Dr. J. Michael Bitzer will serve as Catawba College's acting provost beginning June 1. President Brien Lewis made that announcement to the campus community on May 20. Bitzer, an associate professor politics and history and chair of the Department of History and Politics at Catawba, joined the faculty in 2002. He will fill a vacancy left by the departure of Dr. W. Richard "Rick" Stephens, Jr. who will lead the academic administration at Alfred University.

Dr. W. Richard "Rick" Stephens, Jr. will step down as provost of Catawba College at the end of this academic year. He has accepted a position as provost and academic vice president at Alfred University in Alfred, New York, and starts there July 1.

Catawba College's End-of-the-Year Luncheon for Faculty and Staff was a time to recognize 10 individuals who are retiring from the college this year.

Members of the Catawba College community gathered in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on April 23 to celebrate achievement. The occasion was the annual Awards Convocation.Scheduled the day after Earth Day, the awards distributed were eco-friendly, made of Catawba blue, 100% recycled glass. They symbolized the college's commitment to environmental responsibility and are a reminder to the recipients to promote a greener, more sustainable lifestyle.

A piano concert by Steven Heyman at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel will conclude the Catawba College Artist Series for spring semester. This concert is free and open to the public. Heyman is currently an Associate Professor and Co-Chair of the Keyboard Department at Syracuse University. In the central New York area, he has an active performing career including being the soloist with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra 27 times over a 35 year period.

Larry Farmer, Catawba College's Director of Human Resources, has been elected as Southern Region Director to the National Board of Directors for the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR). When Gordon A. Kirkland, Jr. '70 of Clemmons retired as director of athletic development at Catawba College in December, he did so quietly, likely hoping for little or no fanfare. Instead, he received a tribute in the form of a new Endowed Scholarship, established in his honor by his fellow alumni, members of the Catawba Chiefs Club members with whom he had worked, and friends.

Catawba College Alumnus and Trustee Gregory M. Alcorn '79 of Salisbury is one of three new members appointed by N.C. Governor Pat McCrory '78 to the State Board of Education. That announcement was made Wednesday, Jan. 30. McCrory told N.C. legislative leaders that he had chosen Bill Cobey of Durham, Greg Alcorn of Salisbury and Becky Taylor of Greenville to the state's policy-making board for the public schools. The General Assembly must vote to confirm the new governor's choices.

A free program of piano music by Patrick Behringer at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel continues the Catawba Artist Series for spring semester. Behringer will perform works of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Prokofiev. Behringer performs throughout the Fort Worth, Texas area and maintains a private piano studio there. He is a regular lecture recitalist in public schools as part of the Fort Worth Contemporary Music Fund's education program, "The Legacy of the Americas."

Catawba College Baseball Coach Jim Gantt was recently awarded the 2012 Walter Rabb Award, presented annually to the North Carolina Amateur Baseball Coach of the Year. This is the second time that he has been honored with this award; he also received it in 2002. Catawba College has announced that Curtis Walker, a former All-American player for the Indians, has accepted the position of head football coach. The announcement was made today by Brien Lewis, Catawba's president. Walker, defensive coordinator at Western Carolina University since last January, follows Chip Hester, who resigned on Nov. 16 after 11 seasons. Hester will remain at Catawba as Director of Athletic Development, replacing Gordon Kirkland who is retiring at the end of December.

The Catawba College community celebrated its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Service together on Monday, November 19 in the Cannon Student Center. The event was co-sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA) and the President's Office.

Catawba College announced today that Chip Hester has resigned his position as head football coach. Hester has accepted the position of Director of Athletic Development at Catawba, a position that will be vacated in December with the retirement of Gordon Kirkland, Jr. '70, who joined the college in 2000. Hester's new position is part of Catawba's Development Office and includes oversight of the Chiefs Club, the athletics' booster club.

Catawba College's 23rd President Brien Lewis conjured images of an exciting voyage into the future for the college at his inauguration ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 28. The ceremony marked an official beginning for the 45-year-old president, who joined the college in April.

At a barbecue luncheon that was part of the college's Homecoming Weekend activities, four individuals were honored as recipients of Catawba College's Distinguished Alumnus Award on Saturday, Oct. 27. The honorees include 1979 alumnus Michael S. Bauk of Salisbury; 1955 alumnus the Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Hamilton of Newton; 1971 alumnus Dr. Dolan Hubbard of Timonium, Md.; and 1951 alumnus Jack Ward of Mocksville.

