Catawba College’s The Wizard of Oz Brings Campus, Alumni, and Community Together in Keppel Auditorium

This spring, Catawba College’s production of The Wizard of Oz is more than a beloved musical. It is a celebration of community, connection, and a return to one of the college’s most cherished performance spaces, Keppel Auditorium.

Bringing together Catawba students, alumni, community members and young performers from area schools, the production reflects the college’s enduring commitment to community, collaboration and regional impact.

What began as an open audition process in November 2025 evolved into a deeply collaborative production that widens the circle of participation and makes the journey to Oz a shared experience. Community members Denise McKercher, who plays Aunt Em, and Todd Bassinger, who plays both Professor Marvel and the Wizard, join Catawba students onstage alongside alumni Garret Jennings and John Rapp. Their involvement adds depth to a production already shaped by talent, tradition, and a meaningful sense of homecoming.

The production also features young performers from Salisbury Academy, North Hills Christian School, Overton Elementary School, and Mount Ulla Elementary School as the Munchkins, helping create an energetic and memorable opening to Dorothy’s journey. For many of these students, performing in Keppel Auditorium is an exciting opportunity to build confidence and experience the expectations of a larger stage. Catawba faculty, staff, and students have worked directly with the youth ensemble throughout the rehearsal process, reinforcing the college’s commitment to collaboration, mentorship, and arts engagement across the community.

This year’s youth ensemble includes Mia Cook, Heidi Cross, Brooks Goodman, Parker Hoffner, AJ Holbrook, Lincoln Holman, Zoe Holmes, Ja’Lyn Howard, Larkyn McNeely, Madison Miller, John Michael Muth, Jack Muth, Noah Partridge, Courtney Scott, Micah Stevenson, Ruby Thompson, Audrey Townsend, Josie Vess, Charlotte Williams, Ella Williams, and Madelyn Yoder.

“This project has been a wonderful way to feel more connected to the community,” said Kristin Kavanagh, choreographer for the production. “The students bring so much energy and enthusiasm. It’s been really rewarding to watch their confidence grow.”

That spirit of connection extends beyond the stage. Alumni returning to Keppel for this production help bridge generations of Catawba theatre, while local performers and schoolchildren bring fresh energy and new perspectives. Together, they create a production that reflects the enduring relationship between Catawba College and the Salisbury-Rowan community.

Adding another special element to the show is Angus, the dog playing Toto. His appearance brings warmth and heart to the production while also connecting to a broader story of care, compassion, and community support. Angus was rescued by his owner, Laura Thompson, and trained by Salisbury native Tracy Crotts, whose professional expertise helped prepare him for the unique demands of the stage. Crotts is a Salisbury native and former Catawba College music major before earning her dog certification training.

His role also serves as a quiet reminder of the legacy of Dr. Cheryl Peevy, a beloved Catawba professor remembered for her compassion, her work with therapy dogs, and her support of local animal welfare efforts. Through Angus, the production reflects not only the magic of the story but also the values of care and connection that run deeply through the Catawba community.

With its blend of student talent, returning alumni, community performers, young local actors, and one unforgettable Toto, Catawba College’s The Wizard of Oz promises to be a joyful theatrical experience that highlights the power of the arts to bring people together.

Performances of The Wizard of Oz will be held in Keppel Auditorium on April 10-12. Tickets may be purchased online at catawba.edu/theatretix or at the door. Ticket prices are $16 for adults, $11 for non-Catawba students and $6 for Catawba students, faculty and staff.
