Showing off a pair of red boxing gloves given to him by his friend George Foreman, the former Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World, McCrory relayed a story about his own failure to win the North Carolina gubernatorial election in 2008.

Catawba College alumnus Tomas Smogner '12, is one of only two students chosen to represent Ernst and Young - Sweden in the International Intern Leadership Conference this summer in Florida. Only twelve students were selected from the Nordic countries. Tomas majored in Accounting at Catawba and was a member of the Men's Basketball team. He is currently working toward a Master's degree in Accounting, Auditing, and Analysis at Stockholm University.

Catawba College alumnus Richard Steinert '81, the artistic director of Ballet Pensacola, will be back at his alma mater April 21-24 to work with college students and to offer master classes for them and the members of the Salisbury-Rowan community. Steinert, who visited campus in February 2012, has enjoyed a long and successful career as a dancer, a choreographer and an artistic director at some of the country's premier ballet companies.

An article by 2011 Catawba College alumna Kacey Hoover is featured in the April 2013 issue of the award-winning magazine of the American Solar Energy Society, Solar Today. Hoover earned her degree in environmental science from Catawba in 2011 and is pursuing a master's in Technology with a concentration in Appropriate Technology at Appalachian State University. She works as an energy analyst and specializes in rate structure analysis and estimating utility bills.

2011 Catawba College Alumnus Joseph "Joe" S. Manser is now a graduate student at the University of Notre Dame's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He recently shared a video link to his research concerning assembling and testing quantum dot solar cells in the lab there.

Five new members will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 27, during the festivities of the Hall of Fame's 36th anniversary. The UNC Nutrition Research Institute in Kannapolis has received a $5.3 million grant to study fetal alcohol disorders in South Africa. The funds are from the National Institute of Health's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The study will be conducted by Dr. Philip May '69, a faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Nutrition Research Institute (NRI) and Department of Nutrition.

A new endowed scholarship established at Catawba College memorializes Anna Katherine Gregory Vance, a 2003 alumna who died in April 2011. The Scholarship was established by her husband, Dr. Shawn L. Vance of Kannapolis.

A 1962 Catawba College alumna, the Reverend June Grubb, was honored by her alma mater as the recipient of the institution's 2013 College Church/Ministry Award. Grubb, who makes her home in Lexington and is active in the First Reformed United Church of Christ there, was recognized in February at a Church/College Dinner held on Catawba's campus.

When Gordon A. Kirkland, Jr. '70 of Clemmons retired as director of athletic development at Catawba College in December, he did so quietly, likely hoping for little or no fanfare. Catawba College Alumnus and Trustee Gregory M. Alcorn '79 of Salisbury is one of three new members appointed by N.C. Governor Pat McCrory '78 to the State Board of Education. That announcement was made Wednesday, Jan. 30. Catawba College has announced that Curtis Walker, a former All-American player for the Indians, has accepted the position of head football coach. The announcement was made today by Brien Lewis, Catawba's president. Walker, defensive coordinator at Western Carolina University since last January, follows Chip Hester, who resigned on Nov. 16 after 11 seasons. Hester will remain at Catawba as Director of Athletic Development, replacing Gordon Kirkland who is retiring at the end of December.

One of the individuals inducted into Catawba College's Ketner School of Business Hall of Fame on November 13 was the man who started it in 2007. Philip J. Kirk ’67 of Raleigh, a member of the Business Hall of Fame’s Class of 2012, was credited with establishing the Hall of Fame when he was employed at Catawba as the Vice President of External Relations.

Catawba's Blue Masque Theatre Hall of Fame will honor four new inductees on Friday, October 26, during the college's Homecoming Weekend. Those being honored for their meritorious lives in the theatre arts includetheatre administrator and preservationist John Bell, class of 1976; dance administrator, choreographer, and teacher Richard Steinert, class of 1981; composer, song writer and sound designer Mike Yionoulis, class of 1988; and longtime Catawba theatre arts professor, Dayna Anderson.

An original play about the Dorothea Dix Hospital by Dr. Janice Fuller, Catawba's Writer-in-Residence and Professor of English; Directed by 2008 Catawba Alumna Brianna Smith - Dix, a Story of the Back-Ward Women is a new show by local Salisbury playwright and poet Janice Fuller. The play will be offered at Lee Street Theatre in collaboration with TapRoot Ensemble in its East Coast Premiere.

Pat McCrory, the N.C. Republican gubernatorial candidate, seven-term mayor of Charlotte and a 1978 Catawba College alumnus, stumped for votes at his alma mater on Thursday, Sept. 13. Catawba College alumnus Sheldon Rogers had an impromptu performance with music star Ingrid Michaelson in Lancaster, PA. A graduate of Catawba's Musical Theatre program, Rogers was in the front row at Michaelson's show and sang an unplanned duet with the New York-based indie-pop singer-songwriter. He made quite an impression on both the audience and Michaelson herself.

"Dirty Barbie and Other Girlhood Tales," a one-woman show which made its world premiere in Salisbury in March 2012, was created by Catawba alumna Denise Laughlin Stewart. The show was recent listed as one of the top five must-see shows in Edinburgh by the Daily Record.

When the Uwharrie Players of Stanly County open their production of "Camelot" on July 27, two Catawba College graduates will be a big part of it. Heather Wilson is the artistic director and John Stafford is the musical director.

2008 Catawba College alumnus Justin Dionne is directing the upcoming production of The Retreat from Moscow by William Nicholson, the author and playwright of Shadowlands. The St. Thomas Players and Center for Faith & the Arts are presenting the production, which runs August 2-5 and August 9-11 in the Florence-Busby-Corriher Theatre on the Catawba College campus.Dionne is directing his former theatre arts professor, Dr. Kurt Corriher, who performs one of the three roles in the production.

The Pittsburg City Paper recently posted a rave review of Osage County, calling it "spellbinding." The production was produced by Throughline Theatre, a company created and operated by Catawba College Alumni. Joey Yow, a 2007 Catawba graduate, directed the production and was highly praised for accomplishing the impossible despite his youth. The production was cited to be a "profound showcase" for the new theatre company.

Andrew Tamer, a 2011 Catawba College alumnus, has been named as Associate Editor of Charlotte's Access to Justice Journal for the upcoming school year. Andrew graduated with a degree in Political Science, double-majoring in Pre-Law and International Relations and minoring in Economics. He is currently attending the Charlotte School of Law.

A paper authored by a Catawba College professor of psychology and two college alumnae has been accepted for publication in the journal, "Psychology." Dr. Sheila Brownlow and alumnae Amanda Kanoy of Salisbury and Tiffany F. Sowers of Asheville authored the paper entitled "Can reward obviate stereotype threat effects on mental rotation tasks?"

Bunker Hill High recently named Catawba College Alumnus Lee Miller as the new athletic director for the upcoming school year. Miller, assistant principal at Bunker Hill, will add the title of athletic director to his duties and replaces the recently retired Jim Woodruff. Miller is a 1990 graduate of Bunker Hill and began his career as a teacher and coach at St. Stephens High in 1995 after graduating from Catawba.

2008 Catawba alumna Aileen [Thomson] Rhodes, will be moving to Thailand with her husband in August to work on legal reform for a Burmese organization. Aileen will be sharing her experiences on her blog, Adventures of a Nerdy Nomad. The newlywed couple will first travel to Helsinki, St. Petersberg, Moscow, Beijing and various cities in China for their honeymoon before settling in Thailand.

"A Raisin in the Sun" will be offered by Evening Star Productions, Inc. , a Charlotte-based production company founded and operated by 2011 Catawba College alumnus Tony Mullins of Charlotte. The production will run at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14 and July 20 and 21 at the Duke Energy Theater at Spirit Square in uptown Charlotte.

Friendship, faith and a kidney have come together to irrevocably connect two Catawba College alumnae and the husband of one. In February, Jeremy Morris of West Palm Beach, Fla., husband of Kate Merrell Morris '04, donated a kidney to his wife's best friend, Ashley Quinones '04 of Sanford. For Jeremy and Kate, the decision to donate the kidney was one grounded in faith.

Evangelist Bill F. Sheeks, a 1956 Catawba College graduate, will lead a four-day revival July 1-4 at Fellowship of Praise Church of God. Sheeks was born in Kannapolis, N.C., in 1934 and began his ministry after graduating from Lee College in 1954. He received his bachelor's degree from Catawba and his master's and doctorate degrees from the California Graduate School of Theology in 1979.

Catawba College alumnus Kevin Leonard, lobbyist for the N.C. Association of County Commissioners, was promoted to deputy director. Leonard will share the deputy director title with Patrice Roesler. Leonard has been with the association since 2009 and has worked for Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice and for the state Department of Labor as a lobbyist. Leonard graduated from Catawba in 1995 with a degree in Political Science.

Jordan, a former Hunter Huss High standout, is joining the Blue Devils baseball coaching staff as an assistant coach. Catawba's Baseball team will take its first ever trip to the college Division II World Series. Catawba, ranked #4 nationally with a record of 43-15, will take on #11 ranked University of Indianapolis (46-14) in the opening round on Sunday at 1 pm at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Jobs, better jobs, and more education were on the minds of Catawba College graduates Saturday, May 12, following two commencement exercises held in Keppel Auditorium.

A 1956 Catawba College alumnus and six-time U.S. Ambassador, William Lacy Swing, received the O.B. Michael Award for 2012 at the college's 10 a.m. commencement exercise on May 12. Swing, a native of Lexington, N.C., has enjoyed a long career at the U.S. Department of State, serving as a six-time ambassador and managing some of the largest diplomatic missions and foreign development and humanitarian aid programs in two hemispheres.

Dennis Reed of Charlotte, 2006 graduate of Catawba College, has been selected by the America's Got Talent judges along with his troupe, Inspire the Fire (ITF), to move on from Las Vegas to the next round of competition in New York.

Bradley J. Hamm, dean of the Indiana University School of Journalism, has been named dean of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, Northwestern Provost Daniel I. Linzer announced today. Hamm will join the faculty as dean-designate on July 1 and assume the deanship on Sept. 1.

Although he died in 1989, memories of U.S. Congressman Earl Baker Ruth flowed as freely on April 26 as traffic on the highway that was dedicated in his memory. A ceremony, emceed by N.C. Board of Transportation member, Ralph Womble, and attended by Ruth's family, past and present elected officials, and his former students, friends and colleagues, was held that day in Peeler Crystal Lounge on the Catawba College campus.