Catawba College's Residence Life staff will be using plastic ducks for the ninth consecutive year to raise money to buy Thanksgiving turkey dinners for needy local families. Over the past eight years, more than 1,100 families have been provided with Thanksgiving meals, thanks to the annual Thanksgiving Duck Draw project. This year, the project's goal is to provide meals for an additional 150 families.

Catawba College will install its 23rd president, W. Brien D. Lewis, during a 3 p.m. ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 28 in Keppel Auditorium on campus. Volunteer Catawba is partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Rowan County and a local family to build a home by Christmas. A group of volunteers from Catawba College, including President Brien Lewis, participated in the 2012 Rowan County United Way Day of Caring on Thursday, September 13th. On this annual event, hundreds of volunteers from across Rowan County travel to various schools and other non-profit organizations to paint, carpet, landscape, and/or do whatever the organization needs.

Catawba College upped its institutional commitment to sustainability recently by agreeing to create a green revolving fund that will loan money to finance on-campus investments in clean energy and efficiency projects. The Catawba College Board of Trustees elected a new slate of officers at its May meeting. Darlene Landis Ball of Greensboro, a 1962 alumna of Catawba, was elected chair of the board, succeeding Paul Fisher of Salisbury. Ball had served on the board since 2001 and served as its vice chair since 2008.

A current and a retired Catawba College employee have been honored with new scholarships established in their honor. Joanna Jasper, Catawba's chief information officer, and David E. Setzer, who retired in 1997 as special assistant to the president after 36 years of service, were honored with the scholarships created by gifts from an anonymous donor.

The Center for the Environment at Catawba College received one of four 2012 N.C. Mobile Clean Air Renewable Energy (CARE) Awards from the N.C. Solar Center/N.C. "The most important thing this college did for me was let me become a student here," Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine recalled Sunday, April 15, as he accepted Catawba College's prestigious Adrian L. Shuford, Jr. Award for Distinguished Service. Oxendine, a 1952 alumnus of Catawba and chancellor emeritus of UNC Pembroke, was tapped to serve as interim president of his alma mater last March while a national search was launched for Catawba's next president.

Catawba College's new President Brien Lewis began his first day in the position April 16. His first day included meetings with campus constituencies and lunch with students in the dining hall. Catawba's Board of Trustees approved the selection of the former Vice President for University Development and Alumni Relations at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., in early March, following a recommendation by the College's Presidential Search Committee.

For the fourth consecutive year, Catawba College has been selected for the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This year, Catawba was among 110 colleges and universities nationwide named to the Honor Roll with distinction. This designation was awarded to the college for demonstrating a strong institutional commitment to service, developing campus-community partnerships resulting in measurable impact, and engaging students in meaningful service.

Food Lion Co-Founder Ralph Ketner, the keynote speaker at Catawba's ninth Distinguished CEO Lecture Series on March 1, likened himself to the turtle atop a fence post. "That turtle knows he didn't get there by himself – he had help. I'm only standing here today because of the help I have from the original investors in Food Town," the 91-year-old Ketner quipped.

Sustainable Catawba hosted a successful kickoff Tuesday, February 21st, in the Cannon Student Center on the Catawba College campus. During the event, 193 students, faculty, and staff (including College President Dr. Joseph Oxendine) pledged to make sustainable behaviors a habit in their daily routines.

Brien Lewis, currently Vice President for University Development and Alumni Relations at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., will become Catawba College's next President, effective in April. The College Board of Trustees approved Lewis' selection in early March, following a recommendation by the College's Presidential Search Committee.

On-campus collaboration between Catawba College student groups, organizations, and academic and operational departments is key to creating a new vision for Sustainable Catawba. An effort to seal this collaboration launches February 21 with a pledge.

Noting that only two higher education institutions in the Carolinas were selected to receive a prestigious Duke Energy 2011 Power Partner Award, Catawba College President Joseph B. Oxendine accepted Catawba's award during a Jan. 25 luncheon hosted by Duke Energy on campus. Oxendine explained that Catawba College and Clemson University were the only two higher education institutions tapped for the awards.

