Through the literature of great writers such as John Donne, Jane Austen, Henry James, and Toni Morrison, you’ll connect to your inner self by exploring the arts of poetry and narrative. Connect with your fellow students as well through dynamic conversations about things that really matter: the topics of great literature.
In small classes where the emphasis of learning is on intellectual curiosity, you and other Literature majors will grow knowledge, confidence, and mastery of the English language by studying the most notable writers and works in the British and American literary traditions. Inspiring faculty who love literature as much as you and your fellow students will lead thought-provoking, exploratory discussions into some of the most interesting literary topics.
Studying literature helps cultivate strong skills in writing, perceptive reading, an awareness of the motivations of individuals, the influence of culture, and the complications of language. In short, your pursuit of a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in Literature can lay the foundation for a variety of satisfying careers. Literature majors pursue careers in everything from business to teaching to publishing-related fields and are well prepared for graduate or professional study in fields such as literature, professional and creative writing, law, and academics.

Undergraduate Research
Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Catawba are encouraged to pursue extended research projects which allow them to delve deep into a topic of their personal interest. Students can present their research on campus at a well-attended annual Catawba Research and Creativity Showcase or at state and regional professional conferences such as the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Research Symposium.

2023 Catawba College Awards Ceremony Honors Students, Faculty, and Staff for Achievement and Service
Catawba College held its annual Awards Convocation on Thursday, April 20 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. Dr. Constance Rogers-Lowery, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, thanked all of the award recipients who have demonstrated the qualities upon which Catawba College was founded: scholarship, character, culture, and service.
Students from two Catawba College Honors Program participated in a two-night trip to Highlands, NC to learn from one another outside of the classroom.
Catawba College is bringing Jacques Belliveau to campus on Wednesday, November 16 and Thursday, November 17 as part of The Pursuit program. Jacques Belliveau is the writer, director, and producer of Reggie: A Millennial Depression Comedy.
