Catawba College alumnus Dennis Reed '06 was named by the City of Charlotte as the recipient of the "Community Leader of the Year" award.

A crowd of hundreds gathered in Halton Theater at Central Piedmont Community College on January 10, 2015 to celebrate the achievements and nominations of local artist and business owners in Charlotte, N.C.

Reed was greeted by a rousing standing ovation and cheers from students of Inspire the Fire (Reed's non-profit organization that serves at-risk teens through the arts).

This award followed shortly after Reed was honored by BMI's Vice President of Songwriter Relations Catherine Brewton at the Hope for Harvest Foundation. Brewton awarded Reed with the "Rodney Jerkins Community Service Award" for his outstanding contributions to the community and passion for good. Several artists including Rapper Young Joc, BMI staff, award-winning singer Vashawn Mitchell, new artist Mali Music, and others were in attendance for the Jerkins award presentation.

In addition, Reed has also been nominated for the NAACP Hometown Hero Award and, if voted by the city, has a chance to attend the nationally-televised Image Awards. Online voting is now open, and voters can vote once daily.

Congratulations and good luck, Dennis!