He has been called a visionary for transforming food retailing and has been named among "Tar Heels Who Made a Difference" in the 20th century. Ralph W. Please join us for a memorial service honoring the life of our friend Louise Tucker who passed away on December 18th. The service will take place on Sunday, January 22 at 2:00 p.m. in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. A 1944 graduate of Catawba College, she went to work for the College where she served as secretary to the registrar, associate registrar and assistant to the vice president for planning and academic services. She retired in 1986.

Environment & Energy, a publishing firm, recently noted that "colleges are ... beginning to see that environmental initiatives have impacts on how their peers, along with their current and past students, perceive them. National Native American Heritage Month was celebrated on Nov. 17 in the Hefner VA Medical Center Social Room. The theme was Service, Honor, Respect, Strengthening Our Cultures and Communities. Though it was only mid-November, the sounds of Christmas could be heard coming from the Cannon Student Center recently as volunteers scurried around, filling shoeboxes with Christmas gifts for children in impoverished and war torn countries. On November 15th, approximately 40 students and several staff members enthusiastically participated in the Operation Christmas Child Packing Party – a joint effort of Volunteer Catawba and the Student Affairs Office.

Catawba College President, Dr. Joseph Oxendine, announced the hiring of Amy Harrell Williams as assistant to the president on Oct. 31. Williams replaces Linda Hamilton who retired from Catawba on Oct. 28 after 29 years of service. Williams, a Salisbury native, graduated from Davidson College and has worked at Catawba since 2001. She joined the college as executive assistant to then President Fred Corriher and served in that capacity during the last year before his retirement in 2002.

Before she retired from Catawba College after 29 years service, Linda Hamilton traded tears and memories with Mark Wurster, son of the late college president, Dr. Stephen Wurster, who had hired her in 1982. Linda had given Mark the gift of his late father's academic regalia before her last day at Catawba, October 28. The long-time assistant to the president, who served five different Catawba presidents during her career, still holds the man who brought her to the college in high esteem.

Volunteer Catawba is hopeful that a free t-shirt might serve as both an enticement and as a reminder for members of the campus community to make a commitment to serve others during this academic year. Members of Catawba College's Presidential Search Committee were announced today by Mr. Paul Fisher, Chairman of the Catawba College Board of Trustees. The Committee, chaired by Trustee Bill Graham, a 1983 Catawba graduate, has begun a national search for the college's 23rd president.

When Joe Oxendine came to Catawba College the first time in 1948, he was an 18-year-old Lumbee Indian who had just spent a year working at a Detroit automobile factory making and saving money to put himself through undergraduate school. When Oxendine returned to Catawba this past March, he was an 81-year-old man, retired after a long and successful career in academia.

From April 25-28 of this year, a total of 362 tornadoes ripped through the southern United States, killing at least 350 people. Hardest hit was the state of Alabama, where a 1.5-mile wide tornado left a path of destruction almost 80 miles long and resulted in at least 65 deaths and the destruction or major damage of an estimated 5,000 homes.

On the outside, Catawba College Public Safety Officer Ralph Michael seems a tall, quiet, unassuming man with a ready smile, intent on doing his job. On the inside and when he's off-duty, Ralph Michael is a man serious about his barbecue and dipping sauce — so serious that he's started producing his own version for retail sale. The retired Lexington police officer and native of North Carolina's barbecue capital admits he's been making his Ralph's BBQ and Dipping Sauce for more than 25 years.

Jean Wurster, a librarian at the Corriher-Linn-Black Library at Catawba College, is one of three generations of women in the same family to be a breast cancer survivor. Catawba College may have to get a bigger trophy case just to house all of the awards collected by longtime Head Athletic Trainer Robert Casmus, MS, LAT, ATC, EMT. Last year, he was named an NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer, which will fit nicely alongside his NCAA Division II College and University Athletic Trainer of the Year and North Carolina College and University Athletic Trainer of the Year awards.

Catawba College President Joseph Oxendine encouraged those who received awards during the annual Awards Convocation to "show off, brag modestly, throw your chest out, and feel good." But more important than the awards received, he said, was a characteristic shared by all of the recipients. "At some point, you decided you were going to excel and strive to be the very best," Oxendine told the award recipients. "You won these awards for the spirit of striving to be the very best."

There is celebration at Catawba College as the first of many offices on campus goes live with the new SunGard Higher Education Banner System. In late January, after months of training and software preparation, the Financial Aid Office began packaging financial aid for new Fall 2011 students using the Financial Aid module of the Banner system.