Catawba College President Brien Lewis had a chance to meet and learn about the achievements of some of the college's best and brightest students during his first week on the job. That opportunity came for Lewis at the college's annual Awards Convocation held April 19 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel.

Four new members will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on April 28, during the festivities of the Hall of Fame's 35th anniversary. The inductees are (with graduation year): John D. Coble '52 (deceased); Scherrie A. Dalton '98 of Martinsville, Va.; Gregory K. Payne '98 of Anderson, S.C.; and Bill H. Wilhelm '57 (deceased).

"The most important thing this college did for me was let me become a student here," Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine recalled Sunday, April 15, as he accepted Catawba College's prestigious Adrian L. Shuford, Jr. Award for Distinguished Service. Oxendine, a 1952 alumnus of Catawba and chancellor emeritus of UNC Pembroke, was tapped to serve as interim president of his alma mater last March while a national search was launched for Catawba's next president.

EDITOR'S NOTE: James C. Lyerly, a graduate of Catawba College and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, organized his own funeral home in Salisbury in 1957. His son Brent is now president of the Lyerly Funeral Home, which was destroyed by a fire on Friday, April 13, 2012. Though devastated by a lunchtime fire that destroyed Lyerly Funeral Home's main building Friday, Brent Lyerly said the business will rebuild. "We will be back, hopefully, with the Lord's help," said Lyerly.

The musical, based on Mark Twain's classic, "The Tales of Huckleberry Finn," will be performed in Keppel Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19 through Saturday, April 21, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22. The April 22 matinee will be presented by the Rowan County Concert Association.

Thanks to the efforts of friends and fellow alumni of the late Henry C. Bernhardt '50, a fully funded scholarship has been established in his memory at Catawba. The fund-raising effort for the scholarship was led by two close friends of Bernhardt, Tuck Gudger '48 and Walt Ramseur '49. Preference for the scholarship will be given to student athletes and/or members of the marching band.

Two faculty emeriti from Catawba College's Theatre Arts Department were honored Feb. 20 with a facility on campus named in their honor. College President, Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine, recognized Dr. Hoyt M. McCachren, Jr. and Dr. James R. Epperson during a dinner on campus. He unveiled a bronze plaque and announced that the McCachren-Epperson Theatre Arts Office Facility is being named in their honor.

Three members were inducted into the Catawba College Athletic Training Hall of Fame on Feb. 18 during a ceremony held in the Robertson College-Community Center on campus. The ceremony was sponsored by the Catawba College Athletics Department and the Catawba College Athletic Training Program.

I am trying to make my last few months worthwhile and successful. I spent New Year's in Kuta, Bali which is, in reality, a terrible place. But for a group of 20 somethings who have limited access to normal 20something activities, it serves its purpose, i.e. I was able to eat four burritos in three days.

And while the high-wire act has not been slowed in his time playing professionally overseas, Rutherford prefers a different persona now. Just call him "go-to guy."

When 1981 alumnus Richard Steinert came back to Catawba in February, he shared more than just some dance techniques. He shared some of his life experiences with students and gave them insights into his long and successful career as a dancer, a choreographer and an artistic director at some of the country's premier ballet companies.

Ladies Night has become a fixture as part of Blue-White Weekend and this year is no exception. It will be held Friday, March 30th at 6 pm (not the usual 7 pm) in Kirkland Lobby of Goodman Gymnasium. When Independence High School's production of "Grease" opens next weekend, drama teacher Paula Baldwin will have come full circle. Baldwin got her start in acting at Mount Pleasant High School in Cabarrus County, and attended Catawba College on a drama scholarship. After earning her MFA in acting and directing at UNC Greensboro, she headed to New York City, where she lived and worked for eight years.

Noting that only two higher education institutions in the Carolinas were selected to receive a prestigious Duke Energy 2011 Power Partner Award, Catawba College President Joseph B. Oxendine accepted Catawba's award during a Jan. 25 luncheon hosted by Duke Energy on campus. Oxendine explained that Catawba College and Clemson University were the only two higher education institutions tapped for the awards.

Four members will be inducted into the Catawba College Athletic Training Hall of Fame on Feb. 18. The induction of the Class of 2012 will take place between noon and 2 p.m. in Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus. The Catawba Conservation Camp, a summer camp that teaches middle school girls about the importance of conserving and protecting the natural environment, will continue operating this summer, thanks to a $25,000 Ribbon of Hope grant. In late 2011, the NC GlaxoSmithKline Foundation's Board of Directors awarded the Ribbon of Hope grant to Catawba College to continue its Catawba Conservation Camp or C3 that began in 2009 with funding provided by a three-year grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

The annual Blue-White Spring Football game is set for 10:00am on Saturday, March 31, 2012. Come and watch the 2012 Indian squad as they begin the road back from last season's disappointing year. A lot of young players got their first taste of Division II football last fall and will be much improved as a result.

Please join us for a memorial service honoring the life of our friend Louise Tucker who passed away on December 18th. The service will take place on Sunday, January 22 at 2:00 p.m. in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. A 1944 graduate of Catawba College, she went to work for the College where she served as secretary to the registrar, associate registrar and assistant to the vice president for planning and academic services. She retired in 1986.

Stephanie Bruce grew up in public housing. Now she helps people move out of it. Bruce, 45, serves as the new coordinator for the Family Self-Sufficiency program at Salisbury Housing Authority. Bruce graduated from the program herself in 2004, learning skills and saving enough money to move out of Civic Park Apartments a year later and buy her own home.

A new scholarship has been established at Catawba College in memory of the late automobile dealer, Hubert B. Parks of Kernersville. The Michael and Parks First Family Scholarship was created through gifts from Catawba alumnus and automobile dealer Chester A. The recent big news was my trip to India to visit my dad, who was there for a month volunteering. I went with a fellow volunteer named Samantha. The first thing that struck me about India was its similarity to Indonesia. It is crowded and dangerous to cross the street, it is dirty and there is so much pollution the inside of your nose turns black. Yet at the same time it is oddly charming and enjoyable.

Those being honored for their meritorious lives in the theatre arts are New York based actor Bill Tatum, class of 1970; theatre entrepreneur Jerry Moore, class of 1974; New York costumer and wardrobe supervisor Ginnie Patton, class of 1979; and Charlotte, N.C. designer, director and actor Jim Glouster, class of 1984.

Spartanburg Day School in Spartanburg, South Carolina has announced new faculty and staff members for the 2011-2012 school year. Tuesday, August 9, 2011 was a hot summer evening on the Catawba College campus, but a really cool event took place in the Kirkland Lobby of the Abernethy Physical Education Center. Rowan County Commissioners approved a resolution today recommending that the N.C. Department of Transportation name five miles of the highway "Congressman Earl B. Ruth Memorial Highway."Ruth, a native of Spencer, was a coach, professor, Athletic Director and Dean of Students at Catawba College before being elected to Congress in 1968. A Republican, he won re-election twice and served briefly as governor of America Samoa, from 1975 to 1976.

When Joe Oxendine came to Catawba College the first time in 1948, he was an 18-year-old Lumbee Indian who had just spent a year working at a Detroit automobile factory making and saving money to put himself through undergraduate school. When Oxendine returned to Catawba this past March, he was an 81-year-old man, retired after a long and successful career in academia.

1948 Catawba College alumnus Joe Riley grew up in New York and Pennsylvania but headed south to attend Catawba College and eventually make Salisbury his home.

A cigar store will open in a 110-year-old Victorian cottage in downtown Salisbury, thanks to a $41,000 grant from the state. Darren Moody, a Catawba College graduate who lives in Salisbury, plans to open The Perfect Smoke in six to nine months. Salisbury will receive a Main Street Solutions Fund grant to help pay for the $124,000 rehabilitation of the house at 213 S. Lee St. near the Norvell Theater, behind City Hall.

Nesbitt, needing a job while finishing up college, became a school bus driver and plans to drive full-time until he finds a job in his field. His driving skills landed him second place in the local school bus roadeo before securing a fourth place win in the district competition. He now has hopes of a possible win at the international level.

Ted Demarest, Class of '77, has been named Delaware School Psychologist of the Year for 2011. He received the award at the annual conference of the Delaware Association of School Psychologists in May. Ted has been a school psychologist for the Colonial School District in New Castle, Delaware, since 1982. During his tenure with the school district, he has served preschool through secondary students.

Catawba College alumna Dinah Carpenter retires from Overton Elementary School after teaching 24 years. Carpenter received her teaching certification from Catawba.

Each summer Inspire The Fire (ITF), founded by 2006 Catawba College graduate Dennis Reed of Charlotte, facilitates a week-long conference for youth (ages 10-21) to exhibit their talents through music, dance and dramatic workshops. On July 18-24, 2011 teens will be engaged in an intense artistic learning environment that will promote self-confidence and foster an aspiration for an improved way of life.

Kathy Conte, a 1973 alumna of Catawba College, retired from Charles England Elementary School after a 38-year career in education. After receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at Catawba, Conte started her career at Cecil School teaching third grade. Later, she taught at Southwest Elementary School and Dunbar School, which was later renamed to Charles England.

Renewal forms for Chiefs Club members have been mailed. 2011-12 Chiefs President Bob Setzer is expecting an increase in membership from last year. 2010-2011 membership stood at 451 after four consecutive years over 500. Setzer said "with a very attractive five game home football schedule including UNC Pembroke and our economy showing signs of improvement, we look for new members and we hope our former ones renew as well."

"They are always so excited to see her," Jennifer Sheppard, the school's Title I coordinator, said. Patience really is a virtue and one I do not have in abundant quantities. However, I do think I am getting better. For example, last Saturday I had planned to give a test but was then told school was cancelled at 10am, right before my class. One of the teachers' fathers had passed away so we were all going to pay our respects.

It was 87-year-old Martha Rhea Hartley Platt of Salisbury who was the first baccalaureate candidate to walk across the Keppel Auditorium stage during Catawba College's Commencement Exercise on Saturday, May 14. For Platt, it was an opportunity to remedy a regret she had had for 52 years.

Catawba College alumnus Pat McCrory '78, the former seven-term Mayor of Charlotte, N.C. and the 2008 N.C. Republican Gubernatorial candidate, visited campus on April 7. He spoke to students in Dr. Michael Bitzer's State and Local Politics class about politics and issues he has encountered running for public office.

