    Tar Heel Boys' State at Catawba College June 16-22

    Catawba College will host the 74th annual session of Tar Heel Boys' State June 16-22. This is the tenth consecutive year that the weeklong event has been held on campus and approximately 300 participants, all rising high school seniors from North Carolina, are expected.     ESPN's Basketball Color Commentator Dick Vitale was just one of the sportscaster/sportswriter celebrities in Catawba College's Goodman Gym on June 10. He was on hand for the 54th annual NSSA Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and was this year's NSSA Hall of Fame sportscasting inductee.

    Catawba's Incoming First-Year Students Can Select Their First-Year Seminars through July

    Until July, incoming first-year students can select their top three choices from among all of Catawba's unique first-year seminars. First-Year Seminar (FYS) is an integrated comprehensive discussion and seminar course that approaches an interesting topic from multiple perspectives. All first time freshmen take FYS. Not only do students enjoy learning about various topics with their peers, but there are common elements across all First-Year Seminars.

    74th Consecutive Session of Tar Heel Girls State to Be Held at Catawba College

    June 9-15 will be the 74th consecutive year of Tar Heel Girls State, and for the twelfth year, Catawba College will host the weeklong session. At the annual event, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of North Carolina, several hundred girls from across North Carolina, all high school juniors who are academically in the top third of their class, will participate.     Catawba Student, Miss Queen City 2013, Will Compete in Miss N.C. Pageant

    Catawba College student TyNia Rene' Brandon of Charlotte, who was crowned Miss Queen City 2013 in January, will compete for the title of Miss North Carolina June 14-22 in Raleigh. TyNia, the daughter of Tyrone and Sharon Brandon, is a senior at Catawba, pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre. During the Miss Queen City Pageant, she sang an Italian aria entitled "Star Vichino" and won the talent portion of the pageant.

    Catawba's Psychology Honor Society Inducts New Members

    The Catawba College chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, welcomed three new members during an induction ceremony held in late April at DJ's Restaurant. The new members are Madelin Contreras of Salisbury, Kaitlin Johnson of Myersville, Md., and Cinthia Rodriguez of Salisbury. The advisor is Dr. Lyn Boulter, professor of psychology.

    Catawba's Chemistry Honor Society Inducts Members

    Gamma Sigma Epsilon, Catawba College's chemistry honor society, recently initiated new members. The induction ceremony for the Alpha Delta Chapter took place April 24 on campus.

    New Members Inducted into Tri-Beta Honor Society at Catawba College

    The Catawba College's Tau Eta Chapter of Beta Beta Beta, the national biological honor society, inducted nine members at its annual induction ceremony on April 25. Graduating seniors who are members of the society were also recognized at the ceremony.

    Catawba College Commissions 13 SEGS Students as Junior Marshals

    Thirteen students from Catawba College's School of Evening and Graduate Studies were commissioned as Junior Marshals in an April 20 ceremony. Dean of the School of Evening and Graduate Studies, Dr. Edith Bolick, and College Marshal, Professor David Pulliam, officiated at the ceremony.
