Dr. Michelle Rose is a music educator, author, researcher, and performer. She is Assistant Professor of Music Education and Music Theory at Catawba College.
Prior to her current position at Catawba College, Dr. Rose taught at Carolina University, Central Carolina Community College, and Forsyth Technical Community College. She also has experience teaching elementary & secondary general music, high school band, music production, and middle and & school choir. Dr. Rose is a pioneer in teaching music online at the K-12 level. She established and built a middle and high school music program at a state-wide virtual school in 2017 and later went on to establish and build another 6-12 music program at a district-based virtual school. She also founded virtual instrumental and vocal ensembles, through which she created innovative methods for rehearsing ensembles online. Her expertise in online instruction later supported music educators worldwide as they adapted to emergency school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to her experience with teaching, she has developed numerous music education resources and curricula, including the NC Virtual Public School Digital Music Production course for high school students and the second edition of Rainbow Ukulele. Dr. Rose is also a sought after clinician, presenter, and panelist, with previous sessions for the North Carolina Music Educators Association, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, MakeMusic(formerly SmartMusic), Noteflight, Quebec Bandmasters Association, and districts across the country.
Dr. Rose’s research interests include online music education, community music, teacher preparation, and quantitative research methodology. Her research is published in Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education. She is the author of the best-selling book from F-Flat Books Teaching Music Online: A Comprehensive Guide for K-12 Music Educators, which she wrote to help teachers transition into online music education.
Dr. Rose holds a B.S. in Music Education and a B.A. in Music Performance from Elon University and a M.M. in Music Education and Ph.D. in Music Education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In her free time, she enjoys baking, sewing, woodworking/carpentry, and going on walks with her dog Tovy (short for Beethoven).