Since June of 2005, George "Ben" Smith has worked in a variety of capacities in Catawba College's Office of Student Affairs. He has served as Assistant Director, responsible for Housing and Residence Life, as Associate Dean of Students, directing Conduct Administration and Intramural and Wellness programs, and since November, he has served as Interim Dean of Students.

Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine, chancellor emeritus of UNC Pembroke, will be the new interim president of Catawba College, effective March 15. The Catawba Board of Trustees made that official on Monday, February 14, after the executive committee of the Board put forth Oxendine's name as its interim candidate of choice during an executive session of the membership.

The Catawba College Alumni Board of Directors honored faculty and staff of the college with an appreciation reception on Tuesday, November 23 in the lobby of Hedrick Administration Building. The purpose of the reception, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, was to give thanks to employees of the college for their support of students and the campus community, as well as their commitment to student success in the classroom and in life.

The Catawba College community celebrated its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Service together on Monday, November 22 in the Cannon Student Center. Santa Claus arrived special delivery on an antique fire truck. Those attending enjoyed hot dogs and chips, hot cider and hot chocolate, roasted peanuts, popcorn, cookies, s'mores, and more.

Because it fell on Earth Day, Catawba College's Awards Convocation on April 22nd turned out to be just a little bit more. Volunteer Catawba will host a Catawba Cares Day on Saturday, April 10th. On that day, several different groups of faculty, staff, and student volunteers will work on beautification projects around campus. Planned projects include painting, mulching and planting flowers, with all materials and tools to be provided by the College.

Thanks to a Catawba College service project, soldiers in Afghanistan have been receiving some comforts from home since August. Three separate shipments, a total of 110 packages, have been shipped to soldiers in the 159th Air Support Battalion, 563d Trans Platoon, part of the 101st Airborne Division stationed at Ft. Campbell Kentucky. The battalion is currently serving at Bagram Air Base, north of Kabul, Afghanistan.

A small Green Pig pin was handed out to all students, faculty and staff who attended Catawba College's Opening Convocation on August 27th and most wondered exactly why. But when College President Dr. Craig Turner officially introduced Green Pig, calling it "a new symbol of our commitment to the environment at Catawba College," the wondering ceased.

Catawba College kicked off its 158th academic year with an opening convocation held Thursday, August 27 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. The event marked the second full year at the institution for Catawba's 21st president, Dr. W. Craig Turner, and was an occasion to recognize some college employees for their years of service.

Catawba College faculty and staff who gathered for their annual fall conference on August 10 learned that the institution will soon welcome its largest class of first-time freshmen since 2001. Three hundred and eleven first-year students will join the campus community and push the total headcount enrolled in the traditional day program to 967.

Two years ago, Catawba College's Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling did not exist. But since it was established within the Facilities Department in 2007, this office has championed recycling and waste reduction efforts on campus with a track record of success, measured in tons.

An interview with Catawba College's Corriher-Linn-Black Library Director, Dr. Steve McKinzie, was published in the December 2008 – January 2009 edition of "Against the Grain." In the interview, McKinzie discussed the recent renovation of the 25,000 square foot library at Catawba.

Catawba College has been honored by the Corporation for National and Community Service with a place on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to America's communities. The award was announced on Feb. 9th at the 91st annual meeting of the American Council on Education.

Thanks to assistance from a local eatery, Catawba College's Phi Beta Lambda Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America hosted a successful fundraiser, the proceeds of which will support student travel and lodging expenses at an upcoming state conference this spring.

Stressing the value of a private college education is important, Catawba College's new Vice President of Enrollment Lois Williams says. "Catawba is a gem of a school. It has dedicated faculty and staff and great facilities. This type of educational experience is truly transformative."

Rashad Smith of Salisbury, Associate Dean of Admissions at Catawba College, was recently inducted into the East Rutherford High School Hall of Fame. Smith, a 1996 graduate of East Rutherford High, participated in football and track and field there.

Dr. W. Craig Turner was officially installed as Catawba College's 21st President on President's Day, Monday, February 16, 2009. The date coincided with the federal holiday, Washington's Birthday or President's Day, and the annual meeting of the College's Board of Trustees.

Catawba College's President, Dr. Craig Turner, asked college trustees to "dream for us" during remarks he made at that group's semi-annual meeting held October 20 and 21 on campus. The meeting marked Turner's first official one with trustees since joining the institution as its 21st president on June 1.

