First Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington will host a concert by the Catawba Singers at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 14. The church is located at 104 E. Center Street and members of the general public are invited to attend the concert.

The production runs April 9-10 at 6:55 p.m., and April 11-13 at 7:30 p.m. in Hedrick Theatre on campus. The stage is set in late 1600s, Salem, Massachusetts, as something evil winds its way into a small village. Rumors of witchcraft run amok and young girls fall ill to unknown causes.

Entrepreneur Brandi Tysinger-Temple has been called an internet pioneer by CBS, HLN and Businessweek. The founder of the Lexington, N.C. kids clothing company will speak at Catawba College's 10th annual CEO Lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 25 in Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center. Tysinger-Temple will offer remarks entitled "Fearless Entrepreneurship in a Socially-Connected World: Community Building. Always Improving."

Bread Riot also provided locally grown foods for a tasting before the film. Set against the backdrop of rural Georgia, the film explores sustainable farming and the new face of agriculture.

The UNC Nutrition Research Institute in Kannapolis has received a $5.3 million grant to study fetal alcohol disorders in South Africa. The funds are from the National Institute of Health's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The study will be conducted by Dr. Philip May '69, a faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Nutrition Research Institute (NRI) and Department of Nutrition.

Robert Casmus, head athletic trainer at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, was one of two individuals inducted on March 23 into the North Carolina Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame. The 36th annual NCATA Spring Awards and Business Meeting was held at Carolinas Healthcare System – Northeast in Concord.

Author Sena Jeter Naslund contends that "loving a work of art is almost as good as writing it." She shared that contention with those gathered March 21 for Catawba College's 27th annual Brady Author's Symposium. Naslund said her fifth novel, "Ahab's Wife," launched her writing career and "changed my life in many ways." The book, four years in the making, "needed to be" and was her response to the lack of strong female protagonists in American literature.

Dr. John "Jack" Green, an associate professor of marketing in Catawba College's Ketner School of Business, chaired a session and made a presentation at an international conference held in Valencia, Spain, during the college's spring break.

Catawba's Teacher Education Department hosted the Spencer Kagan workshop, "From Survival to Success: Essential Strategies for New Teachers" at the Center for the Environment on March 14 and 15 for juniors and seniors majoring in Education.

The Center for the Environment at Catawba College will host its third Faith, Spirituality and Environmental Stewardship workshop on Thursday, April 18, at the Center facility on the Catawba campus. The workshops are designed to allow participants of various faiths to share their knowledge and experience or learn more about topics that focus on environmental stewardship. They are a Campaign for Clean Air initiative.

A new endowed scholarship established at Catawba College memorializes Anna Katherine Gregory Vance, a 2003 alumna who died in April 2011. The Scholarship was established by her husband, Dr. Shawn L. Vance of Kannapolis.

Two faculty members and several students from the psychology department at Catawba College attended the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in Atlanta, Ga., March 13-16.

Area teachers and the staff of the Center for the Environment met recently to explore ways the Center and its Campaign for Clean Air can help them in the classroom, especially as they prepare lessons on air pollution and ways to lessen it.

The Catawba College Gospel Choir will host a United in Prayer Rally on Wednesday, March 20 between 6 and 8 p.m. in Leonard Lounge of the Cannon Student Center. At the rally, free prayer posters will be distributed that students and others may write a prayer on, photograph their prayer and then share it via social media. A 1962 Catawba College alumna, the Reverend June Grubb, was honored by her alma mater as the recipient of the institution's 2013 College Church/Ministry Award. Grubb, who makes her home in Lexington and is active in the First Reformed United Church of Christ there, was recognized in February at a Church/College Dinner held on Catawba's campus.

"Every Body Needs an Athletic Trainer" is the 2013 theme for the month of March recognizing Athletic Trainers (ATs) as experts in taking care of all kinds of injuries and for their commitment to helping people prevent injuries and keeping people healthy and active.

Catawba College has slated its Pride Day for Saturday, April 27, and plans are for the new and returning students to the Pride Marching Band to be able to interact. Music for the 2013 Pride Marching Band halftime show will be available for preview. Joseph "Joe" R. Gorman and wife Sharon of Greensboro, Ga., have established a scholarship at Catawba College and students from Georgia will be given preference for it. The Center for the Environment and Bread Riot will host a screening of "GROW!" on Thursday, March 21, at the Center facility on the Catawba College campus. The film focuses on the new generation of sustainable farmers. "All across the U.S. there is a growing movement of educated young people who are leaving the cities to take up an agrarian life," the "GROW!" website says.
