Back-to-Back $1 Million Gifts Fuel Catawba College's Newman Park Renovations

Published:
For nearly a century, Catawba College’s Newman Park has been more than bleachers and a diamond. It has held the echo of summer nights, American Legion rivalries, and decades of Catawba blue and white. Now, with two anonymous $1 million gifts made just weeks apart, the beloved ballpark is preparing for its next chapter—one that honors its history while opening new possibilities for today’s student-athletes.

For Head Baseball Coach Jim Gantt ’89, Newman Park represents both memory and possibility.

“Baseball is about more than wins and losses—it’s about family, history, and community,” Gantt said. “These gifts ensure Newman Park will continue to be a place where our players grow, our fans gather, and memories are made. I’m grateful to everyone who believes in this program and what it represents.”

Phase II of the renovations will focus on a rebuilt grandstand, modern restrooms, and a new press box—important upgrades that will enhance the experience for fans and players alike. Thanks to these recent gifts, Catawba has secured the resources needed to officially begin Phase II, while fundraising continues for future enhancements that will complete the vision for Newman Park. These improvements build on Phase I, completed in 2021, which delivered new turf, dugouts, bullpens, and lighting.

For Vice President for Athletics Michelle Caddigan, who has led Catawba Athletics to record-breaking performance in the Learfield Cup and sustained academic excellence across all teams, the timing of the gifts speaks volumes.

“To receive not one but two $1 million gifts just three weeks apart shows how deeply people care about Catawba and about Newman Park,” Caddigan said. “Our student-athletes are competing, excelling, and leading at the highest levels—on the field and in the classroom. This project will elevate their experience and ensure Newman Park is worthy of their talent and commitment.”

With student-athletes breaking records and alumni rallying around them, the Campaign for Newman Park is gaining momentum. Supporters are invited to join in making this vision a reality. Contributions of all sizes help fuel the project and honor the generations who have played and cheered at the Park.

Newman Park’s story has always been one of traditions. Its future, thanks to bold generosity, will be a story of possibility.