Tom E. Smith of Salisbury, who has served for the past 11 years as chairman of the Catawba College Board of Trustees, turned the reins over to Paul Fisher of Salisbury at the Board's semi-annual meeting held October 20-21 at the college.

Catawba College students and residents around the campus have more than six months to prove that they'll use the Salisbury Transit system. This thanks to a new agreement worked out between Salisbury Transit and the College's Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling.

Catawba College became a little greener recently. On Monday, August 25th, the institution's housekeeping staff began using green cleaning products in nine buildings on campus. But adoption of the green cleaning products did not just happen, it evolved as housekeeping staff tried various green seal products and made their own assessments about which would do the best job. It's their official College picture ID and allows them access to almost everything on campus, but it can also be used like a debit card at some key on-campus locations and at several local merchants.

The tour, coordinated by Associate Professor of Marketing, Dr. Jack Green, is offered through EF Education Tours and includes visits to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Amanda G. Bosch, director of curriculum Materials Center in Catawba College's Department of Teacher Education, hosted the N.C. Curriculum Materials Center directors on Catawba's campus April 25. Bosch serves as president of this state organization made up of curriculum materials center directors from various teacher education departments in North Carolina.

Longtime employee of the college, Dorothy Earle of Salisbury, was surprised by friends and colleagues at the dedication of the Dorothy Pope Earle Conference Room on Friday, February 29th in Ketner Hall on campus. Dorothy retired in December of 2006 after more than 23 years of service to the institution.

Catawba College Chaplain and Senior Vice-President Dr. Kenneth Clapp participated in the Institute on College Student Values held on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

Bridgette Edwards Gibbs of Salisbury, a 2002 Catawba College alumna and director of event planning at the college, completed a certification in Meeting and Event Planning during the fall 2007 semester at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Kim Soo Karate is a form of the Chayon-Ryu martial arts that allows one to train without injury or fear of being hurt. Master Mitchell, a seventh degree black belt, has taught martial arts for 36 years and at Catawba College for over 22 years. Mitchell trains under one of the most renowned martial arts teachers in the world, Grandmaster Kim Soo, a 10th degree Black Belt.

Douglas A. Stanley of Salisbury, a 2004 alumnus of Catawba College, was recently promoted to a programmer/analyst position in Catawba's Computer Services Department. Stanley also recently earned a master's degree in information technology and management from UNC Greensboro.

(November 19, 2007) — Phil Kirk, vice president of external relations for Catawba College and Chairman Emeritus of the State Board of Education, has been elected chair-elect of the Public School Forum of North Carolina. Next July, Kirk will succeed Sen. Katie Dorsett of Guilford County as the chair of the Raleigh-based organization.

The Catawba Chiefs Club honored Dr. Robert E. Knott and his wife, Brenda, at Tribal Treats Saturday, November 10th before the final home game of Dr. Knott's tenure as President of Catawba. Senior Vice President of the college, Tom Childress, told the crowd of nearly 400 of Dr. Knott's numerous accomplishments as President and Chiefs President, Tippie Miller, presented Dr.Knott and Brenda with gifts of gratitude from the club.

Phil Kirk, vice president for external relations at Catawba College, public speaker and consultant, was presented with a resolution from The Council of State Chambers at its semi-annual meeting at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. The resolution commends Kirk for several notable accomplishments, including his career contributions to helping restore respect to public schools, elevating the political process, and forming professional stature among business lobbyists.

Catawba College received the Salisbury Community Appearance Commission Award for the month of October 2007 for the appearance of the Hedrick Hall Lawn/Garden area. Catawba Grounds Supervisor Jeff Hartley, and his staff, Gene Trexler and Sawaha Brown, are responsible for this area.

The Catawba College Facilities Department is encouraging all members of the college community to start seeing green this academic year. That department is taking a leadership position on campus, advocating recycling, use of sustainable, green, and recycled products, encouraging conservation and waste reduction, and even establishing a new position to coordinate those efforts.

Various faculty and staff members of the Catawba College community were recognized for their years of service to the institution during fall convocation Thursday, August 30 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. The convocation also marked the official beginning of the College’s 156th academic year, 82 of those years in Salisbury.

Faculty and staff members at Catawba College have been tapped to serve on a committee that will guide the institution's work in support of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Committee members begin their work two months after Catawba joined close to 300 other colleges and universities nationwide in supporting the ACUPCC.

