One Catawba College alumnus and one Catawba College student are among the top three winners of an online audition for the Broadway musical, "Rent."   Alumnus Anthony Johnson of Osaka, Japan, a 2005 graduate with a degree in musical theatre, and musical theatre major senior Candace Neal of Waxhaw, will receive round-trip transportation to New York City, an official "Rent" audition with Bernard Telsey Casting, free hotel accommodations and two free tickets to see "Rent" on Broadway.

One hundred and forty-two individuals submitted online auditions videos which are viewable online at the  "Rent" website.  The contest concluded September 30.

Other Catawba College students who participated and their rankings in the "Rent" online competition include seniors Brianna Smith (25th) of Austin, Texas, Daniel Hines (36th) of Yorktown, Va., Jessica Taige (46th) of Wauwatosa, Wis., and Sheldon Rogers (57th) of Waxhaw.

Four of these contestants have roles in Catawba's upcoming production  of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" (Nov. 14-17 in Keppel Auditorium), including Daniel Hines as Frederick, Jessica Taige as Mabel, Brianna Smith as Ruth, and Sheldon Rogers as a Pirate. Candace Neal will perform in the Department's production of "The Exonerated" when it travels to Asheville on Saturday, October 13 for a 5 p.m. performance in the Asheville Arts Center.
