A LOVE LETTER TO NEWMAN PARK

Step into Newman Park and you step into a story. Not just of a college or a field — but of a nation’s pastime and a city’s heart.

From the classic green of the outfield walls to the red clay echoes of footsteps past, Newman Park has been the canvas for innings of joy, heartbreak, triumph, and timeless tradition since 1926.

Nestled into the east side of campus, adjacent to the neighborhood that’s cheered for generations, the park whispers tales of summers gone by. Here, the crack of the bat carries more than a game — it carries memory.

Not just a memory for Catawba College, but a long history of lower-level major league baseball, including the Salisbury Braves, where in 1961, outfielder Aaron Pointer batted over .400, the last player to do so at any level of Major League Baseball. All while hosting a highly successful American Legion baseball team for decades.

And yet, look closer. Beneath the nostalgia is a modern marvel. A pristine synthetic turf field (the same used by the Texas Rangers). Major league dugouts. A custom scoreboard standing tall in left center. All hallmarks of Phase 1 of revitalizing Newman Park, completed in 2021 — a future built on tradition.

But the work isn’t finished. The missing grandstand, once the park’s soul, is coming next. It will house the fans who cheer on Catawba College Baseball, American Legion Ball, and, perhaps, a Summer Collegiate League. And we need your help to bring it home.
