Members of the Catawba College community gathered in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on April 23 to celebrate achievement. The occasion was the annual Awards Convocation.Scheduled the day after Earth Day, the awards distributed were eco-friendly, made of Catawba blue, 100% recycled glass. They symbolized the college's commitment to environmental responsibility and are a reminder to the recipients to promote a greener, more sustainable lifestyle.

Robert Casmus, head athletic trainer at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, was one of two individuals inducted on March 23 into the North Carolina Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame. The 36th annual NCATA Spring Awards and Business Meeting was held at Carolinas Healthcare System – Northeast in Concord.

"Every Body Needs an Athletic Trainer" is the 2013 theme for the month of March recognizing Athletic Trainers (ATs) as experts in taking care of all kinds of injuries and for their commitment to helping people prevent injuries and keeping people healthy and active.

Catawba College freshman, Nathan Hatley, is one of the recipients of a 2013 Sacks for Cystic Fibrosis Scholarship, awarded by the Boomer Esiason Foundation. Nathan was one of the $10,000 scholarship recipients announced on Super Bowl Sunday. "This scholarship is going straight toward my tuition," Hatley said, noting that he had submitted his application materials for the scholarship to the Foundation in early January. "I'm just so grateful to have received it."

New members will be inducted into the Catawba College Athletic Training Hall of Fame on Feb. 9. The induction of the Class of 2013 will take place between noon and 2 p.m. in Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus. The 2013 inductees, both from the Class of 1995, are Bryan Fass of Davidson and Carrie Graham of Coventry, Conn. Fourteen Catawba College students employed their unique gifts and talents in service to others as interns with tax-exempt nonprofit organizations during the summer of 2012. Funding and coordination for the program were provided through the college's Lilly Center for Vocation and Values. While these students clearly benefitted from the experiential learning opportunities offered through such internships, they also filled vital roles within the programs they served.

Head athletic trainer Bob Casmus was on the field when the collision occurred between Tyrone Johnson, a defensive back, and his teammates as they leapt for the ball. "It was very intense and somewhat violent," Casmus said.

Bunker Hill High recently named Catawba College Alumnus Lee Miller as the new athletic director for the upcoming school year. Miller, assistant principal at Bunker Hill, will add the title of athletic director to his duties and replaces the recently retired Jim Woodruff. Miller is a 1990 graduate of Bunker Hill and began his career as a teacher and coach at St. Stephens High in 1995 after graduating from Catawba.

Lindsay Smith of Salisbury contends that her research data supports her theory that there is a correlation between head injuries and Alzheimer's disease. The research she outlined in a paper presented at a super-regional convention of Alpha Chi, national college honor society, was so convincing to the scholarship committee that it won her an Alpha Chi Region III scholarship.

Catawba College students from various disciplines shared their diverse research projects during the 2012 Interdisciplinary Research Symposium held Thursday, April 26 in the Leonard Lounge of the Cannon Student Center. Faculty, staff and students on campus dropped by during the two-hour event to listen and learn from these students.