Catawba College alumnus Grant Gibson '10 has been admitted to McMaster University's graduate program in Economics. Gibson, who majored in Sustainable Business and Community Development and was a member of the men's swimming team, intends to earn his Ph.D. in Economics at McMaster, which is a member of the "Group of Thirteen" in Canada. The G-13 is considered "top-tier" and is very research intensive.

A 1944 Catawba College alumna, Edith Smith Kenerly Holshouser, has created a new scholarship fund at her alma mater that will benefit students from her native Rowan County. The Kenerly Smith Family Scholarship is a way for Mrs. Holshouser to pay tribute to the fact that she, her late first husband, Harold Kenerly '47, and four of her late siblings, William Lamont Smith '33, Maxine Smith Carlton '37, Quay Thurston Smith '41 and Martha Viola Smith Adams '41, all graduated from Catawba.

Catawba College has produced and will air several television commercials in select cable markets during the first quarter of this year. Simone Grant Timoney, a 1983 alumna of Catawba College, died in November 2005 after a six-year battle with breast cancer. By Susan Shinn, Catawba College News Service. You'd think a 23-year-old might be intimidated about directing a choir that's 100 years old. There's a lot to be said for youthful enthusiasm. Matt Newton, a 2010 graduate of Catawba, took the reins of the Salisbury-Rowan Choral Society this summer. The society is a century old this year. Newton graduated from high school in Raleigh and came to Catawba as a theater major, but soon found out it wasn't for him.

The Center for the Environment has received a great deal of interest in its Catawba College Energy Corps, a program that will facilitate the placement of as many as 17 students or recent graduates in on-the-job green energy positions. Candidates must be currently enrolled in college, pursing an associate, bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, or they must have completed such a program within the past three years. Students from any accredited college or university may apply.

If you asked three Catawba graduates, who are pursuing their dream of playing professional basketball overseas, their answers may be a bit different. Rob Fields, Donald Rutherford, and Antonio Houston are three Catawba alumni from the Class of 2010 who all played collegiate basketball for the Indians and are now playing professionally in Europe.

The Catawba College Alumni Board of Directors honored faculty and staff of the college with an appreciation reception on Tuesday, November 23 in the lobby of Hedrick Administration Building. The purpose of the reception, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, was to give thanks to employees of the college for their support of students and the campus community, as well as their commitment to student success in the classroom and in life.

After training maybe I thought I would come back and implement sweeping changes; not realistic I know, but a girl can dream. My first week back after training included proctoring mid-semester tests, which is difficult because the students cheat like crazy. On the surface it seems as if the teachers don't want the students to cheat, but there is no disciplinary plan for how to deal with it.

Christman, teaching is in his blood, and for as long as he can remember his life has revolved around the betterment of education and the many children whose lives he has touched. Christman, much to the disappointment of many, is preparing to retire from Gilbertsville Elementary School after more than 20 years of service with the school as both teacher and principal.

Recent Catawba graduate Rachel Kennedy has won an award from the Poetry Council of North Carolina. Her sonnet "Flesh" was awarded second place in the Council's annual Charles Shull Contest for Traditional Poetry. Richard Stevenson Feimster '48 (1921 to 2009). Submitted by Luther Conger and Franklin Ivey, co-chairs of the Richard S. Feimster Athletic Scholarship Fund. Soon after Coach Feimster was laid to rest, two of his student athlete pallbearers decided on the front lawn of Concord Presbyterian Church that they wanted to create a lasting honor for their coach, teacher, mentor and friend.

Catawba College's Ketner of Business will host the fourth annual Business Hall of Fame Saturday, November 6 in Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus. Four outstanding business leaders will be inducted at the event. Inductees include Paul E. Fisher of Salisbury, Richard "Dick" J. Seiwell '67 of West Chester, Pa., Jim L. Williamson '54 of Charlotte, and the late Lotan Corriher of Landis, who attended Old Catawba College in Newton from 1891 to1892.

Bill "Scotch" Shaw '75 is making his way from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Iquitos, Peru on his freighter canoe, the Lucky Suz. He began his journey on August 30, heading down the east coast of North America. He'll travel through Central America, Eastern South America, to mouths of the Amazon, then, up the Amazon River, to Iquitos.

The Catawba College Alumni Association recognized two of its own as recipients of Distinguished Alumnus Awards during Homecoming activities on October 9. Gregory M. Alcorn '79 of Salisbury and Thomas E. "Tom" Burdette '73 of Clifton, Va., received the awards during a barbecue luncheon held in Goodman Gymnasium on campus.

The Volleyball team will be collecting donations for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. We are excited to be a part of the Side-Out Foundation and Dig Pink campaign. Education is key to increasing awareness and knowledge about the disease.

Catawba College's Blue Masque Hall of Fame inductees will be honored as part of the college's Homecoming Weekend activities. This year's Blue Masque Hall of Fame induction ceremony and reception will held in Hedrick Little Theatre at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 8. Meet 2010 Catawba graduate, Shane Aldridge. While a student at Catawba, Shane Aldridge '10 of China Grove, N.C., double majored in Religion and Philosophy and Political Science with an emphasis in the American Political Experience. An internship at the Rowan County Register of Deeds Office in Salisbury led to Shane landing a part-time position there after his May graduation.

Jacqueline Cameron Leonard of Lexington, N.C., a former first lady of Catawba College and wife of the late Dr. Theodore Leonard, Catawba's 17th President, died Sept. 26. Her funeral service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at First Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington. Mrs. Leonard was a generous benefactor of Catawba College. She and her late husband established and funded several endowed scholarships and supported several of the institution's capital campaigns.

At 3:30 am my alarm sounds and a few minutes later a voice comes over the loudspeaker of the mosque three doors down: "Sahur, sahur", the voice says. "Bapak-bapak, ibu-ibu, anak-anak, sahur sahur", it continues.

Many of you are probably thinking how is Lauren going that many hours a day without food. It is not without difficulty. Thoughts of ice cream often pop into my head. Actually not drinking anything is more difficult than not eating. Note: I did not feel so great on Day 2 of fasting, but Day 3 went much better.

The Center for the Environment at Catawba College has received a $184,000 grant from the N.C. Energy Office's Student Energy Internship and Fellowship Program to launch the Catawba College Energy Corps. It was one of 23 private businesses, public agencies and public and private universities to receive a combined $5.6 million from the N.C. Energy Office for the program, which was funded with money from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The Catawba College Chiefs Club hopes to fill Shuford Stadium during home football games this fall by promoting themed game days. On different Saturdays, a different organization or segment of the local population will be targeted and offered free admission to the games. The late Eugene Deal of Mooresville, N.C., formerly of Charlotte, N.C., made a gift the year before his death to establish a scholarship at Catawba College named for him and his late wife. Deal, a 1938 alumnus of Catawba, died July 10, 2010. His wife predeceased him in 2005. The Evelyn S. and Eugene E. Deal Family Endowed Scholarship will be targeted to students who are graduates of South Rowan High School, members of First Reformed Church of Landis, N.C., and who are majoring in education.

I thought school started on Monday the 12th and my scheduling/planning/list making self was freaking out that I had not made any plans with other teachers. So I requested a meeting with my counterpart for the Friday before school started, which we had, but planned little.

For me, it was just about the same 4th of July as in America ... a four-hour Muslim religious program where I believe I was the subject of more than one conversation between the 150 or so women in attendance. An important lesson I have learned: suede ballet flats from Italy and hand-made leather sandals from Greece do not stand up to the climate and conditions of Indonesia. Shoe-lovers everywhere are devastated.

My host family laughed at me and offered something a bit more palatable to my American taste buds. My host family seems to be laughing at me quite often, which is ok because I am used to that from my actual family.

Catawba College's Chiefs Club began its 2010-2011 membership drive on June 1 with a goal of 525 members, and membership renewal information has been mailed to all 2009-2010 members. A Chiefs Club membership supports the 83 full athletic scholarships Catawba sponsors for approximately 450 student athletes playing one of its 18 NCAA Division II sports.

I am sorry for the huge lapse in emails to those who wait on baited breath and I'm also sorry to those of you who may not actually care to read them but feel obligated because I'm sending them from Indonesia. Here are some highlights from the past weeks in Malang, although I am no longer in Malang ... I'll get to that later.

Catawba College's Business Advisory Board for the Ketner School of Business has a new chair. Robert M. Van Geons, CEcD., executive director of the Salisbury–Rowan Economic Development Commission since January of 2008, succeeds Joey Popp as chair of the 30-member board.

Catawba College announced today that women's lacrosse is being added to its athletics program. The announcement was made by Dr. W. Craig Turner, president, and Dennis Davidson, director of athletics. With the addition of lacrosse, which will begin play in the 2011-12 school year, Catawba will field nine varsity women's sports.

With their sights set on their futures, 276 Catawba College graduates received their diplomas Saturday, May 15 in two separate ceremonies held in Keppel Auditorium on campus. The ceremonies marked the institution's 159th year, but marked for most of the graduates, the beginning of their professional journeys. "I'll be going to one of the top schools for education in the country and I would never have dreamed of that," said 2010 Catawba College graduate Andrea Clabaugh of York, Pa.

A college alumnus and three graduating seniors received special recognition during the commencement exercises. The 2010 O.B. Michael Award, Whitener Medals, and Barbara Andrews Award were awarded during the ceremonies. Read more...

Catawba alumnus G. Edward Hughes, president/CEO of Gateway Community and Technical College, has been elected to the board of directors of the American Association of Community Colleges for a three-year term beginning in July. "It is an honor to be elected by my peers across the country to the AACC Board," Dr. Hughes said. "This is a critical time for the AACC board, especially as we hire and begin working with a new association president.

This past Monday, my cluster taught at a different school, one in Batu rather than Malang. We were told the first class would start at 7 a.m. Unfortunately, we were not told there was a ceremony at 7 and that class would not actually start until 7:45, but that is not the important part of the story...

Nicole Durant '09 could not have predicted upon graduation that she would have success and some fun while promoting the "As Seen on TV Hat." Nicole, who is currently living in Asheville, N.C., works at a local restaurant there while pursuing her dream [of acting] in her spare time. She shared her experience in landing the job as the young woman in the "As Seen on TV hat" and her comments follow in the first-person.

Arema is the team from Malang and also the best team in the Indonesian Super League. The stadium is outside the city in an absolutely beautiful spot with a mountain rising up behind the stadium. Not a great game of soccer, but a wonderful atmosphere with constant singing and dancing from the crowd.

