Catawba College Recognizes Students, Faculty, Staff at Annual Awards Convocation
Members of the Catawba College community gathered in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on April 23 to celebrate achievement. The occasion was the annual Awards Convocation.Scheduled the day after Earth Day, the awards distributed were eco-friendly, made of Catawba blue, 100% recycled glass. They symbolized the college's commitment to environmental responsibility and are a reminder to the recipients to promote a greener, more sustainable lifestyle.
April 21 Piano Concert Concludes Catawba College Artist Series for Spring
A piano concert by Steven Heyman at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel will conclude the Catawba College Artist Series for spring semester. This concert is free and open to the public. Heyman is currently an Associate Professor and Co-Chair of the Keyboard Department at Syracuse University. In the central New York area, he has an active performing career including being the soloist with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra 27 times over a 35 year period.
Catawba Professor to Participate in Summer Music Workshop in Seoul
Dr. David L. Fish, associate professor of music and chair of the music department at Catawba College, has been accepted to take part in a traditional Korean music international workshop at Korea's National Gugak Center in Seoul. The all-expense paid workshop starts June 17 and runs for two weeks.
Catawba Singers to Offer Concert at First Reformed UCC in Lexington
First Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington will host a concert by the Catawba Singers at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 14. The church is located at 104 E. Center Street and members of the general public are invited to attend the concert.
United in Prayer Rally Scheduled at Catawba College
The Catawba College Gospel Choir will host a United in Prayer Rally on Wednesday, March 20 between 6 and 8 p.m. in Leonard Lounge of the Cannon Student Center. At the rally, free prayer posters will be distributed that students and others may write a prayer on, photograph their prayer and then share it via social media. Catawba Pride Day Set for April 27
Catawba College has slated its Pride Day for Saturday, April 27, and plans are for the new and returning students to the Pride Marching Band to be able to interact. Music for the 2013 Pride Marching Band halftime show will be available for preview. Beginning at 1 p.m. in the Williams Music Building, new students will have an opportunity to audition for the Pride – its wind, percussion and color guard units – as well as for music department scholarships. Feb. 22nd Piano Concert Continues Catawba Artist Series
A free program of piano music by Patrick Behringer at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel continues the Catawba Artist Series for spring semester. Behringer will perform works of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Prokofiev. Behringer performs throughout the Fort Worth, Texas area and maintains a private piano studio there. He is a regular lecture recitalist in public schools as part of the Fort Worth Contemporary Music Fund's education program, "The Legacy of the Americas."
'83 Alumnus and His Parents Memorialize Brother through Scholarship
A new scholarship fund established at Catawba College will provide music scholarships for students from Rowan County. Steven J. Shuping and his parents, Romas and Sarah Shuping, all of Salisbury, established the Romas H. Shuping, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund in memory of their brother and son. Steve Shuping, a 1983 alumnus of Catawba, says the new scholarship was a tangible way to memorialize his brother who died accidentally in 1967 at age eight. "All of my siblings have played music...
Jan. 20th Piano Concert Begins Catawba Artist Series
A free piano concert provided by Catawba College adjunct faculty member, Wei Jiao, at 3 p.m. Sunday Jan. 20, in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel kicks off a Catawba Artist Series for spring semester. Jiao will perform works of Scarlatti, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and modern Chinese composer Zhou Long.
Students Take Part in Inauguration Events for N.C. Governor Pat McCrory '78
Catawba College students will participate in several inauguration events for North Carolina's new governor, 1978 Catawba alumnus, Pat McCrory. Catawba's Vernaculars All Stars will perform between 7:30 and 8 p.m. on Friday, January 11 at the Inauguration Ball.
