Catawba College's Community Music Program is offering several camps for summer 2011, in addition to private lessons in almost every instrument. All camps are $100 for the entire 4 days and private lessons are $18.50 per 30 minute lesson. Very few slots are still available so register today!

"Receiving a college diploma" was the common theme during the two commencement exercises in Catawba College's Keppel Auditorium on Saturday, May 14. The different exercises were for two distinct populations of students at the institution.

When Dr. George Drum, a 1962 alumnus of Catawba, returned to his alma mater as a faculty member in 1987, he brought his academic journey and his family ties to the institution full circle. Drum followed his grandfather’s footsteps as a faculty member; Harvy Kopenhaver was on the faculty at Old Catawba in Newton.

It was 87-year-old Martha Rhea Hartley Platt of Salisbury who was the first baccalaureate candidate to walk across the Keppel Auditorium stage during Catawba College's Commencement Exercise on Saturday, May 14. For Platt, it was an opportunity to remedy a regret she had had for 52 years.

Kristopher Watson of Voorhees, N.J., a 2011 Catawba College graduate and tenor, wowed those gathered for the Baccalaureate Service on campus Friday, May 13, with a solo performance of "Over the Rainbow." The song's inclusion in the service was at the request of outgoing Catawba College President Dr. W. Craig Turner. Turner, who leaves Catawba this month after serving three years as its 21st president, tied his baccalaureate homily to that song.

A paper authored by Catawba College professor, Dr. Sheila Brownlow, and several of her students, Amanda J. Janas of Concord, Kathleen A. Blake of Atlanta, Ga., and Kathleen T. Rebadow of Melbourne, Fla., has been accepted for publication by the journal, "Psychology."

Women's Lacrosse, under the direction of Ashley Gilroy, will kick off its inaugural season in January 2012.

A group of students, faculty and staff from Catawba College will depart on May 16 for the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham, Alabama area on a mission trip to assist with clean up and recovery after recent destructive tornadoes there. The weeklong trip is coordinated by Volunteer Catawba. The Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ in Birmingham, Ala. will serve as the base of operation for the Catawba team as they help remove debris and distribute much-needed food, water...

This Saturday, the 2011 graduating class of Catawba College will be saying goodbye to their alma mater as they cross the stage of Keppel Auditorium and receive their degrees. It will be a day marked with celebration and some much needed R&R after four years of dedicated study. The weekend of celebration will inevitably end, and these accomplished young men and women will again focus their efforts on a question of great importance: What now?

The House Elections committee recently voted to shorten the early voting period from 18 to 11 days. The popularity of early voting has increased over the past few years. A recent study by Dr. Michael Bitzer, professor of political science, showed 60% of NC's 2008 general election ballots were cast before election day, up from 30% in the 2004 election.

In May, Sinnott retires from Catawba College after 42 years of teaching English — most notably Shakespeare. "We ended up getting out of school early," Jeremy Gardner recalled. Gardner, from Concord, is a sophomore from Catawba College.

Catawba College will host an Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Climate Corps Public Sector fellow this summer who is specially trained to identify areas where the college can save energy and money. Carrie Gonnella, a candidate for a master of environmental management degree in the Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment, will work with Catawba's facilities management staff to develop a custom energy efficiency plan for the college.

John Wear, director of the Center for the Environment at Catawba College, delivered the keynote address April 29 at the three-day 2011 Moravian Environmental Stewardship Conference in Laurel Springs, N.C. The conference, co-sponsored by Laurel Ridge and the former Commission on Church & Society, was for congregations and stewardship leaders from across the Moravian Church's Southern Province.

Two individuals have joined the staff of the Center for the Environment at Catawba College for the coming year. Craig Midgett, a former researcher with the Environmental Assistance Office at UNC-Charlotte, and Michael Smith, a LEED-accredited professional, will work with the Center in energy-related fellowships.
