It's always nice to have a few days off but I actually look forward to going to my internship every morning. The people are all so nice and laid back so it makes it fun to work there. I didn't have any work leftover from the previous week and my bosses were all pretty busy taking care of their overloaded e-mail accounts so I didn't do a whole lot of important Canadian Embassy stuff...

by Cyle Petersen '10 - I've now been in the nation's capital for exactly one week. It seems like I have experienced a year's worth of sightseeing, local culture, and the like already with very minimal rest time to even reflect on it. So here goes...

Catawba Student Riker Gold bungees off a platform while on an excursion in Costa Rica during the Language Immersion program in Summer, 2009. This program grants students six hours of Catawba College credit and includes four hours a day of class five days a week for four weeks. Excursions and cultural activities are also a program expectation. Coursework is available at all levels of study. Catawba College faculty and staff direct the program and travel with the group. In the Hot Zone: One Man, One Year, Twenty Wars, by Kevin Sites, has been chosen as the Common Summer Reading for 2009. The book details journalist Kevin Sites's travels through 20 distinct world conflicts from 2005-2006, during which time he was the war correspondent for Yahoo.com.

A total of 120 students have been named to the Presidential Honor Roll List for the 2008-2009 academic year at Catawba College, according to Dr. W. Richard Stephens, Jr., Provost of the College. by Seth Leonard, The Salisbury Post Salisbury will be the backdrop for a new independent film featuring local students and landmarks. Catawba College will play host to half of the feature, while the rest will be shot in Nashville, Tenn. The movie, "Sway," will be a full-length feature, scripted as a musical with dance and drama. The plot is centered around dance major Emma Mitchell, played by Sarah LeJeune, her struggles with life and the curveballs it can throw.

The Undergraduate Research Fellowship Award program was unveiled this year by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. It brings to 19 the number of grant and loan programs administered by the Center to support education, research, commercialization and company development.

Catawba College President Craig Turner both congratulated and issued a challenge to the graduating seniors in the class of 2009. His remarks came in the form of a charge to the Catawba's 263 graduates during a 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremony held Saturday, May 9th in Keppel Auditorium on campus.

Catawba College Alumnus Patrick L. McCrory '78, the current mayor of the City of Charlotte, and three graduating seniors, Jill Archambault of Glens Falls, N.Y.; Jared Kenish of Glassboro, N.J.; and Richard Kolbasowski, Jr., of Rockwell, N.C.; received special recognition during the College's May 9th Commencement Exercises.