I never should have led with squatty potties; I just can't top squatty potties. But here are some observations from the last week: Working at KFC [Kentucky Fried Chicken] appears to be as terrible a job in Indonesia as it is in the US.

"It's not about working for the title or working for the money, it's about doing something that you want to do. Find passion in what you do," Lowe's senior vice president of specialty sales and store operations support, Robert Wagner, told those gathered at Catawba College's Ralph W. Ketner School of Business' 5th Distinguished CEO Lecture Series on April 8.

Four new members will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on May 1, during the festivities of the Hall of Fame's 32st anniversary. The inductees are (with graduation year): David Bennett of Conway, S.C.; Reid Bradshaw '67 of Salisbury; Kevin Sloan '88 of Havertown, Pa.; and Jowita Sokolowska '97 of Harelbeke, Belgium.

Catawba Alumna Lauren Ebersole '07 is headed for her next great adventure and this one will last more than two years (27 months to be exact). She is on her way to East Java, Indonesia on a Peace Corps assignment to teach English to high school students.

2008 Catawba alumnus Jonathan Rhodes is making a 10-day trip to Thailand this month with a high school friend, and 2007 alumnus Joe Brooks. A 1955 alumnus of Catawba College who is a long-serving minister in the United Church of Christ was honored February 15 as the recipient of the 2010 Catawba's Campus Ministry Church/College Award. The Reverend Dr. Thomas R. Hamilton '55 of Newton received the award in recognition of his more than five decades of service to both the Church and Catawba College at an event held in Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus.

An anonymous donor hopes to help Catawba College with a two-to-one matching challenge of up to $1,000,000 for all new, undesignated gifts. The donor's generous offer will match every undesignated dollar raised for the challenge between now and March 15 with a two-to-one match. Undesignated funds made toward the challenge and raised after March 15 and through May 31, the end of the College's fiscal year, will be matched by the donor on a one-to-one basis.

Thanks to a gift from the estate of Col. Louis "Ike" Alpheus Green '42 of Lexington, N.C., a new scholarship fund has been established at Catawba College. Preference for the Ike and Vicky Green Annual Scholarship Fund will be given to football players.

Catawba College Alumnus Scott Robinson '84 of Tappahannock, Va., has entered the race as a Democrat for his state's First Congressional District. His campaign focus is to bring accountability to federal government and he is committed to balancing the federal budget and promoting pro-growth economic policies. He is an environmental steward and an advocate for veterans, especially wounded soldiers.

The 2010 Class to be inducted on Saturday, May 1st includes Reid Bradshaw '67 (Football and former Head Coach and AD at South Rowan HS), David Bennett (Head Football Coach here 1995-2001), Kevin Sloan '88 (Soccer) and Jowita Sokolowska '97 (Women's Basketball).

Dr. Sheila Brownlow, a professor of psychology at Catawba College, and two of her former students, Jessica Davison of Springfield, Pa., and Danielle Schneider of New Castle, Del., both 2009 graduates, co-authored a paper that has been accepted for publication by the Psi Chi Journal.

Dale Wilson of Troutman, N.C., says he prefers to fly under the radar and keep a low profile. It's hard for him to do that right now since he learned in August that he was selected as the 2009 National Outstanding Disabled American Veteran of the Year.

Catawba College announced Monday, Nov. 9, that it has terminated its women’s field hockey program, effective immediately. The announcement was made by Dr. Craig Turner, College President. Turner, along with Catawba’s Vice President for Athletics Tom Childress and Athletics Director Dennis Davidson met with the current squad on Monday evening. They informed the student athletes that their athletic scholarships would be honored if they chose to remain at Catawba.

When Catawba College senior Lindsey Jackson walks across the bricks on Stanback Plaza she does so with a certain amount of pride and relief. As she walks, she can look down and read the names and messages engraved on some of those bricks like: "Catawba Rocks, Class of 1983;" "To D.A.S. Brothers, Congrats! KS '96;" "Like Mother - 1983 & Daughter - 2011;" and "Days in the Sun, HEM and HEM."

As part of their efforts to raise funds for the 6th annual Thanksgiving Duck Draw, a service project to supply Thanksgiving meals to local families in need, the Office of Student Affairs is selling Catawba College afghans, or throws. The throws are 100% cotton, woven by a company in South Carolina. The generously-sized, approximately 48" by 68" throw features the words Catawba College and the feathered "C" athletics logo.

North Hills Christian School went all out to celebrate the milestone birthday of its last remaining founder. Davis, who goes by Dave, and his family founded North Hills in 1967 with the late Roger Harrison and William Ryburn and their families. Close to 300 students, staff, parents and board members attended the party in the school's gymnasium.

The Gastonia native, whose long professional career focused on basketball, actually left his hometown to play basketball at Oak Ridge Academy. He transferred to Catawba on a basketball scholarship in 1964 where he became a football and track performer who played two seasons of basketball.

Four Catawba College alumni were recognized as recipients of Distinguished Alumnus Awards during Homecoming activities on October 3. Nancy Foster Councill '80 of Monkton, Md., Dr. Verne Lanier '62 of Durham, N.C., Dr. Arlan Mantz '62 of New London, Conn., and Barbara Marshall '72 of Cary, N.C., were honored during a barbecue luncheon held in Goodman Gymnasium on campus.

Students enrolled in Communication Arts Instructor Cyndi Wittum's Applied Journalism course have been working on stories and photographs for the new online site since the beginning of the fall semester.

18 golfers teed off at 7:30 on Monday, September 14th to play 100 holes at McCanless Golf Club to support Catawba Athletics. Included in the group were several Catawba coaches. All monies raised in the effort are spent on Catawba Student Athletes.

Four Catawba College theatre arts alumni recently participated in a reading of a stage adaptation of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying at Ragdale, an artist colony in Lake Forest, Illinois. Allison Barnes (2005), Jen Short (2009), Jordan Danz (2008), and Taylor Edwards (2007) all live in the Chicago area and work in theatre there.

Rowan County Chief Deputy Kevin Auten jokes about how long he was an undergraduate at Catawba College before earning his bachelor's degree in 2000. He'll tell you about his false starts, that college is a balance of grades, maturing and experience, and how all it takes is for you to apply yourself, but it took Kevin Auten a total of 21 years to get it exactly right for himself.

Conservation efforts are on the minds of Catawba College administrators as the institution begins a new academic year. Two recent projects on campus are indicative of the new emphasis. For years, the fountain installed on Stanback Plaza in front of the Cannon Student Center was a source of fun and pranks for students and a source of problems for the College Facilities Department.

A gray moustache, a rose bud boutonniere, a black beret and an unquenchable passion for teaching are just some of the most remembered attributes of the late Dr. David Earl Faust who served for 38 years on the faculty at Catawba College. Faust, a professor of religion and history, was also known for his memorable greeting, "There you are!" which he almost always enthused upon seeing a student, a colleague, an acquaintance or friend.

The Department of Athletics at Catawba College has announced a new 5K road race on the running calendar for local and regional runners. The race, which is for runners and walkers alike, will begin at 9 am on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Pre-registration fee is $20 (on or before 9/23) and race day registration is $25. With funds raised through the 2008 Catawba 100 Golf Marathon, the Rodger H. Lofland Weight Room has been refurbished with the purchasing of new equipment. The Lofland facility is located in Goodman Gymnasium and is used by Catawba's indoor athletic teams. Special thanks goes to Larry Kinder, a Rowan-Salisbury YMCA employee, for overseeing the project.

The Catawba College Chiefs Club hosted a reception for Catawba Chiefs members, fans and parents from Alamance, Davidson, Forsyth,Guilford and Randolph counties July 30th in Greensboro. Those in attendance were greeted by 2009-2010 Chiefs Club President Alison Klopp and then treated to the outlook for the 2009 football season from Coach Chip Hester followed by questions of him from those in attendance.

George and Blanche Greene '70 Glover of Salisbury have made a gift to establish at new scholarship at Catawba College which will benefit students from Rowan County who demonstrate financial need. The George and Blanche Glover Family Endowed Scholarship honors Blanche Greene Glover and the time she was a student at Catawba.

A reception will follow on Keppel Auditorium stage.

When Harold Bowen '48 of Lexington looks back on his life of 88 years, he has accomplished much and he credits Catawba College for setting him on his successful life's path. Now, Bowen is doing something to pay Catawba back; he has established a scholarship at the College in memory of his wife, Jean Reid Bowen '49, and twin brother, Carroll W. Bowen '46.

Renewal information and football season ticket renewal information has been mailed out to all those who were members in 2008-2009. The deadline to retain last season's football seats is Friday, July 31st. Interest is at an "all time high" as indications are that Catawba football looks to be strong this fall. He stated also "there are plenty of good seats available as of now", but anyone interested in season tickets for this fall should act quickly.

When Ron Ball '61 died very suddenly last June while on a fishing trip in Alaska, his family and friends were stunned. The grief and emptiness felt is slowly giving way to wonderful memories and a celebration of Ron's life. Those who knew him best remembered him for his ties to Catawba College and made gifts to the college in his memory. There were so many memorials, in fact, that an endowed scholarship was established at Catawba in Ron's memory.

Catawba College Alumnus Patrick L. McCrory '78, the current mayor of the City of Charlotte, and three graduating seniors, Jill Archambault of Glens Falls, N.Y.; Jared Kenish of Glassboro, N.J.; and Richard Kolbasowski, Jr., of Rockwell, N.C.; received special recognition during the College's May 9th Commencement Exercises.

Three Catawba College graduates were recognized during Commencement Exercises on campus for academic excellence. Two were honored as the Whitener Award recipients during the 10 a.m. ceremony, while one student was honored as the Barbara Andrews Award recipient during the 2 p.m.

A long-serving member of the Catawba College Board of Trustees, who is both an alumnus and a retired United Church of Christ minister, was honored Thursday, April 16th with the institution's Campus Ministry Church/College Award.

Six new members will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on May 2, during the festivities of the Hall of Fame's 31st anniversary. The inductees are (with graduation year): Henry C. Bernhardt '50; Randy Brown '89; Todd Lipe '91; Marvin Moore '99; Tom Sexton '79; and Selena Wilkes Tory '96.

FAMILY, FRIENDS, FUN! Congratulations to Alumna Teresa Brady Thomas '83, whose Catawba Story entitled "Famly, Friends, Fun!" was the winning entry for the Catawba Stories contest. In the story, which fell under the "Family Ties" category, Thomas reflects on the bond she shares with her daughter that will never be broken, the Catawba Experience.

