Center for International Studies (Study Abroad)

About the Center

The Glenn & Addie Ketner for International Studies was started in June of 2004. The Center's mission is to encourage and assist Catawba students who wish to pursue part of their education in a foreign country, and to promote international and cross-cultural educational experiences on the Catawba campus.

At present there are four types of foreign study experiences available for Catawba students:

  1. Catawba at Harlaxton: This semester abroad program is conducted at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton.  Harlaxton College is owned and operated by the University of Evansville.  A number of partner colleges, of which Catawba College is one, participate in the operation of Harlaxton by providing visiting faculty members and by offering its programs to their students.  One of the nation's oldest and most highly regarded foreign study programs, Harlaxton College combines intensive study of British culture and history with a broad selection of elective courses and ample opportunity for additional travel within Britain and on the European continent.

  2. The Catawba Summer Language Program in Costa Rica:  This popular program allows students to complete six semester hours of Spanish (the equivalent of two semesters) during four weeks of intensive Spanish language study in May and June.  The program includes weekend sight-seeing excursions in the Costa Rican countryside. 3. Business in ChinaAd hoc travel excursions organized and led by faculty members, and associated with a Catawba course (usually, but not always, an Honors course):  These excursions typically last from a few days to several weeks.  They ordinarily take place during the summer or during one of the extended breaks in the academic year.  Recently, excursions have been organized for Britain, Ireland, France, Italy, the Middle East, Estonia, Japan, and China, among others.

  4. Independent Foreign Study: The Center for International Studies is also happy to help students find and arrange independent foreign study opportunities through other programs, not officially a part of Catawba's offerings. The Center will assist a student in finding an appropriate program almost anywhere in the world and in transferring academic credit back to Catawba.

The cost of these programs varies. All previously awarded financial aid does apply for the "Catawba at Harlaxton" semester, and need-based foreign study scholarships are available to assist with the Costa Rica program and with ad hoc excursions. The goal of the Center for International Studies is to provide foreign study opportunities to all Catawba students, regardless of financial need.

Please note that the Ketner Center for International Studies is still aggressively expanding the foreign study opportunities available at Catawba College. Check this site for updates
