Jon Rhodes, a Catawba College junior from Virginia Beach, Va., was selected from the monthly winners of the institution's Paul Fisher Service Award to receive the annual Paul Fisher Service Award. That annual award carries a $250 scholarship provided by F & M Bank of Salisbury and named in honor of the bank's Chairman of the Board Paul Fisher who exemplifies in his own life the spirit of service.

Rhodes served as one of the three student coordinators for the Volunteer Catawba program during the 2006-2007 academic year. He placed special emphasis on organizing one-time service opportunities for his fellow students who desired to serve but could not make a commitment on an ongoing basis.

He also has served as the student coordinator for Catawba's Lilly Center Coffeehouse. Under his leadership, the coffeehouse expanded its offering of specialEvents to include art shows and talent revues as well as providing a place for students to congregate and visit with one another, or find a quiet place for studying or a game of chess.

Rhodes was the driving force behind the Autumn Ball, an event where students served as escorts for residents of Trinity Oaks Assisted Living for a dance and social at Halloween. He was also a major figure in the campus' weeklong emphasis on hunger and homelessness which drew attention to these needs in society. He helped with the semi-annual "Clean Plate Project" in conjunction with the college's food service provider as way of calling attention to the importance of not wasting food and helping those who are hungry.

In addition to providing leadership in volunteerism, Rhodes also has served as vice-president of the Dead Athenian Society, a male service organization on campus.
