    Catawba Alumnus Is San Francisco 49ers Interim Head Coach

    When the San Francisco 49ers take on the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Jan. 2, the team will be under interim head coach Jim Tomsula, a 1990 Catawba College alumnus. Tomsula's appointment was announced during a press conference on Monday, Dec. 27, and comes on the heels of the firing of the 49ers' former head coach Mike Singletary.

    Catawba College to Host Research Undergraduate Mathematics Conference

    On Saturday, March 5th, the Catawba College Math Department will hold a regional Research Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (CAT-RUM 2011), sponsored in part by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and NSF-RUMC. The conference will take place in Ketner Hall on campus.

    Spring Semester Class to Offer Preparation for Life after College

    It was a letter that Ralph W. Ketner received from a recent Catawba College graduate that made him think that young adults need lessons in personal finance. Now, the 90-year-old Food Lion founder will be co-teaching a class at Catawba during the spring semester with Professor Al Carter, a classroom veteran of 42 years, to try to share those lessons.

    2009 Alumnus Plays Curly in National Tour of "Oklahoma"

    Catawba Alumnus Directs 100-Year-Old Choral Society

    By Susan Shinn, Catawba College News Service. You'd think a 23-year-old might be intimidated about directing a choir that's 100 years old. There's a lot to be said for youthful enthusiasm. Matt Newton, a 2010 graduate of Catawba, took the reins of the Salisbury-Rowan Choral Society this summer. The society is a century old this year. Newton graduated from high school in Raleigh and came to Catawba as a theater major, but soon found out it wasn't for him.

    The 2010 Cohort of West Teaching Scholars recently went on a retreat to Wrightsville Beach over Fall Break, October 16-19.     Catawba College School of Education to Host Association Meeting

    The Catawba College School of Education, specifically, the Curriculum Materials Center at the college, will host the Fall/Winter 2010 North Carolina Curriculum Materials Center Directors Association Meeting on campus on December 17.     Dr. Aaron B. Butler, assistant professor of English in the School of Evening and Graduate Studies at Catawba College, recently delivered a paper entitled "Beowulf Then and Now: Women and Warriors in the Old English Poem and in Robert Zemeckis's Film Adaptation" at the annual conference of the Mid-Atlantic Popular American Culture Association.

    Interest Shown in Catawba College Energy Corps; Still Accepting Applications

    The Center for the Environment has received a great deal of interest in its Catawba College Energy Corps, a program that will facilitate the placement of as many as 17 students or recent graduates in on-the-job green energy positions. Candidates must be currently enrolled in college, pursing an associate, bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, or they must have completed such a program within the past three years. Students from any accredited college or university may apply.

    Center for Environment to Host Presentation by Environmental Defense Fund President and Co-Author

    The president of the Environmental Defense Fund and his coauthor will speak Thursday, January 20, at Catawba College on "Earth: The Sequel – What's Next for the Clean Energy Revolution?" Fred Krupp, who has headed the organization for 26 years, wrote the book, "Earth: The Sequel – The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming" with staff member and journalist Miriam Horn.     Community Music Program Announces Christmas Recital and Spring Registration

    Catawba College's Community Music program has Christmas Recitals for all students scheduled between 1:30 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 12 in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. The recital is free and open to the public and members of the community are invited to attend. Community Music's first senior citizens group piano class and group guitar class, Suzuki violin class, and the new Broadway and teen voice classes will all be performing for the first time at this event.

    Ketner Offers Lecture

    Mr. Ralph W. Ketner delivered a business lecture to a group on Wednesday, December 1 at the McColl School of Business at Queens University of Charlotte. His lecture was part of the BB&T Distinguished Leaders in Action Lecture Series.
