$5 Million Scholarship Gift Expands Access for Catawba College's Presidential Scholars

In mid-August, Catawba College received an anonymous $5 million gift to fund immediate-use, Presidential Scholars, the highest tier of academic scholarships. These funds strengthen Catawba’s ability to recruit and support high-achieving students, ensuring that financial barriers do not limit academic opportunities.

The scholarships will be awarded in the near term and provide meaningful aid to multiple incoming classes of students. Unlike endowed funds that generate support over time, this investment is structured to make an immediate impact and is renewable.

“This gift reinforces our mission and allows us to recruit more of the kinds of students who embrace Catawba’s Ideal—Scholarship with Character and Culture for Service,” said Catawba College President Dr. David P. Nelson.

The gift came as Stacy Gato began her tenure as Vice President for Enrollment Management. With more than two decades of experience in recruitment, retention, and financial aid strategy, she sees the gift as a timely and transformative investment.

“This commitment allows us to increase scholarships for academically strong students and to ensure that cost does not stand in the way of a Catawba education,” Gato said. “It strengthens our ability to enroll talented students and support their success from the day they arrive on campus.”

The scholarships reflect Catawba’s confidence that Good Goes Far by investing in students whose impact will extend outward into their communities and careers.

With this gift, more Presidential Scholars will join Catawba’s learning community in the coming years—building Catawba’s tradition of academic excellence.
