About Catawba College
Founded in 1851 and perennially ranked as one of the best colleges in the South, Catawba College provides an education focused on an institutional philosophy of a liberal education, which entails a broad range of knowledge, intellectual and practical skills, and individual and social responsibility fostered and developed in all academic programs. Catawba is a learning community that provides students unique opportunities to explore vocation, helping students to consider their calling, their passions, and their purpose as they prepare to reach their highest potential.
Catawba College’s scenic campus is located within the historic piedmont city of Salisbury, North Carolina, (pop. 34,000), part of the greater Charlotte area. Spread out over 276 wooded acres and 41 buildings, the campus is a beautiful blend of neogothic architecture set on a shaded hillside adjacent to the Center for the Environment facility and the ecological preserve. Centrally located, it is only two hours away from the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina and four hours away from some of the best beaches on the Atlantic Coast. Salisbury is a 45-minute drive from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States (10th nationwide in passenger traffic in 2022) with links to numerous domestic and overseas destinations.
Catawba offers 70 academic majors to 1,300 students hailing from 34 U.S. states and 19 foreign countries. Like the student body, the Catawba faculty, constituting nearly 90 full-time members, is broadly diverse. It embodies a significant range of opinion and philosophy, founded in study at many of the nation's leading colleges and universities. Thirty-six percent of students identify as first-generation students, 45 percent of students are Pell-eligible, and 45 percent of first-year students identify as non-white (21 percent African American, 11 percent Hispanic). All Catawba students receive financial aid, and a significant proportion of financial need is met by the College for most students. The first-year retention rate for full-time undergraduates is 73 percent. Within six months of graduation, 97 percent of Catawba alumni are employed professionally or enrolled in graduate school.
Catawba College enjoys a strong financial picture. The College's endowment of $320 million supports the College's educational and service activities. The remarkable $200 million gift the College received in late 2021 transformed Catawba's future. One-third of the gift is earmarked to provide recurring funding to support and enhance Catawba's well-established programs in environment and sustainability. Two-thirds of the gift is dedicated to supporting strategic initiatives, strengthening student scholarships, enhancing student success programming, promoting a thriving workplace, and investing in faculty excellence. Catawba has also received gifts in recent years to retire the entirety of the college’s debt, and in 2022, the College received an additional endowment gift of $42 million.
Finally, the teaching and research of faculty across disciplines have clear links to Catawba College’s identity around sustainability. In April 2023, the College became the 13th campus in the United States to achieve carbon neutrality and the 1st in North Carolina. Catawba College is committed to contributing to a more sustainable world through its programs and people.

LOCATION AND HISTORY
Catawba College is located in Salisbury, North Carolina, a historic Southern city situated between the greater Charlotte area and the triad area of Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem. In Salisbury, community members find both a quiet countryside filled with wineries and pick-your-own farms and a bustling downtown district with breweries, historic trolleys, a thriving arts scene, and more. Salisbury is home to the Lee Street Theatre, the Meroney Theater, the Norvell Theater, and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra. Situated in the Piedmont region of beautiful North Carolina, residents enjoy four mild seasons and plenty of opportunities to explore the area's natural treasures.
Catawba College was established in 1851 in the town of Newton, a center of commerce in the foothills of western North Carolina. The region was settled in the 1740s by German pioneers who had traveled from eastern Pennsylvania to inhabit the valleys of the Haw, Yadkin, and Catawba rivers. The high value these pioneers placed on education was visible during 1848 meeting of the German Reformed Classis at St. Matthew's Arbor, where it was suggested that the Education Society "found a college of our own in our own midst." Catawba bears the name of the native American tribe associated with the county of the college’s founding and the river flowing nearby. Following a hiatus during the Civil War, Catawba resumed operations under its original charter and awarded its first college degrees in 1889. Catawba moved from Newton, North Carolina, to its current location in Salisbury in 1925.
Catawba seeks to serve the Salisbury-Rowan County community through its programs and services. The Robertson College-Community Center, a facility built as a joint venture with the community over 37 years ago, houses the Shuford School of Performing Arts and showcases musical and theatre productions from the College and the community. Similarly, the College's athletic facilities have been enhanced by the local community and are available to local residents as well as students. Students have many opportunities to be an active part of a larger community while they are enrolled at Catawba and find opportunities for community interaction, service, and personal development.
ACADEMICS AND FACULTY
The 11:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 12 students foster student learning and growth, as does the enduring commitment of caring and engaged faculty who challenge and support students throughout their educational journey.
Catawba College houses five schools that are home to more than 70 different fields of study. The five schools include the School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Health Science and Human Performance, and the School of Performing Arts. Additionally, Catawba Online provides a select array of learning opportunities for non-traditional students. THE CENTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
The Catawba College Center for the Environment is a key component in our quest to become the leading environmental small college in the Southeast and a national center of distinction. Since its founding in 1996, the Center has led a living-learning laboratory for campus sustainability that provides hands-on environmental learning opportunities for Catawba’s students while helping them learn how to advocate for and lead positive environmental change. The Center also serves as a research, convening, and policy development hub for issues ranging from regional air and water quality to state and national environmental and energy policies.
The Center is housed in a stunning structure that emerges from a sloping stand of hardwood trees at the edge of the College's 189-acre ecological preserve. Every aspect of the building embodies leading sustainability principles, which creates one of the most sought-after spaces for environmental gatherings in North Carolina. Over the years, the Center has hosted leading environmental speakers such as Erin Brockovich and Rocky Mountain Institute co-founder Amory Lovins, and events like the National Environmental Youth Summit and NC Breathe.
In the fall of 2022, the Center for the Environment began a new chapter under its second director, Brad Ives. Exciting recent accomplishments include becoming the first college in the Southeast and the thirteenth nationally to be certified as carbon neutral by Second Nature, launching the NC Clean Future Project in a partnership with Wake Forest University and obtaining the College’s initial AASHE STARS rating of Silver. The Center aspires to be nationally recognized in the fields of environmental stewardship and energy and environmental policy.
LILLY CENTER FOR VOCATION AND VALUES
Catawba College believes in a transforming education that provides students with an understanding of vocation in its traditional meaning of “calling.” In 2003, Catawba College became one of 39 colleges and universities nationwide to receive a major grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. With funds from that grant, Catawba College founded the Lilly Center for Vocation and Values, directed by Catawba’s Chaplain, Kendra Joyner-Miller ‘11.
The work of Lilly Center is grounded in our belief that vocational discernment should be an explicit part of every student’s formation. The Center empowers students to meet the ever-adapting world, centering on who they are, what they value, and how that can be lived out. Through the Lilly Center students explore how, in the words of Frederick Buechner, their deep passions meet the world’s deep needs. The Lilly Center offers opportunities for students all students to explore how a variety of occupations can be vocations, and also aids those students who may pursue a vocation in ministry.
The Center also leads our Discover summer camps, providing theological formation for middle and high school youth, as well as our Catawba Clergy Network, which promotes vocational thriving for over one hundred clergy members each year.
