Catawba College Alumnus Names to the Explorers Club 50

Catawba College is proud to announce that Alberto Borges ’21, is among this year’s honorees of The Explorers Club 50 (EC50) Each year, The Explorers Club recognizes 50 individuals worldwide, whom they describe as “fifty people changing the world, the world needs to know about”. Persons named to this select group are those “who are doing remarkable work to promote science and exploration but remain under the radar and out of the limelight.”

Alberto is being honored for his work as an environmentalist and conservation educator in his native land of Kenya. He founded the Wilderness Conservation Centre to advance climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation, achieving a dream he had as a student. He currently serves as Conservation Programmes Manager at Space for Giants.

He has a lifelong passion for exploration and science and seeks to share that passion with others. At age 17, during an exploration of lava fields in Marsabit, Kenya, he discovered a new species of camel spider, which led to his receiving an award from The National Geographic Society and to his first TED talk.

He graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Environmental Science and Sustainability from Catawba College in 2021. A Gates Scholar, he earned an MPhil degree from the University of Cambridge, England. At Catawba, Alberto received the Whitener Medal, the College’s highest student honor.
