A staged reading of an original play, "Conjoined," written by Catawba College Writer-in-Residence and Professor of English Dr. Janice M. Fuller, is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday, September 23 at the ArtCenter in Carrboro. Catawba College Theatre Arts Professor Emeritus Dr. Jim Epperson will direct five Catawba students at the reading.

In "Conjoined," a poetic play with movement, a set of female conjoined twins with conflicting temperaments struggle to negotiate day-to-day conflicts over teenaged issues like cheerleading and tattoos. In the interludes between these scenes of black humor, a scientist discusses their "case" and a pair of dancers enacts dreams about how the twins might be separated and images of the independent lives they might live.

"Conjoined" is one of four plays selected by the N.C. Playwrights Alliance for a staged reading at its annual reading series. Catawba students participating include Landon Beaty of Ft. Payne, Ala., Laura Klayman of Cloudcroft, N.M., Nicole Durant of Fairview, Jesse Hunter of Bridgewater, Va., and Alyson Martorana of Glassboro, N.J.

"Conjoined" started as a monologue that fuller wrote during a workshop with Paula Vogel in St. Petersburg, Russia in the summer of 2001. The full-length play was given a staged reading at Catawba’s Florence Busby Theatre in November 2002 with local actors Tammie Casper, Darryl Casper, Debbie Hubbard, and Claudia Gallup reading, and Maureen Shay directing.
