FACES of GOOD

MIKE CASEY '78
- Catawba College Alumnus
- Board of Visitors Member
- Mentor & Advocate
“If people invest in you, you have an obligation to invest in others.”
From the football field to the boardroom, Mike Casey’s journey has been shaped by the personal investment others made in him — beginning at Catawba College. A business administration and speech communications graduate, Casey credits Catawba’s close-knit environment, empathetic culture, and deeply engaged faculty with transforming his outlook on education, accountability, and leadership.
After graduating in 1978, Casey built a distinguished 40-year career with JM Family Enterprises, eventually leading a national field sales and service organization supporting thousands of accounts and hundreds of employees. Today, he channels that experience into mentoring, public speaking, and giving back to the communities and institutions that shaped him most.
YEARS
at one company, growing from entry-level hire to leading a national organization of 400 people, because the right people chose to invest in him early.
PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY
The lesson Mike learned at Catawba that he carried into every role, every team, and every mentorship conversation for the next five decades.
EMPATHY IN ACTION
The quality Mike says Catawba instills better than any school he knows, and the reason he keeps coming back to give it forward.
Personal Investment
Casey's path to Catawba began not through a brochure or a campus visit, but through a genuine human connection. Hank Armstrong, a Catawba alumnus and opposing coach who saw something worth nurturing in a young Mike Casey, extended a personal invitation that would change the course of his life. Once on campus, faculty like Dr. Karl Hales continued that tradition — offering one-on-one guidance, academic mentorship, and the kind of invested attention that Casey had never experienced in a classroom before. Those relationships taught him something he would carry into every role he'd ever hold: that personal accountability, not blame or deflection, is where real growth begins. It's a lesson he continues to pass forward today through mentoring, advising, and leadership service to the next generation.
Lifelong Leadership
For Casey, Catawba's culture of empathy doesn't end at graduation — it compounds over time. He has served on Catawba's Board of Visitors, supports the Chiefs Club and athletics initiatives, and regularly hosts alumni engagement events to keep the community strong and growing. He's also become one of the College's most passionate advocates, encouraging alumni to give back not just financially, but through mentorship, service, and helping identify the next great Catawba student. In his view, every person who walks through those doors represents an opportunity — and every alumnus who stays connected multiplies that impact. It's why he so readily champions Catawba as one of North Carolina's best-kept secrets, a school whose reputation, he believes, should be far wider than its enrollment.
Student-Athlete Experience
Casey arrived at Catawba to play football, but what he found was something bigger than the sport. Unlike the increasingly professionalized landscape of Division I athletics, Catawba held firm to a simple but powerful idea: that athletes are students first. Casey experienced that balance himself and has watched it continue under coaches like Tyler Haines, who helped raise the football program's team GPA from 2.1 to a 3.0 average across 120 players. The swim and tennis teams rank among the highest GPAs in the country. To Casey, that's not a coincidence — it's the direct result of an environment where small class sizes, attentive faculty, and a culture of accountability give every student-athlete a genuine shot at both. And beyond the academics and athletics, it's the friendships formed in that close-knit setting that Casey counts among Catawba's most enduring gifts.
Accountability, Empathy, and Example
At the core of everything Casey does is a philosophy built on four interconnected beliefs: that personal accountability is the foundation of growth, that mentorship has the power to change lives in ways neither party may fully understand in the moment, that true leadership begins with empathy and example, and that the strongest communities are built not through transactions but through genuine human connection. These aren't abstract ideals for Casey — they're the throughline of his own story, from a high school student who didn't know where he was headed, to an executive leading hundreds of people, to a retiree who chose to spend his next chapter giving back.
Paying It Forward
Casey's commitment to the next generation is both personal and practical. Through speaking engagements, alumni leadership, and one-on-one mentorship, he works to help young professionals embrace accountability, build meaningful networks, and understand the value of the investment being made in them. He actively promotes opportunities for future Catawba students, helping the College compete for talented candidates in an increasingly crowded higher education landscape. More than anything, Casey hopes his own story serves as proof of what's possible when the right people choose to invest in you — and what becomes possible when you choose to do the same for others.
TOGETHER, WE CAN DO A WORLD OF GOOD.
The Where Our Good Goes campaign is a comprehensive campaign with the goal of securing Catawba College for generations to come.
