Buildings crumble, borders shrink and planets collide – all unmistakable signs that the King is dying and his kingdom is dying with him. This classic play of Absurdist theatre, “Exit the King,” will be presented by the Catawba College Theatre Department at 7:30 p.m. March 30- April 2 at the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on campus.
Written by Eugene Ionesco, one of the greatest and most optimistic of the Absurdist playwrights, “Exit the King” is a beautiful exploration of death, and more importantly, of life. The King in this production has a long life of joy and merriment behind him and very little future before him. Although he has spent his time living only in the moment, the King now faces an end for which he is not prepared, and those few people still around him offer him contradictory advice on how he can ready himself for the fast approaching end.
Cast members who also double as members of the production crew doing work on the set, lighting, and costumes include Nick Foltz of Ft. Thomas, Ky. As King Berenger the First; Brian Romans of Baltimore, Md. as the doctor; Sarah E. Koerner of Rocky Mount, N.C. as Juliette; Tiffany Cox of Woodbridge, Va. as the Queen; Lisa Ponce of Tolland, Conn. as Queen Marguerite; and Andy McCain of Mequon, Wis. as the guard. Other production crew members include Liam Macik of Pittsburgh, Pa. as the director; Alysha Perez of Waldorf, Md. as stage manager; and Nick Luisi of Pittsgrove, N.J. as assistant stage manager.