Colan '03 and Courtney Blum Potemra '06 of Raleigh both just graduated from Catawba College within the past six years, however, they have already begun to give back to their alma mater in earnest. The couple recently made a gift to create a new endowed scholarship fund at the college and is encouraging their fellow alumni to consider doing the same.

There was a network television actress, a State Bureau of Investigation chemist, a university golf coach, a foreign language teacher and even a dancer from a cruise ship among alumni visiting Catawba College's campus on April 2nd. The occasion was Career Exploration Day, a new event hosted by the Offices of Alumni Relations and Career Services.

Robert L. Cook, Jr. and Sara Dubose Cook, a Salisbury couple known for their quiet and consistent philanthropy and for their community advocacy on a variety of issues, were honored by Catawba College Sunday, April 5th. The two were the recipients of the institution's prestigious Adrian L. Shuford, Jr. Award for Distinguished Service.

Dr. Clyde Young, an alumnus the Class of 1943 at Catawba, is a retired Salisbury dentist. Young was also a musician in the MusicMakers Orchestra. Young frequents the student section at Salisbury High School and leads the cheers on his trumpet. Young graduated almost 70 years ago.

Jeremy Aggers is a man with an acoustic guitar: a formula contemporary music shows no sign of exhausting. The "What it Comes Down To" EP, his first commercial release and the first installment in a three-record deal with Atlanta-based Brash records, does not add anything new to the vocabulary of pop music, but an album does not need break down walls to be worth hearing. Aggers' flair for lyrical storytelling and often vivid imagery keeps him afloat at his best...

Our annual Blue-White Weekend is scheduled for Friday night, April 3rd and Saturday, April 4th, 2009. The weekend starts with Corey Fischer and his most capable Chartwells Food Service staff. I thought it to be a cheap way to introduce a piece, a cop-out for an inability to find a creative introduction. Maybe I felt that way because I had never been in a situation where I felt overcome by emotion. A moment so singularly powerful that words can't even begin to describe what you were feeling. I think I experienced that moment on January 20, 2009.

One of Catawba College's most successful music graduates will return to his alma mater for a special performance this coming Monday evening, Dec. 8, as Dennis Reed brings with him the acclaimed gospel choir he founded and directs, God's Appointed People (GAP). Reed and GAP are quickly becoming a significant force in the world of gospel music, and Catawba proudly celebrates their success with this special public event.

"I'm telling you, I really go deep with Catawba," says Randy Southard of Stokesdale, a 1974 College alumnus, and as he explains, one realizes how truthful his statement is. Southard describes himself as "just a little wet behind the ears kid from Stokesdale" who ended up as a student at Catawba thanks to two people with ties to the institution, both of whom were named Ron.

Rashad Smith of Salisbury, Associate Dean of Admissions at Catawba College, was recently inducted into the East Rutherford High School Hall of Fame. Smith, a 1996 graduate of East Rutherford High, participated in football and track and field there.

Saturday, November 1st featured a volleyball match against Brevard in Goodman Gymnasium. Following the match, all convened for dinner in Kirkland Lobby of Goodman Gymnasium. A program after dinner featured some of our former players that returned and attendees got their first chance to hear from our new President, Dr. Craig Turner.

1978 Catawba College Alumnus Pat McCrory of Charlotte returned to his alma mater by helicopter on Saturday, Nov. 1st. The occasion was a Salisbury campaign stop for McCrory, the North Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidate, who is hoping to secure a win in the Nov. 4th Election.

Tom E. Smith of Salisbury, who has served for the past 11 years as chairman of the Catawba College Board of Trustees, turned the reins over to Paul Fisher of Salisbury at the Board's semi-annual meeting held October 20-21 at the college.

Three Catawba College alumni were honored as recipients of the College's Distinguished Alumnus Award during a barbecue luncheon held Saturday, October 18th in the Goodman Gymnasium of the Abernethy Physical Education Center before the football game against Tusculum College.

The late Ruby Miller Sanchez of Chicago, Illinois, formerly of Spencer, N.C., was a 1947 alumnus of Catawba College. Through a gift from his estate, her husband, the late Jose R. Sanchez, memorialized her at the institution by establishing the Ruby Miller Sanchez Endowed Scholarship. Monies from his estate also funded the purchase of choir robes and the costs of an annual choir tour at Catawba.

Students majoring in religious studies at Catawba College will benefit from a new scholarship, the Raffaelli Family Foundation Scholarship that has recently been established.

Mr. Ralph W. Ketner, a Catawba College trustee and chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of Food Lion, Inc., recently visited the new N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis. 2008 Catawba College alumnus Ryan Dayvault, an employee at UNC Chapel Hill’s core lab at the N.C. Research Campus, took Mr. Ketner on a tour of the facility.

Albert H. "Tuck" Gudger, Sr., a 1948 alumnus of Catawba College, says a new scholarship he has established at the institution is just another way he is "giving back." Preference for the Albert H. "Tuck" Gudger, Sr. Scholarship will be given to a wide receiver on the football team, a position that Gudger once held.

19 golfers played 100 holes on Monday, September 15th at McCanless Golf Club to raise money in support of Catawba's athletic program. With gifts and pledges as of the playing date, over $36,000 has been raised as it was once again a rousing success and thanks go out to all Catawba Alumni, Parents and Friends that have supported the 100.

Martha Caulder talks fast, walks fast and likes to stay busy. You'll probably notice her start to fidget if you ask her to sit still too long. That's good, because she's taking on a lot in her new job as principal at Andrews Elementary School. But she's not new to administration: Caulder has been an assistant principal at four elementary schools.

The late Daniel H. Elkins, Jr. never attended Catawba College, but his two sons did, both graduating from the institution. Daniel Elkins, however, was a great advocate for the institution. According to son Gary Elkins '75 of Winston-Salem, Daniel Elkins believed Catawba College embodied everything a college should be – a beautiful campus, gracious and friendly people, and graduates who made fine employees.

Alumna Emily McGaughy '05 of Berkeley, Calif., who majored in religion and philosophy at Catawba, has earned her Master of Divinity degree from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. At May commencement exercises for the Pacific School of Religion, Emily was one of three students presented with special awards.

Gifts from the estates of the late Henry Wilson Tysinger, Jr., and his wife, Helen Bost Tysinger, have been designated for the establishment of a new scholarship at Catawba College, memorializing Mr. Tysinger's late sister, Catherine Victoria Tysinger, a Catawba College alumna of the class of 1937.

Two Catawba College Alumni from the class of 2008, Jon Rhodes of Virginia Beach, Va. and Aileen Thomson of Burlington, Vt., have accepted positions in South Korea working as English teachers (English as a second language) at private language school operated by Reading Town. The school is located in Jeonju (2 hours south of Seoul). The two begin work July 21 under a one-year contract at the institution.

U.S. diplomat William Lacy Swing, a former U.N. envoy to Congo, won a two-thirds majority of votes from the member countries of the International Organization for Migration for a five-year term to be its director. The 125-nation agency, which has an annual budget of nearly $800 million, has been run by an American since 1969, and has long been viewed as a U.S.-dominated body.

2008-09 Membership information and Football season ticket renewals are being mailed to all 2007-08 Chiefs Club members the week of June 2nd. Chiefs Club President Eric Slipp has set a goal of 525 members which is up from a record membership of 516 in 2007-08.

On May 10, 2008, 286 members of Catawba's Class of 2008 crossed the stage and received their diplomas. The college awarded master's degrees in education, bachelor of arts degrees, bachelor of business administration degrees, bachelor of fine arts degrees and bachelor of science degrees in two separate ceremonies in Keppel Auditorium.

When the Carolina RailHawks women take the field on Friday, June 6th against the Bradenton Athletics at Wakemed Soccer park at 7:30 p.m., there will be four new players on the roster. Head Coach Jay Howell has added Nicole Danford, Ashley Gregory, Kim Crowley and McKenzie Burman to the official roster. Students, faculty, staff and alumni associated with Catawba College's Ketner School of Business will take a "Business in China" tour May 19-June 1. The tour, coordinated by Associate Professor of Marketing, Dr. Jack Green, is offered through EF Education Tours and includes visits to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

37 Catawba College Sports Hall of Famers returned to campus for the 31st annual Hall of Fame festivities April 25th and 26th. 72 golfers enjoyed perfect weather and a cookout on the 25th and a crowd over 140 watched as Ginger Hamric, Herman Helms' 48 (d), Charlie Little' 64, Joe Popp' 52, Tracey Scruggs' 90, and Ralph Wager became the latest inductees into the Hall on April 26th.

Philip George "Pine" Cooper loves Catawba College and his wife of 49 years, Hattie, has grown to love it too. The couple has transferred their affection for the College into a new endowed scholarship which will assist deserving students from North Carolina or Virginia with the cost of tuition. The scholarship is established in memory of Pine's mother and father, Lillian Arena George Cooper, a member of Catawba's Class of 1907, and Benjamin Herbert Cooper.

Catawba College Alumnus Andrew "Drew" Allvine '93 and his wife Blake Burton of Atlanta have established a new scholarship at the institution through a deferred gift of a life insurance policy. The Andrew Earl and Blake Burton Allvine Scholarship was established through Catawba's Tower Society.

Catawba College Alumnus Harper Holland '78, wife Michele, and their 10-year-old son, Christopher of Lake Mary, Fla., have established a new scholarship at the college in honor of Holland's parents. Preference for the Clyde and Daphne Holland Endowed Scholarship will be given to students from Sampson County High School and preferably from Lakewood High School.

Dan and Joanne Frock of Hanover, Pennsylvania, did not attend Catawba College, but their three children did, and all three graduated from the institution. In honor of their children, the Frocks have established a new endowed scholarship at Catawba to assist deserving students.

Two longtime members of the Catawba College Board of Trustees, both elected to their trustee posts by the Southern Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, were honored Sunday, Feb. 17. Wade H. "Hamp" Shuford, Jr. of Hickory and Claude Shuford Abernethy, Jr. of Newton were presented with Catawba's inaugural Campus Ministry Church/College Award at a dinner held in Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus.

Dr. Bruce Griffith, a beloved and longtime Catawba College History Professor, died Tuesday, February 12, at his home. A 1962 alumnus of Catawba, Dr. Griffith joined the faculty at his alma mater in 1964 after earning both his master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees from UNC Chapel Hill. At the time of his death, he shared the distinction of being senior faculty member at the college...

