A portion of U.S. 601 between Salisbury and Davie County could soon bear the name of the late U.S. Rep. Earl Ruth.

Rowan County Commissioners approved a resolution today recommending that the N.C. Department of Transportation name five miles of the highway "Congressman Earl B. Ruth Memorial Highway."

Ruth, a native of Spencer, was a coach, professor, Athletic Director and Dean of Students at Catawba College before being elected to Congress in 1968. A Republican, he won re-election twice and served briefly as governor of America Samoa, from 1975 to 1976. Read more...