Dr. Robert Knott, Catawba College's 20th President, publicly announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2007-2008 academic year during an annual gathering of faculty and staff August 14th. Knott, who is entering his sixth year of service at the institution, said his planned retirement "was in the best interest of the College" and would allow new leadership "to build on what we've done and move into a new and exciting future."

Catawba College's Vice President for External Relations and Chairman Emeritus of the State Board of Education Phillip Kirk is a member of a new Blue Ribbon Charter School Commission convened by the State Board of Education.

On Monday, June 4, Phillip "Phil" J. Kirk, Jr. was named the seventh recipient of the Jay Robinson Leadership Award given by the Public School Forum of NC. A $5,000 cash prize was given by BB&T and an anonymous donor. The award honors the extraordinary leadership and service of Dr. Jay Robinson, former school superintendent and State Board of Education Chair.

Surrounded by friends and family, longtime Catawba College employee, Oliver Gilbert Scott of Salisbury, was recognized April 26th when a walkway and fountain on campus were dedicated in her honor. Three Catawba College alumni were honored as recipients of the College's Distinguished Alumnus Award during a barbecue luncheon held Saturday, Nov. 4 in the Goodman Gymnasium of the Abernethy Physical Education Center before the football game against Presbyterian College.

Rashad Smith, an associate dean of admissions at Catawba College, was among the presenters at the annual conference of the National Association for College Admission Counseling. His presentation, "Electronic Communications: Websites, E-newsletters, E-mails, RSS Feeds, Blogs, and Blending Print and Electronic Communications," focused on different electronic communication tools available to institutions.

Faculty and staff members of the Catawba College community were honored for their years of service during fall convocation Thursday, August 31 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. The College was also officially convened for its 155th academic year.

The General Assembly of North Carolina, acting upon the recommendation of Senate President Pro Tempore Marc Basnight, has appointed Robert Casmus, head athletic trainer at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, to the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners. This board, authorized by the General Assembly in 1997, issues the occupational licenses to athletic trainers in North Carolina.

Catawba College's new vice president for external affairs, Phillip J. Kirk '67, was among six North Carolina leaders who were the recipients of the 14th annual UNC Wilmington Watson School of Education's Razor Walker Awards.

Local students were among those honored April 20 during Catawba College's annual Awards Convocation. The event was held in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus and Catawba's Vice President and Dean of the College Dr. Barbara Hetrick noted that the convocation was an annual celebration of "all that is excellent."

Eric Abbott presented a juried paper at The United States Institute for Theater Technologies held in Louisville, Kentucky March 28th through May 1st. He also gave portfolio reviews for students from other schools. He was accompanied to the conference by Junior Will Randall.

Catawba College students, faculty and staff donated 188 hours of their time last week during Catawba Cares Week of Service. Students entertained residents at Trinity Oaks with songs, helped out at Rowan Helping Ministries Overnight Shelter, and even cleaned stalls at the Horse Protection Society.

Catawba College is among several high education institutions across the country that will participate in the CDWG Technology Advisory Group. Marcia Miller joined the Catawba College community as director of career services on August 1. She had been employed as assistant director of the career development center at Northern Kentucky University since 1995.

Dr. Janice Fuller, a local poet and Catawba College’s writer-in-residence, will have one of her poems included in the July 20 broadcast of “The Writer’s Almanac,” a daily radio program hosted by Garrison Keillor. Fuller’s “My Aunt Raises Violets from Africa” will be read on the program which is broadcast to about 280 non-commercial public radio stations around the country.

Catawba College will have two new area coordinators in the Student Life Department when the 2005-2006 academic year begins next month. Katie Slagle and Ben Smith are already on the job, said Dan Sullivan, Catawba’s Director of Residence Life.

Dr. John Wear, director of the Catawba College Center for the Environment, will speak July 21 to a five-person delegation from the International Visitor Leadership Program. The participants will travel to Salisbury to learn about environmental education and community participation.

Robert J. Casmus, head athletic trainer at Catawba College was honored earlier this month while attending the National Athletic Trainers’ Association annual meeting in Indianapolis , Indiana. He received N.A.T.A.’s Atheltic Trainer Service Award for dedicated service and outstanding contribution to the profession of athletic training and to the Association. He also received the Dan Libera Service Award from the Board of Certification, Inc. for his outstanding contributions.