Bridgette Edwards Gibbs of Salisbury, a 2002 Catawba College alumna and director of event planning at the college, completed a certification in Meeting and Event Planning during the fall 2007 semester at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Lauren Ebersole of Hagerstown, Md., a 2007 Catawba College graduate who majored in Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations, is spending several months this spring in Ghana. She is working at a school in Abura, a small town about 10 minutes from Cape Coast along the southern coast of Ghana.

Alumnus Richard "Rick" B. Toms '74 of Hagerstown, Md., hopes the new scholarship he and his wife, Cinda, have established at Catawba College will change a student's life. He says the scholarship he received that enabled him to attend Catawba and play football changed his.

2007 Catawba College alumnus Joey Yow, who majored in theatre arts, has landed a job working in make-up with Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas, Nevada. He begins his new position in January.

Douglas A. Stanley of Salisbury, a 2004 alumnus of Catawba College, was recently promoted to a programmer/analyst position in Catawba's Computer Services Department. Stanley also recently earned a master's degree in information technology and management from UNC Greensboro.

If you had told Catawba College Alumnus Adrian Parker '99 that he would be working in NASCAR after he graduated from college, he likely wouldn't have believed you. But now he is a believer, having just wrapped up his fifth year in the business, the last two of which he has spent as the account manager for the Concord, North Carolina-based Roush Fenway Racing's #17 DEWALT Ford driven by Matt Kenseth.

When she came to Catawba, Amy Jordan '95, a student from Baltimore, Md., loved musical theatre and dance. But after she took just one psychology class on campus during her freshman year, she developed yet another fascination and interest.

The family of Robert "Bob" Miller III, a 1955 alumnus of Catawba College, has established a scholarship at the institution in his memory. Preference for the Robert B. Miller III Endowed Scholarship will be given to eligible members of the College's men's basketball team. This scholarship is being established by his wife, Tippie Miller, his son, Robert J. "Bobby" Miller, a 1985 Wake Forest University graduate, and his daughter, Sharon Miller Earnhardt, a 1987 graduate of Catawba College.

The goal of the Alumni Retreat is to promote the search for a meaningful, fulfilling vocation for all Catawba College Alumni. This Retreat will be held for all Alumni and spouses May 30th, 31st, and June 1st 2008. The retreat will cost $50 each for alumni and spouses who graduated before the year 2000, and $20 each for alumni and spouses who graduated between 2000-2008.

Just over 40 former cheerleaders returned to Catawba November 9th and 10th for a reunion. Friday evening, November 9th, featured a reception and dinner as well as several reminiscing of their time as a cheerleader and what an important role it played in their lives as students here. On Saturday they were recognized in front of a large home crowd at halftime of the 45-0 victory over arch-rival Lenoir-Rhyne. A gallery of photos follows.

She was surprised to learn that the faculty meeting was called to announce she had been selected as Lincoln County's Teacher of the Year. 2006 Catawba College alumnus Dennis Reed of Charlotte will give his initial sermon on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. at New St. John Baptist Church. While at Catawba, Reed was the first place winner of the BMI Foundation's 9th Annual John Lennon Scholarship Awards in 2006. In 2007, Reed was a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC).

Catawba College alumnus and owner of The Burdette Smith Group P.C., a CPA firm in Fairfax, Va., Thomas Burdette '73 will speak on "Quarterbacking Your Firm" Thursday, October 18 on the Catawba campus. Catawba College Alumna Kim Butler '02 of Charlotte, a native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and her colleague, Kimberly Shive of Charlotte, a native of Greenville, N.C., will perform in a voice recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23 in Tom Smith Auditorium on the Catawba campus.

James Doyle McDuffie '50 of Charlotte and wife Darlene Sears McDuffie have established a scholarship at Catawba College which bears their names. Preference for the scholarship will be given to students from Rowan, Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties.

School officials named new principals for Knollwood Elementary and Southeast Middle Schools Tuesday, filling the last two principal vacancies in the system. Louis Edward "Skip" Kraft will move up to take Jamie Durant's place at Southeast Middle. He earned his bachelor's degree in special education and adaptive physical education in 1983. Kraft also finished his master's degree in school administration in 2006 at UNC-Charlotte.

The Fourth Annual Brenna Lee Lawrence Spreading Wings Scholarship Benefit was held July 14, 2007 in Jamestown, N.C. Over 100 people were in attendance at the dinner and silent auction which raised funds to be added to the Brenna Lee Lawrence Endowed Scholarship which was established in 2006 by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Brent Lawrence, as a means of memorializing Brenna and assisting deserving Catawba students.

Jack Ward, a 1951 graduate of Catawba College from Mocksville, is hopeful that a new scholarship established in his name at the institution will give other young people that same opportunity to attend Catawba and be mentored by someone like legendary football Coach Gordon Kirkland. Preference for the Jack Ward Endowed Scholarship will be given to a student from Davie County or Thomasville High School with an interest in majoring in education with aspirations to work in school administration.

The Government of the United States is pleased to nominate Ambassador William Lacy Swing for the position of Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). IOM member states will elect a new Director General in June 2008 for a five-year term.

All former Catawba Women Basketball players should set aside the weekend of February 15th and 16th, 2008 for a reunion. The Delta Drift made a rare hometown appearance June 9 at Las Palmas. The band's heavy touring schedule has been taking them everywhere but close by as they've been traveling throughout the Southeast and up to Cincinnati, performing and promoting their new CD, "Desolate City." Catawba College Alumnus Ray Oxendine '61 of Maxton has established a scholarship at Catawba College which will keep the Oxendine family name alive at the institution for perpetuity. Two Catawba College Trustees were honored Wednesday, May 16 at Catawba College as the recipients of the prestigious Adrian L. Shuford, Jr. Award for Distinguished Service. Presentations to Claude B. Hampton, Jr. of Salisbury and James L. Williamson of Charlotte were made during the College's annual President's Circle Dinner, held to recognize the institution's major donors, in the Cannon Student Center.

Argus Insurance, a wholly owned subsidiary of High Point Bank and Trust Company, has hired Miles Gurley as a Commercial Insurance Producer in the High Point office. High Point Bank acquired Argus Insurance in December 2006.

Catawba College Alumnus Mike Hutchens '70 says that he established the new scholarship at his alma mater because he "wanted to leave something with my name on it that would make a difference in the life of a student with financial need." As a student, Hutchens took out loans to help pay his way through Catawba and a scholarship such as the one he has established "would have certainly helped." He recalls that when he enrolled as a freshman in 1966, the tuition, room and board at the institution,

" Catawba College rising senior Emily Wonderly of Hicksville, Ohio said after she toured one of the five new residence halls now under construction on campus. Wonderly was one of dozens of students on campus who took advantage of a brief, two-hour open house organized in one of the two B-building residence halls by Catawba College Facilities Director Henry Haywood.

Catawba College freshman, Katherine "Katy" Hill, of Fayetteville spoke on behalf of her fellow First Family Scholars when they gathered for an annual luncheon with their donors on April 12 in Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus. She said it was a First Family Scholarship that brought her to Catawba and that due to the overwhelming generosity of the donors, she and her fellow scholars have "the chance to experience a fulfilling and exciting college career."

Four graduates will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on April 28, during the festivities of the Hall of Fame's 30th anniversary. Betsy Rich of Salisbury is paying tribute to the kind, loving and resilient spirits of her late husband and son through a new scholarship she has established at Catawba College. The Maynard L. and Paul L. Rich First Family Scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need, who feels called to the helping professions (education, psychology, religion/philosophy and pre-med), and who demonstrates a caring spirit and a sense of high moral values.

Catawba College is creating new Academy for Teaching which will be named in honor of former teacher education faculty member and College trustee Shirley Peeler Ritchie of Salisbury. College trustees learned of a donor gift to underwrite the start-up of the Academy and new Teaching Scholarships offered through it and also approved plans for the academy and its naming at their February meeting.

Twenty-eight Catawba College students, all recipients of Tom Smith Scholarships at the institution, were honored at a March 2 luncheon held in the Hurley Room of the Cannon Student Center.

Several individuals were recognized and several appointments announced at Catawba College's annual Board of Trustees Meeting held Feb. 19 and 20 on campus.

Members of the Catawba College Class of 1961 wanted a special and enduring way to honor longtime College employee and 1944 alumna Nina Louise Tucker of Salisbury. They pooled their resources and established the Louise Tucker Endowed Scholarship at the institution in honor of their beloved "L.T."

Seventy-one former Catawba College basketball players returned to campus February 9 and 10, 2007 for a reunion. The weekend began with a Friday evening reception in the Meyer Auxiliary Gymnasium that gave all a chance to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Saturday featured lunch and several former players speaking to the group; their remarks evoked both laughter along with some tears as the gathering proved an emotional time for those attending.

Dr. Michael Baranski, a Catawba College professor of biology, was recently honored with the 2007 Conservation Communicator Award by North Carolina's Hugh Hammond Bennett Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS). The award was presented January 13 at the society's annual awards banquet held in Raleigh.

A scholarship was recently established in memory of Simone Grant Timoney, a 1983 graduate of Catawba College. Simone's aunt, Sylvia Wiseman of Salisbury, gave the initial gift to establish the Simone Grant Timoney Endowed Scholarship. Simone received a Bachelor of Arts degree, majored in theatre arts and speech, and frequently appeared on Hedrick Little Theatre stage.

Catawba College's information technology department has been permanently relocated to refurbished space on the lower level of Hoke Hall, and the staff and resources of the Corriher-Linn-Black Library have made a temporary year-long move from the library proper to the main floor of Hoke Hall. Meanwhile, across the campus from Hoke Hall, the most visible of the on-campus capital improvement projects, the construction of five new residence halls, proceeds at a steady pace.

A new academic scholarship has been established at Catawba College by a Greensboro couple who are graduates of the institution. The Kelly-Cline Family Endowed Scholarship was funded with a gift from Ned and Linda Kelly Cline of Greensboro, members of the Class of 1964. Preference for the scholarship will be given to North Carolina students majoring in the humanities, with additional preference given to political science, English and history majors who demonstrate financial need.

SALISBURY, N.C. – For the nineteenth consecutive year, the Catawba College Department of Music presented its annual Christmas Choral Concert, A Service of Lessons and Carols, Tuesday and Thursday, December 5 and December 7, in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus.

