Catawba College students met and spoke to representatives from local, state and national campaigns during Campaign 2008 Day held Tuesday, September 30 in the Cannon Student Center. Representatives from the Rowan County Board of Elections, on hand to register members of the Catawba College community to vote, reported that 22 individuals registered – 14 from Rowan County and 8 from outside of Rowan County.
Catawba College Dean of Students W. Dan Sullivan who called the event "an opportunity for students to be part of the process" reported that many students took the time to stop by and chat with officials from different campaigns. Some students posed to have their pictures taken with life-sized cutouts of Republican Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, Senator John McCain and Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin. Many others sported "Every Vote Counts" stickers on their clothing as they departed the Cannon Student Center, clutching postcard, pencils and campaign buttons given out by various campaigns.
On Thursday, October 16, Catawba College students will again come to the Cannon Student Center to cast 'mock ballots' for the presidential candidate of their choice in a Mock Presidential Election. The results of this mock voting will provide a microscopic glance at the preference these pivotal 18-25 year old voters have for each candidate.