All former Catawba College choir members are invited to participate in a very special Choir Alumni Reunion July 8 and 9 on campus! Choir alumni are invited to bring their families and return for a weekend of music making. Events get underway Friday, July 8, with check in slated at the Williams Music Building on campus between 4 and 6 p.m. A Presidential Welcome Reception follows between 7 and 9 p.m. at the home of College President and First Lady, Robert and Brenda Knott.

Gordon A. Kirkland Jr., Associate Dean of Admissions at Catawba College, is moving to the athletics department, it was announced today by Dennis Davidson, director of athletics. Kirkland, a member of the admissions staff since 2000, will become assistant to the athletic director, effective June 1. Davidson said that Kirkland’s duties will include coordinating all athletic recruiting, assisting Catawba’s coaches with initial contacts and campus visits, as well as other duties.

Eight members of the Catawba College faculty and staff were among those recognized during the 2005 Awards Convocation held April 21 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus.

Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, Assistant Dean of Catawba College and Associate Professor of English, has been awarded a Fulbright Lectureship in American literature in Kiev, Ukraine for the 2005-06 academic year through the Fulbright Scholars Program.

Catawba College students and faculty attended the 66th annual meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB) in Florence, Ala., April 13-16. Biology Professor Dr. Michael Baranski, past president of ASB, judged the Odum Prize Competition for that meeting.

All four faculty members of the Catawba College Psychology Department, along with several of their students, participated in the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association held recently in Nashville, Tenn. Faculty members attending included Drs. Lyn Boulter, Karen Horner, Al Roberts, and Sheila Brownlow.

Dr. Laurel Eason, a professor of English at Catawba College, recently participated in the Association of Core Texts and Courses conference held April 7-11 in Vancouver, British Columbia. While there, she delivered a paper entitled, “Mario Vargas Llosa’s Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter: A Comedic Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.”

Three members of the Catawba College Music Department participated in the plenary session, “Musical Inclusiveness: the Catawba College Initiative,” at the College Music Society – Mid-Atlantic Chapter annual meeting held March 19 at West Virginia University.

Two of Catawba College’s creative writing students from Salisbury are among four N.C. college students honored in the Charlotte Writers’ Club’s annual Anthony Abbott Poetry Award for undergraduates.

Catawba College Writer-In-Residence Dr. Janice Fuller is one of 30 N.C. poets selected by the state’s new Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer to be included in Byer’s “A Poem a Day” project during April, poetry month.

Dr. Janice Fuller, Catawba College’s writer-in-residence, has been invited by the Writers Group of the Triad to participate in a poetry ready to kick off Poetry Month. She will read from her poetry, along with Fred Chappel and Ann Deagon, at the Green Bean Café in Greensboro at 7 p.m. Monday, April 4. The Dave Fox Trio will also perform that evening, providing jazz interludes

Catawba College faculty and staff members pride themselves on their professional accomplishments outside the classroom. Following are some of their recent activities.

Catawba College’s Facilities Department was recognized Thursday, Feb. 17 during a community meeting held on campus. The department received the third annual Extreme Maintenance Makeover from the MPACT Learning Center in Greensboro in recognition of the challenges it has overcome and the efforts it has made to improve the service component of the department over the past three years.

For 24 years, Oliver Scott of Salisbury has planned luncheons, dinners, retreats and other special occasions for the Catawba College Board of Trustees. But on Valentine’s evening, the tables were turned, and trustees honored Oliver during an event held at the home of Mona and Lee Wallace.

Gordon A. Kirkland has been named associate dean of admissions at Catawba College. The promotion was announced recently by Dr. Russell Watjen, Catawba’s vice president and dean of admissions.

Retired Catawba College faculty and staff members were feted at a luncheon held Thursday, July 22 in the Hurley Room on campus.

When Catawba College sought a new director of major gifts and planned giving, administrators knew they wanted a seasoned professional with a strong background in finance. They found those attributes in Salisbury resident Eric Nianouris who began his new position in April.

Kimberly A. Betts has joined the Catawba College Center for the Environment as the executive administrative assistant. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Brandi Bettis Orbin, formerly assistant director of development stewardship at Georgia Institute of Technology, has joined the staff of the Catawba College Center for the Environment. She will serve as coordinator of fund raising and volunteers.

A new Center for International Studies is being established at Catawba College and Dr. Kurt Corriher has been tapped as its director, effective June 1. College President Dr. Robert Knott made the announcement at the annual President’s Circle Dinner held May 12 on campus.
