Jon Edwards of Jacksonville was elected as Governor of the American Legion Tar Heel Boys' State Wednesday, June 23 during the week-long event held at Catawba College. Jon is a rising senior at Jacksonville High School. He is the son of John and Barbara Edwards of Jacksonville, N.C.

Jon was inspired to run for Governor after overwhelming support from his Boys' State city (Bickett) and the Federalist Party. Before he became the gubernatorial nominee for the federalists, he was a nominee for county sheriff.

The American Legion sponsors a week-long program which mimics the realities of National, State, and local government. Delegates, known as citizens, run for offices across a statewide slate of candidates. The highest office, Governor, represents the interests and ideas of the citizens of the state.

This is the eighth consecutive year that the event has been held on Catawba's campus and approximately 300 participants, all rising high school seniors from North Carolina, are involved.
