Remember those 1960s teen exploitation movies that featured the surf crowd in California?  Well Catawba College’s upcoming Blue Masque theatre production of “Psycho Beach Party” promises to take you back there, almost. 

This Charles Busch play, performed at 7:30 p.m. nightly October 5-8 in Florence Busby Corriher Theatre, spoofs the movies of that genre.  It also explores the mind of a teenage tomboy, Chicklet Forrest, who strives to be a part of the Malibu Beach surf crowd in 1962.  The things that hold Chicklet back are her unfortunate tendency towards split personalities and her dangerous alter ego, Ann Bowman, a sexually voracious vixen. 

Senior Robyn Smith of Chambersburg, Pa. directs the production.  She is assisted by junior Alysha Perez of Waldorf, Md., who serves as stage manager and provides publicity, sophomore Sarah Selman of Rome, Ga., who acts as assistant stage manager, and cast members who double as members of the stage crew. 

Cast members include freshman Nicole Bowles of Monroe as Marvel Ann; senior Nick Ditter of New Berlin, Wis. as Star Cat; freshman Katie Ritter of Robbins as Dee Dee; freshman Jordan Hunt of Hartford, Wis. as Kanaka; sophomore Justin Johnson of Fuquay-Varina as Chicklet Forrest; sophomore Betsy Foster of Baltimore, Md. as Berdine; sophomore Jeremy Kinser of Matthews as Mrs. Forrest; junior Catori Swann of Hickory as Nicky; junior Taylor Edwards of Hickory as Provoloney; freshman Kelly Barry of Strawberry Plains, Tenn. as Bettina Barnes; and sophomore Robbie Farlow of High Point as Yo-Yo.
