When Dr. Jim Epperson retired as a theater arts professor at Catawba College, he soon got another job — sportsman.

Epperson, 70, avidly participates in the Salisbury/Rowan Senior Games and competes nationally against athletes from all over the country.

"My wife said exercise is my work, but she's just glad to get me out of the house," Epperson joked.

Between the practices and competitions, many athletes are busy most days of the year.

He taught drama for years at Catawba and continues to act and direct local productions. He's written and will direct a play in February at the Lee Street Theatre.

Epperson has always been active, playing basketball here and there, but he never had as much time to devote to the sport as he really wanted. He'd played in high school and with a church league. Epperson also regularly jogged.

When Epperson retired, he wanted to do more.
