First-Year Student Testimonials
(Lauren Flynn continued)
"Learning new study skills has also helped me be successful in college since I was used to a completely different way of teaching in high school. Being all freshman, the seminar gave me a group of people that were right there on my level. It also let me know that I was not alone and helped me to feel much more at home than I had expected.
The First-Year Seminar program is set up to help those new to the school get used to the difference found at Catawba College before setting them loose in it. It introduces new students to a group of freshman who are all going through the same things. It also introduces them to new study skills and teaching styles. The seminar program is a great way for every new student, freshman or transfer, to become acclimated to Catawba College.
The Alphas in my class were extremely helpful in answering my questions and getting me involved in activities on campus. If I didn't know where something was or how something worked on campus, I felt comfortable asking them. The seminar helped in letting me get comfortable with new teaching styles and study habits.
Because we were all freshman, we weren't afraid to ask each other questions because we were all in the same level. Many of us became close friends and we would get together throughout the year for different reasons, whether we were studying for another class or going out to eat. Many of us still are friends.
I would just like to add that because I had such a great experience my freshman year and my Alphas were so helpful, I decided to become an Alpha myself. This year, I assisted the incoming freshman and hopefully made as much a difference in their life as my alphas did in mine."
