Alpha Chi, National Honor Society, at Catawba College Earns Award
Catawba College's Omicron Chapter of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society, was one of 37 chapters in the nation to earn the society's Star Chapter designation for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Four Hundred Miles Away From Home: Two Catawba College Students Thrive and Grow
Both of them are students at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., and although they're each 400 miles from their respective homes, they love life at their college. Ashley Acken of Marietta, Pa., and Kyle Hendrick of Palatka, Fla., have more in common than the 400 miles between Catawba College and their hometowns. They both are student leaders on the picturesque campus of 1000 students, and there, they have begun to discover themselves and their full potential.
"Follow the Golden Thread of Your Life," Educator and Author Ruth Anderson Says
Educator and author Dr. Ruth Anderson shared her own morality tale with members of the Catawba College community when she spoke on campus at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22. Anderson was the keynote speaker for the eighth annual Lilly Colloquium and her visit to campus was sponsored by Catawba's Lilly Center for Vocation and Values and Catawba's Goodman School of Education.
'10-'11 N.C. Teacher of the Year Offers Encouraging Words to Catawba’s Prospective Teachers
"Don't be afraid about your choice to become a teacher," Jennifer Facciolini, the 2010-2011 AT&T N.C. Teacher of the Year, told Catawba College's prospective teachers during a Feb. 24 visit to campus. "There will always be jobs for great teachers. Don't be afraid of the unknown in education."
Catawba Alumnus Named New Interim IT Director for Davidson County Schools

No Tuition Increase at Catawba for 2011-2012
There will be no increase in Catawba College's tuition, room and board for day students in the 2011-2012 academic year. College Trustees made that decision at their Feb. 15 meeting. Tuition will remain $25,160 per year for students in the day program enrolled in between 12 and 18 semester credit hours, while annual room and board for these students will stay at $8,700.
Harry Chapin Scholarship to Be Established at Catawba College; Celebration at Hard Rock Cafe New York in Times Square
Celebration at Hard Rock Cafe New York in Times Square. One of Harry Chapin's famous lines was "Keep the change." Fans of the late great singer/songwriter are now being asked to contribute that change (and maybe the interest it has accrued over the years) to honor his memory. The funds will help endow a Harry Chapin music scholarship at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.
Catawba College Performs Beatles' "Abbey Road" at Hard Rock Cafe New York in Times Square
The Beatles stopped touring in 1966. One reason: their music was becoming too complex to perform live. Or so they thought. The Vernaculars, a student ensemble from Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, will perform all of the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album live at the Hard Rock Cafe New York in Times Square on Saturday, March 5. Free and open to the public, the show begins at 9:00 p.m.
Ben Smith Named Dean of Students at Catawba College
Since June of 2005, George "Ben" Smith has worked in a variety of capacities in Catawba College's Office of Student Affairs. He has served as Assistant Director, responsible for Housing and Residence Life, as Associate Dean of Students, directing Conduct Administration and Intramural and Wellness programs, and since November, he has served as Interim Dean of Students.
Catawba's Church/College Award and Paul Fisher Service Awards Presented
It was The Reverend Kristen Gerner Vaughn, a 1999 alumna of Catawba College, a United Church of Christ minister and a mother of three, who was honored February 14 as the recipient of the 2011 Catawba's Campus Ministry Church/College Award. Vaughn, pastor of Brick UCC in Whitsett, was lauded for her service to both the Church and Catawba College during a dinner event held in Peeler Crystal Lounge on campus. Catawba Singers Ready for Spring 2011 Concert Tour
The Catawba Singers, Catawba College's highly regarded and auditioned concert choir, are set to depart on their Spring 2011Tour on Thursday, March 3. The 2011 Tour coincides in part with Catawba's spring break and includes performance stops in Huntington, W. Va.; Evansville, Ind.; Springfield, Ill.; Chicago, Ill.; Louisville, Ky.; Bristol, Tenn.; and Hickory, N.C.

Catawba College Trustees Announce Interim President, Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine
Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine, chancellor emeritus of UNC Pembroke, will be the new interim president of Catawba College, effective March 15. The Catawba Board of Trustees made that official on Monday, February 14, after the executive committee of the Board put forth Oxendine's name as its interim candidate of choice during an executive session of the membership.

Catawba Alumnus Hired as Laurel Football Coach

Colum McCann to Speak at Catawba College's 2011 Brady Author's Symposium
Author Colum McCann, winner of the 2009 National Book Award for his novel, "Let the Great World Spin," will be the featured speaker at the 25th annual Brady Author's Symposium scheduled Thursday, March 3, 2011. In a July 2009 "New York Times" review, contributing writer Jonathan Mahler called McCann's "Let the Great World Spin," "an emotional tour de force."
Catawba Professor to Serve as Judge in International Moot Court Competition
Dr. Sanford Silverburg, professor of political science at Catawba College, is one of the judges in the 2011 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The International Law Students Association of Chicago, Ill. coordinates the competition, now in its 52nd year. The Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries.

Mathematics Honor Society Inducts Members
The Catawba College Chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honor society, inducted five new members during a February 3 ceremony held in Ketner Hall on campus.

Six inaugural members will be inducted into the Catawba College Athletic Training Hall of Fame on Feb. 12. Catawba College Forum Explores Impact of the Egyptian Crisis
Students at Catawba College may not fully understand the protests occurring in Egypt, but they'll be much more aware of the situation should their wallets be affected. This was the consensus of a forum, "Insights into Egypt," whose members Wednesday night, Feb. 2, discussed the impact of the protests in Cairo. The event was sponsored by Catawba's Department of History and Politics.

New Songwriting Course Offered through Catawba's Community Music Program
A new songwriting course is now being offered through the Community Music Program at Catawba College. The course will combine the study of lyricism, melody, harmony, and form to create original compositions. Students will learn how to compose songs using different chord types and techniques of lyric writing.
