Wind Ensemble Concert Series
2026-2027
The Persistence of Hope
A commonality across human existence can perhaps be found in the unifying beliefs that the world around us can improve, our experience is defined by our ability to change rather than our circumstances, and that with these beliefs everything is possible. It is the obstinance in the face of our circumstances, which dares us to continue advancing, to fight back, or dig deep, or wish for a better world. All these feelings could be characterized as “hope” and our willingness to do so, to hope, is a unifier which can transcend human history. This feeling endures through changing circumstances, across generations, and within each of us, progressing generationally to our present, and in search of our communal future. Sometimes this hope is found in remembering the past, or our origins. Sometimes it is circulated among us, person to person, or cause to cause through encouragement, or the knowledge we exist together. It is sustained by imagination, allowing us to envision a better future that sometimes moves us to act, spreading outward until it transforms lives and communities. Hope… and its persistence, allows us to move forward.
During the 2026–2027 Concert Series entitled The Persistence of Hope, the Catawba College Wind Ensemble aims to explore these enduring expressions of hope through music reflective of memory, inspiration, imagination, and transformation. Each concert creates a space to reflect on how hope persists, not necessarily as all things fall into place according to our plan, but because of the enduring human experience to find a path forward despite the obstacles before us. The four concerts in this series invite audiences to encounter hope from different perspectives, as the emotion quietly persists through those we meet, stories past to us, dreams we dare to dream, and decisions made in the process.
Searching for Nostalgia
September 18, 2026
Have you ever found yourself looking back to when things were simpler, kinder, or more gentle? Maybe it is a memory of youth when life was exciting, or thoughts of when things began and were fresh. The pull of the past, with all its bitter moments turned to sweetness, can create a haze of emotion, blocking out the negative memories and leaving only the good.
Nostalgia is funny that way.
This longing for memories, changed blissfully into their best version, can haunt us in the best way. It is a reminder that what feels difficult can shift in memory over time, until we find ourselves looking back with a different understanding of those moments. This feeling of nostalgia is a reminder the past can continue to live with us. This opening concert of the 2026–2027 Catawba College Wind Ensemble season explores these ideas through music, beginning a conversation about The Persistence of Hope.
The concert opens with Hirokazu Fukushima's wind octet, Fantasy Pastorale, as a moment of quiet reflection, setting the stage for all that comes next through the painting of peaceful landscapes and vibrant dance rhythms which feel both old and new. Kevin Day's Stride builds the framework of the concert with its layers of rhythms forming the foundation for melodies steeped in anticipation and energy. Chris Pilsner's Dum Spiro Spero, which is translated as "While I Breathe, I Hope," continues the concert and becomes the emotional center of the program by reminding us hope often endures through perseverance. Written in the style of Renaissance dances from across Europe, Ron Nelson's Courtly Airs and Dances connects the past and present, while James Naigus' Harvest Light provides a gentle moment of thoughtful reflection through the voice of the solo horn. The concert concludes with Yasuhide Ito's Festal Scenes as an expression of folk music through a modern lens, reminding us that memory is not stagnant, but something we continue to build upon.
Combined, these works focus on memory, the feeling of nostalgia, and the knowledge that today will quickly pass. The past is never really gone, especially when we know it shapes where we are going, together.
