2008-2009
2008-2009 was the "Year of China" at Catawba College. Catawba's "Year of..." program highlighted a particular region of the globe and encouraged all campus entities, curricular and non-curricular, to feature that region in their programming whenever possible.
A faculty-staff coordinating committee selected China as the focus for the inaugural "Year of..." program for a number of reasons: Of course the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing brought unprecedented public attention to China. Beyond that, however, China is rapidly emerging as a major player on the world stage, both politically and economically. This most populous nation on the globe, with nearly one-fourth of the world's population, has shaken off decades of isolation. Chinese goods are now flooding the world's markets, just as the Chinese market is finally opening to non-Chinese products. Travel in China — once nearly impossible for foreigners — has become routine. In short, a wealth of historical and cultural information about this ancient nation is once again accessible to the world.

OUR GOAL
Catawba's "Year of…" program aims to increase awareness and understanding of foreign peoples and cultures, to promote the "internationalization" of the Catawba campus, and to help prepare students to succeed in the current era of globalization.