Mary Omwake Dearborn, beloved former first lady of Catawba College, died December 6 after a short period of declining health. Mrs. Dearborn, 95, was the daughter of Catawba's 13th president, Dr. Howard R. Omwake (1931-42) and the wife of Catawba's 15th president, Dr. Donald Dearborn (1963-1967).

Thanks to the efforts of three Catawba College alumni, the College's athletic training program now has a customized golf cart which will be used for transporting injured athletes. All three alumni are associated RoMedical Care, Inc. and its affiliates – Comadoll, Watts & Ellison Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, and Proformance Physical Therapy.

Chiefs Club President Dave VanAken reports that Chiefs membership is at 462 members as of November 28, 2006 and that represents an all time high. Last year's membership totaled 449 and this year's 462 surpasses the goal of 460. President VanAken said "now we have our sights set at 500 members and it can be done."

For the nineteenth consecutive year, the Catawba College Department of Music will present its annual Christmas Choral Concert, A Service of Lessons and Carols, Tuesday and Thursday, December 5 and December 7, in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus.

Following a symbolic groundbreaking for Abernethy Village held September 19, and the demolition one month later of the circa-1966 Abernethy Residence Hall, all is on schedule and going according to plan with the construction of five new residence halls on campus. That according to Catawba College’s Director of Facilities Henry Haywood who said those residence halls will be ready to use by the beginning of ’07-’08 academic year.

Three Catawba College alumni were honored as recipients of the College's Distinguished Alumnus Award during a barbecue luncheon held Saturday, Nov. 4 in the Goodman Gymnasium of the Abernethy Physical Education Center before the football game against Presbyterian College.

Dr. Frank "Dutch" Meyer, a retired wrestling coach and professor in Catawba College’s physical education department, held court on Saturday, Nov. 4, Catawba’s Homecoming. More than a hundred of his former students, colleagues and friends lined up to greet him before the start of a 10:30 a.m. ceremony which dedicated the Auxiliary Gymnasium of the Abernethy Physical Education Center to him.

Alma Wagoner Leinbach '43 of Newton says it was almost predetermined that she would attend Catawba College. To ensure that other students have the same opportunity that she, and other members of her family, did, Mrs. Leinbach has established a scholarship at the institution. Preference for the Roy E. and Alma W. Leinbach Endowed Scholarship Fund will be given to able and deserving pre-ministerial students or students from Catawba County who demonstrate need.

Alumni, a retired professor and coach, and numerous former recipients of the institution's prestigious Whitener Awards will be recognized and honored during Catawba College Homecoming festivities slated Nov. 3-5. Several sporting events, including an alumni golf tournament, an alumni lacrosse game, a blue and white men's basketball game, and a home football game, along with an alumni block party are also scheduled.

His fellow Catawba College Trustees surprised Charlotte Mayor and College Alumnus Pat McCrory '78 on his birthday, Tuesday, October 17th. McCrory's 50th birthday coincided with the semi-annual meeting of the Board of Trustees and a decorated cake and balloons marked the occasion.

Catawba College trustees, administrators, gathered with family and friends of the late Enoch Goodman Monday, October 16, to pay tribute to the man who served for more than 50 years on the board of trustees and who through his many financial contributions to the college earned the distinction of being the most generous alumni donor in its history.

While students, faculty and staff of Catawba College looked on, Abernethy Hall began to come down on the overcast morning of Thursday, October 19. The Knoxville, Tennessee-based E. Luke Green, an environmentally sensitive demolition company, used a track hoe to claw away and push on the walls of the building, gradually destroying portions of it.

Nearly seventy Catawba College Men's and Women's soccer alumni returned to campus this weekend for their reunion. Former players and coaches returned for a luncheon and then watched Coach Craig Turnbull's men notch his 100th career win by toppling West Virginia Wesleyan 4-2 and, in the nightcap, John Cullen's women scored a late goal to defeat SAC conference foe Mars Hill 3-2.

Catawba College Alumnus Kevin Carlton '85 and wife Wendy of Salisbury have established a scholarship fund at the College in honor of Kevin's parents, Dr. C. Robert and Elizabeth Carlton, both of whom are retired Catawba faculty members. The scholarship will be awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and are pursuing education majors in the fields of mathematics, computer science or music.

Although the 40-year-old Abernethy Hall on Catawba College's campus soon will be demolished to make way for five new residence halls, the new halls will be named Abernethy Village as a tribute and memorial to the Abernethy family. College President Dr. Robert Knott made that announcement Tuesday, Sept. 19, during a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Catawba College trustees, including Claude and Shuford Abernethy.

A pinch of humor, a measure of firm honesty and a healthy dollop of integrity—those are the essential ingredients that yielded a lifetime of success for Mary Emma Knox at Catawba College. Knox, a 1940 graduate, returned to her alma mater in 1942 after two years as a teacher in the public schools of Whitakers, N.C. She then dedicated her impressive career of 42 years to the betterment of the College and its many constituents.

Thanks to the Blanche & Julian Robertson Family Foundation, Inc. of Salisbury, Catawba College will receive a $1 million grant, payable over five years, for use in the College's capital improvement program. Catawba's grant headed the list of 63 others with a value of $1,271,663 approved during the Foundation's spring 2006 grant cycle.

Jo Patterson Coble '52 of Concord and her children, Carolyn Coble Cline '75, Ann Coble Shaughnessy '78, and John "Wally" Coble, have established a scholarship at Catawba College to pay tribute to the memory of Coble's parents. The J. Lewis and Blanche B. Patterson Endowed Scholarship will be given to students with financial need who are residents of Cabarrus County.

Four members of the Catawba College Board of Trustees were recognized by their peers during the annual Trustees Retreat May 19 in Blowing Rock. Three of these individuals have stepped down from active service on that Board were recognized by a unanimous vote of the Board as trustees emeriti, while a fourth who resigned his membership on the Board and was presented a resolution of appreciation.

Rising seniors majoring in business administration at Catawba College will be eligible for a new scholarship established by William E. '53 and Virginia Samuels of West End, N.C. The William E. and Virginia Samuels Endowed Scholarship will both recognize and provide financial assistance for a rising senior business major who both demonstrates leadership ability and was on Catawba’s Dean’s List during his or her junior year.

Lentz (1956) of Kannapolis; Amy Price-Peters (1994) of Canton, Ga.; Robert C. Rathbun (1976) of Dunwoody, Ga.; and Clyde L. Walker (1951), deceased, formerly of Charlotte.

A large group of student scholarship recipients and scholarship donors or donor representatives attended Catawba College’s annual Endowed Scholarship Luncheon Thursday, April 26, 2006 in Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus. The event was an opportunity for the two constituencies to meet each other and share their mutual interests in the College.

Dwight L. Hedrick Sr. of Lexington never went to college, but his hard work and sacrifices ensured that his three children had that opportunity. As a way to pay tribute to his father, Dwight Hedrick Jr. '64 and wife Kathleen, also of Lexington, have established the Dwight L. Hedrick Sr. Endowed Scholarship at Catawba College. This scholarship will be available to any deserving student who demonstrates financial need.

Catawba College's Senior Vice President Tom Childress will be inducted into the Greater Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame during an outdoor ceremony slated for 3 p.m. Sunday, April 9 at the Blackmon Amphitheater in downtown Mount Airy.

A total of 46 members of Catawba College Tower Society were honored Thursday, March 23 with a luncheon in the Hurley Room of the Cannon Student Center on campus. Established by Catawba in 1997, the Tower Society recognizes and honors the generosity of all alumni and friends who have made a planned giving agreement with the college or who have provided for Catawba in their estate plans.

Catawba College Alumnus and Trustee Phil Kirk has accepted a position at his alma mater as Vice President of External Relations. According to College President Dr. Robert Knott, Kirk's appointment becomes effective July 1.

Catawba College seniors set to graduate in May got some coaching for life after college thanks to a new program on campus. "Life-skills 101: Navigating Life after College" was a four-part personal development series offered jointly by the Offices of Alumni Relations and Career Services.

Ninety-eight year old Julia Albright Freeland Slate of Salisbury is a pretty woman with bright blue eyes, carefully coiffed hair, fashionable clothing put together with aplomb and a ready smile. In 1929 when this Spencer native graduated from Catawba College, she was likely considered a real knock-out.

Leland R. '64 and Bonnie P. Moore of Southern Pines have made a gift to establish a new scholarship at Catawba College. The Leland R. and Bonnie P. Moore Scholarship will provide financial assistance to a need based student athlete who demonstrates scholastic and athletic ability, along with dedication to team and school.

Leo '34 and Virginia Wallace '37 of Salisbury have established a second scholarship fund at their alma mater, Catawba College. The two are and have been models of both commercial leadership and civic responsibility in Salisbury for many decades.

Catawba College Alumnus Grady Shoe '49 and his wife, Frances, of Mooresville have provided a $100,000 gift to establish an endowed scholarship and an endowment for the College's annual Orientation Program.

Having a destroyed home and a family to manage, the following was sent to us by Catawba College graduate Amy Douglas Gay '98 of Cameron Parish, LA. Her home is 20 miles north of Creole, south of Lake Charles. With husband Paul, they are the parents to Gabrielle (Gabby), 3 years old and Katherine (Wren) 5 months old.

Salisbury native and Catawba College Alumnus Murray Burke '54 and wife Linda, of Woodstock, Ga., have established an endowed scholarship at the College in memory of his parents. Preference for the Esther Camp and Pete Burke Endowed Scholarship will go to day students from Rowan County.

Catawba College Trustees in town for their semi-annual meeting, along with donors, friends, students, faculty and staff members gathered in the Omwake Dearborn Chapel Monday, October 17 to mark the establishment of the Porter and Maria Seiwell Endowment for Campus Ministry. The establishment of the $1 million endowment fund was a very significant way for two couples long associated with the College to both honor and remember their roots.

The Catawba College Board of Trustees authorized college administrators to refine a targeted master plan for the campus and to appeal a recent NCAA ruling against the use of the term “Catawba Indians” by the institution's athletic teams. These actions were based on unanimous votes by the trustees at their semi-annual meeting held October 18 on campus.

Four graduates of Catawba College were recognized as Distinguished Alumni Saturday, Oct. 15 during the College’s Homecoming Weekend activities. Their award presentations were made during a noon barbecue luncheon for alumni held in the Goodman Gymnasium prior to the College’s football game against Newberry College.

Dick Smith ’56 of Salisbury still remembers the football scholarship he received in 1952 that enabled him to attend Catawba College. That scholarship, and the education it allowed him to obtain, helped shape his life, he says.

