and his doctorate from George Peabody College, now part of Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Carlton is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Bradshaw "Libby" Carlton, who also retired from Catawba College as a member of the music faculty. Other survivors include son Kevin Carlton '85, who serves on Catawba's Board of Visitors, and wife Wendy of Salisbury; daughter Dr. Karen Carlton and husband David Wong of Norwood, Mass.; two brothers; and seven grandsons.
