STUDENT BLOG: Interning at the Canadian Embassy - Week Three
by Cyle Petersen '10. After the first two weeks here in Washington, I didn't think it was possible to get any busier ... boy was I wrong. Week three left me with only minutes each day to sit and relax. This week I had a two hour lecture, two Congressional hearings to cover, a two hour morning seminar, a small group meeting at a local law firm, an all-day law school forum, a mid-term and a 30 minute group presentation to stuff into my schedule on top of my full-time internship and class schedule.

by Cyle Petersen '10. After a much needed weekend off, Monday morning had come around again. It's always nice to have a few days off but I actually look forward to going to my internship every morning. The people are all so nice and laid back so it makes it fun to work there. I didn't have any work leftover from the previous week and my bosses were all pretty busy taking care of their overloaded e-mail accounts so I didn't do a whole lot of important Canadian Embassy stuff...

VIDEO: Bungee Jumping in Costa Rica
Catawba Student Riker Gold bungees off a platform while on an excursion in Costa Rica during the Language Immersion program in Summer, 2009. This program grants students six hours of Catawba College credit and includes four hours a day of class five days a week for four weeks. Excursions and cultural activities are also a program expectation. Coursework is available at all levels of study. Catawba College faculty and staff direct the program and travel with the group. Academic Departments Form Schools at Catawba College
The academic structure at Catawba College is changing. In addition to different academic departments headed by chairs, academic departments will now be affiliated with five different schools, each headed by a dean. Overseeing the five schools and serving as the institution's chief academic officer is Provost Dr. Rick Stephens who joined the College in January.

In the Hot Zone: One Man, One Year, Twenty Wars, by Kevin Sites, has been chosen as the Common Summer Reading for 2009. The book details journalist Kevin Sites's travels through 20 distinct world conflicts from 2005-2006, during which time he was the war correspondent for Yahoo.com.
Catawba College Presidential Honor Roll Announced
A total of 120 students have been named to the Presidential Honor Roll List for the 2008-2009 academic year at Catawba College, according to Dr. W. Richard Stephens, Jr., Provost of the College. Center for Environment Receives Grant from Robertson Foundation
The Center for the Environment at Catawba College has received a $25,000 grant from the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation for the Center's Clean Air Initiative. The Robertson Foundation funds will be used to assist the Center in meeting the matching requirements for its CMAQ (Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality) grant with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Catawba Student Tapped as Undergrad Scientist at NC Biotech Center
Source: www.ncbiotech.org - Undergraduates at 15 North Carolina schools have won competitive grants for life-science research. The Undergraduate Research Fellowship Award program was unveiled this year by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. It brings to 19 the number of grant and loan programs administered by the Center to support education, research, commercialization and company development.
Catawba College Dean's List Announced
A total of 257 students have been named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at Catawba College, according to Dr. W. Richard Stephens, Jr., Provost of the College. Students named to the Dean's List have achieved a 3.5 grade point average in 15 or more semester hours. Read more...
