D.J. Colson, a sophomore business major from New London, knows something about how to take an idea and make it reality. The new lamppost banners on campus are evidence of that. It all started with an idea D.J. had during fall semester — one he got after visiting several other colleges about Catawba's size. "I saw they had lamppost banners in place on their campus. I thought we should have some to help create more campus pride here at Catawba."

The Martha Kirkland West Scholars are students from both inside and outside of the state of North Carolina who have demonstrated leadership, community involvement and a strong commitment to teaching. A total of 286 students have been named to the Dean's List for the 2011 Fall semester at Catawba College, according to Dr. W. Richard Stephens, Jr., Provost of the College. Dr. Eric R. Hake, associate professor of economics at Catawba College, presented a paper at the Allied Social Science Association (ASSA)/American Economics Association Conference in Chicago, Ill., on Jan. 6, 2012. Seven students, accompanied by two Catawba College faculty, will present four pieces of research at the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association.

By Dr. Forrest Anderson, Assistant Professor of English - Laura van den Berg, author of the prizewinning short story collection "What the World Will Look Like When All the Water Leaves Us," will read at Catawba College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18. The event, slated in Tom Smith Auditorium, is free and open to the public.

Classes for the third year of Catawba's "J term," concluded on January 4, with 104 students seizing the opportunity to earn course credit online and/or to travel abroad over the break between semesters. While some courses included a travel component and took students to London, France, Nashville and even Nicaragua, other online courses netted them three credit hours in subject areas ranging from English to Psychology.

Environment & Energy, a publishing firm, recently noted that "colleges are ... beginning to see that environmental initiatives have impacts on how their peers, along with their current and past students, perceive them. A school's reputation may hinge as much on its green credibility as it does on conference titles and championships."

Catawba College alumnus Ben Prater '02 returned to campus in late November to help mark the 15th anniversary of the Center for the Environment and the 10th anniversary of the building that houses it, and to share some real-world advice about landing a job with current students.

The Catawba College community celebrated its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Service together on Monday, November 21 in the Cannon Student Center. The event was co-sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA) and the President's Office.