Two Catawba College alumni from the class of 2005, Jennifer Reiff and Jason Rigney, will be performing with their band, Labeling Deloris, Saturday, October 14, at Salisbury’s new music venue, 315. Along with Reiff and Rigney, Jason’s brother, Brad, fills the bass spot and Andrew Boudouris, also a former Catawba student, handles percussion.

Catawba College Alumna Eva Keen of Linwood was just a small town gal who had never traveled widely until she started catching flights to rendezvous with Thomas the Tank Engine at far-flung places around the United States. And, she’ll readily admit that she’d never heard of Sir Topham Hatt nor Percy until last year when she landed a week-end job working with an event at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer.

Catawba College honors students enrolled in a class entitled “Origins: Humans, Races, and Racism,” will cap their classroom experiences with a trip to South Africa in late December. Members of the Salisbury-Rowan community, alumni and friends of the College are invited to join them as they visit that country to examine how biological and sociological forces contribute to notions of race and to the perpetuation of racism.

Nine new members have been added to the Catawba College Alumni Association Board of Directors. They include Avery Bordeaux ’61 of Raleigh, Jill Ridenhour Chalmers ’85 of Salisbury, Chuck Farthing ’75 of Harrisonburg, Va., John Gust ’02 of Falls Church, Va., Jerry Hancock ’03 Clinton, S.C., Tony Klubert ’86 of Hickory, Tameka Lundy ’02 of Temple Hills, Md., Jane Smith-Steinberg ’66 of Salisbury, and Phil Stillman ’86 of Matthews.

Gene Fuller '52 of Charlotte shrugs off a recent gift he and wife Jane made to fund both a new kinesiology lab and classroom furniture at his alma mater, Catawba College. He simply says, “They needed money and I was able to help.” But the reason for Fuller’s gift is likely a little more complex than that.

Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of Catawba College have pooled their culinary resources into a new cookbook, “Catawba Cooks.” And now, this collection of 311 favorite recipes is available for purchase in Catawba’s bookstore on campus, with proceeds to benefit on and off-campus service and charitable organizations.

Mark Frantz and wife Megan of Arlington, Va. thought a perfect way to celebrate their own first-year wedding anniversary on May 8, 2005 would be to establish a scholarship at Catawba College in honor of Mark’s parents. So, now, there is the Jack and Shirley Frantz Endowed Scholarship, a tribute to both, but especially meaningful to Jack who is a member of Catawba’s class of 1964.

The leadership team of The Catawba Chiefs Club is in place for the 2005-2006 year. It includes President Melanie Bowles of Salisbury and Vice President Dave VanAken ’89 of Charlotte. W. Summersett “Summie” Carter of Salisbury is the immediate past president for the Chiefs Club.

What a success! The first reunion of former Catawba choir participants brought much excitement to the campus. Sixty-five individuals pledged to sing again with outstanding former music directors Dr. Lonny Bond, Dr. Robert Weaver, Mr. Gil Pirovano and current director, Professor Rosemary Kindard.

The family of late Catawba College Alumna Brenna Lawrence ’02 will host a scholarship benefit July 16 at the home of her parents in Jamestown. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this second annual benefit will go toward establishing the Brenna Lawrence Endowed Scholarship at Catawba.

For Catawba College Alumnus Ron Maccaroni ’67 of Fairfax County, Virginia, establishing a second endowed scholarship at his alma mater is simply a way to say “thanks” for everything the institution has done for him. Catawba College, Maccaroni contends, well-prepared him for meaningful personal and professional life.

Catawba College Alumni Tom and Mary Jo Dennard of Charlotte have made a gift of $50,000 to help endow the Campus Ministry Chair. The couple’s gift is part of the $500,000 raised to date for this purpose. Tom, a 1977 alumnus, and Mary Jo, a 1975 alumna, also serve on the advisory committee for the Campus Ministry Chair Endowment effort and Tom is a member of Catawba’s Board of Visitors. “This early lead gift to endow the Campus Ministry Chair will serve as an inspiration to many,” said Catawba C

All former Catawba College choir members are invited to participate in a very special Choir Alumni Reunion July 8 and 9 on campus! Choir alumni are invited to bring their families and return for a weekend of music making. Events get underway Friday, July 8, with check in slated at the Williams Music Building on campus between 4 and 6 p.m. A Presidential Welcome Reception follows between 7 and 9 p.m. at the home of College President and First Lady, Robert and Brenda Knott.

The Catawba Chiefs launched their 2005-2006 membership campaign June 1. The goal for this year is 425 members, according to Bill Pieczynski, Chiefs Club coordinator. “The Chiefs Club memberships support Catawba College’s intercollegiate competition,” Pieczynski said. “Without the active participation of our Chiefs Club members, competitive sports for both our male and female athletes wouldn’t be at the levels they are today. At their annual retreat, Catawba College Trustees unanimously authorized the official launch of a $35 million campaign to raise funds to bolster the College’s endowment. This move is the latest in a string of efforts under way to reposition Catawba as a “more selective” institution.

To mark her ninetieth birthday, Rachel Smith Walker’s three sons did something special; they established an endowed scholarship in her honor at her alma mater, Catawba College. The scholarship will be awarded annually to an academically gifted student who is among the most need-based student applicants.

Four former student athletes will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on April 2, during the HOF’s 28th annual festivities. The inductees are (with graduation year): James Brown (1974) of Spencer; Angela (Harbour) Mayfield (1993) of Dobson; Mike Warfield of Monaca, Pa. (1991); and posthumously, Thomas J. Ferland (1986) of Webster, N.Y.

Newton and Nancy Fowler of Concord and members of their family have made a gift to Catawba College to establish the Fowler Family Endowed Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student athlete who maintains a 2.75 grade point while majoring in teacher education.

Dr. Donald E. Fuoss ’47 of Sacramento, California says the scholarship he has established at Catawba College pays tribute to almost 60 years of marriage to his late wife, Frances Arthur Fuoss ’45. Mrs. Fuoss died December 4, 2004 after a six-year battle with colon cancer.

Several Catawba College students and their band, Labeling Deloris, played a gig at Arlene’s Grocery in New York City in early January. And, while they relished that experience, it simply left them wanting more performance opportunities and a wider audience for their original music.

Catawba College Alumnus John L. Powell, Jr. ’52 will tell you that he studied a copy of the Catawba College catalog at his Burgaw, N.C. high school for two years as he made plans for his future. Following his high school graduation, after he had applied and was accepted, he loaded his belongings into a trunk, boarded a bus, and traveled to Salisbury to attend Catawba, sight unseen.

Friends and family of the late Earl B. and Jane W. Ruth of Salisbury have established an Endowed Scholarship at Catawba College in the couple’s memory. Preference for the scholarship will be given to student athletes, with first preference going to athletes who are majoring in education.

An icon in the history of Catawba College has passed from the scene. Marion M. “Chub” Richards ‘41, who ably served his alma mater in a variety of staff and faculty positions over 38 years, died Tuesday, December 7, at his home in Salisbury. He was 85 and had been ill for several months.

The Archibald and Frances Rufty Foundation has made a gift to Catawba College to fund the Lt. Joe Hearne Rufty Memorial First Family Scholarship. The scholarship is being established in the memory of Mrs. Rufty’s step-son and the late Mr. Rufty’s son, who was killed in Vietnam on January 29, 1970.

"It was thanks to my First Family Scholarship that I was able to enjoy a truly life-changing experience at Catawba College, both inside and outside the classroom, " Senior Katie Phelps of Prince Frederick, Md., said at the annual First Family Scholarship Luncheon held Oct. 27. She spoke on behalf of her fellow scholars at the event held in Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus.

Jack and Jackie Taylor of Rockwell have established a scholarship at Catawba College. It will provide financial assistance to a student-athlete from Rowan County who is a member of the College baseball team and who demonstrates both ability and financial need. The Taylors are both Catawba College alumni.

Catawba College Alumnus Cy Alexander ’75 admits that he has a little less hair and weighs a little more than he did when he played basketball for the Indians three decades ago. But this player turned collegiate coach has not lost his passion for his alma mater or the memories of the life lessons he learned on Catawba’s campus.

The Catawba College Theatre Arts Department’s production of "Island” was recognized as the 2003-2004 Outstanding College Production during the Metrolina Theatre Awards presentation held Sunday, September 19. “Island” was written by Catawba’s 2003-2004 Peterson Emerging Playwright Competition winner Kevin Brewer.

What do a frog, arterial venous malformation, and sailing all have in common? They are what bring the semi-autobiographical musical comedy, “A New Brain,” to life. “A New Brain,” will be the first Blue Masque student- produced musical performed in 10 years when it opens at Catawba College’s Florence Busby Corriher Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 6. Other performances are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7-9, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10.

The Catawba College's Theatre Arts Department will present "Playhouse Creatures" at 7:30 p.m. each evening between September 28 and October 2 in Hedrick Little Theatre.

Catawba College begins a new series of Tuesday Music 515 performances beginning at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, September 14, in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. This year’s Tuesday Music 515 Series will open with a duo recital by Ralph Hair, playing baritone horn, and Robert Durocher, organ. They will play a program including music by Albinoni, Pachelbel, Handel, and Mozart.

The new baseball field wall at Catawba College’s Newman Park was dedicated Saturday in a ceremony held before the college’s opening game of the football season. A crowd of around one hundred gathered to show their appreciation to Cecil and Nan Whitley of Salisbury who once again spearheaded a major sports improvement project at the college.

In 1964, the grand opening of the Robertson College-Community Center at Catawba College provided both the College and the Salisbury-Rowan Community with performance venues for various theatrical and musical events. Now 40 years after its opening, the facility will continue to provide those same venues thanks to some much- needed system upgrades now underway.

Catawba College Alumna Amy Alderman MacKay ’93 of Wilmington is running her family’s business and loving it. Her company only sells one product at present, but by all reports that one product is a retail hit.

For a portion of May, the Catawba College Guest House was the Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Guild’s Designer House. Thanks to a substantial gift from Catawba Trustee and Alumnus Larry Cloninger ’74 and wife Susan, the guest house will remain elegantly furnished and be renamed the Cloninger Guest House at Catawba.

Jacqueline Cameron Leonard of Lexington received the Adrian L. Shuford, Jr. Award for Distinguished Service May 12 at Catawba College’s annual President’s Circle Dinner held on campus. The College hosts the event to recognize the college’s major donors and this year almost 300 people attended.
