Classes for the third year of Catawba's "J term," concluded on January 4, with 104 students seizing the opportunity to earn course credit online and/or to travel abroad over the break between semesters. While some courses included a travel component and took students to London, France, Nashville and even Nicaragua, other online courses netted them three credit hours in subject areas ranging from English to Psychology.

For a week in December, 10 Catawba students received an up-close look at the music industry in Nashville as part of a successful J-term travel course led by music professor David Fish. They met with key representatives at such major organizations as Sony/ATV Publishing, BMI, and Curb Records. They also had a chance to hear music performed live at the Grand Old Opry, the Earnest Tubb Midnight Jamboree, and the Loveless Barn. A number even got to take the stage themselves to perform on a musical showcase at the legendary Bluebird Café. As one student wrote in her post-trip report, "Over the course of a week, I feel like I gained more experience than I had ever imagined."
