The Catawba College Chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honor society, inducted five new members during an April 17 ceremony held in Ketner Hall on campus. Inductees included Andrew McCollister of Rockwell; Cameron Beard of Conover; Suzanne "Suzie" Williams of Efland; Jordan Hunsaker of Charlotte; and Luke Kooyman of Salt Lake City, Utah.

On March 3, Catawba College hosted CAT-RUM-2012, a regional undergraduate mathematics conference, sponsored in part by the Mathematics Association of America and the National Science Foundation [DMS-0846477]. Catawba College Mathematics Professor, Dr. Paul Baker, served as the conference director for the second year. Math and science undergraduates from area colleges and universities came both to present their mathematical research and to hear about research at other schools.

The Mathematical Association of America held its Southeastern Regional Section Meeting at the Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia, on March 8-10. At the conference, Catawba College Mathematics Professor, Dr. Paul Baker, made a presentation: Using Topology to Solve a Geometric Existence Question.

A Catawba College alumna, a faculty member and a student were each recognized at the College's annual Church/College Dinner held Feb. 20 on campus in Peeler Crystal Lounge. Those attending included trustees, college administrators, students and supporters of Catawba's Campus Ministry and its Lilly Center for Vocation and Values.

The Catawba College Math Club and KME Chapter sponsored a visit by alumnus Daniel D. Dubree, assistant director of the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) for the FBI's Information and Technology Branch, on September 22 in Ketner Hall. Dubree spoke to members of the college community about the mathematics and computer science involved in his career at the FBI.

Again this year, Catawba College students from various disciplines shared their diverse research projects during the 2011 Interdisciplinary Research Symposium held Thursday, April 21 in the Leonard Lounge of the Cannon Student Center. Faculty, staff and students on campus dropped by during the two-hour event to listen and learn from these students.

Dr. Paul Baker, a Catawba College professor of mathematics, attended the Mathematical Association of America's Southeastern Regional Section meeting at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa on April 1-2.

Catawba College's Department of Mathematics hosted CAT-RUM 2011 — a Research Undergraduate Mathematics Conference on campus on March 5. Thirty undergraduate math majors and their advisors from North and South Carolina colleges and universities attended the conference. Eight of the undergraduates presented talks covering a wide spectrum of mathematical applications.

There will be no increase in Catawba College's tuition, room and board for day students in the 2011-2012 academic year. College Trustees made that decision at their Feb. 15 meeting. Tuition will remain $25,160 per year for students in the day program enrolled in between 12 and 18 semester credit hours, while annual room and board for these students will stay at $8,700.
