    Meet 2010 Catawba graduate, Shane Aldridge. While a student at Catawba, Shane Aldridge '10 of China Grove, N.C., double majored in Religion and Philosophy and Political Science with an emphasis in the American Political Experience. An internship at the Rowan County Register of Deeds Office in Salisbury led to Shane landing a part-time position there after his May graduation.

    Former Catawba College First Lady Dies

    Jacqueline Cameron Leonard of Lexington, N.C., a former first lady of Catawba College and wife of the late Dr. Theodore Leonard, Catawba's 17th President, died Sept. 26. Her funeral service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at First Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington. Mrs. Leonard was a generous benefactor of Catawba College. She and her late husband established and funded several endowed scholarships and supported several of the institution's capital campaigns.

    Fifth Annual Lord Salisbury Marching Band Classic Slated at Catawba College

    For the fifth consecutive year, marching bands from Rowan and surrounding counties will compete in the Lord Salisbury Marching Band Classic at Catawba College on Saturday, October 2.     Catawba College to present "Choral Day 2010"

    The resonant halls of Catawba College's Omwake-Dearborn Chapel will be overflowing with sound on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. as the college presents its second annual Choral Day Concert. The concert will feature all of the school's choral ensembles (more than 130 voices) in their debut concert of the new academic year.

    Singer Jen Chapin Coming to Catawba College

    Musical artist Jen Chapin is bringing the unique style of music that she calls "urban folk" to Catawba College on Monday evening, October 4, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in Hedrick Little Theater of the Robertson College-Community Center. The price of admission for the concert is a donation of canned goods or other non-perishable food items for Rowan Helping Ministries.

So now, please allow me to get on my soapbox in regards to recent events in the U.S. I am a big believer in our Constitutional rights, but the question is to what ends do we use those rights.

    Catawba Professor Keeps Learning, Teaching

    By Shelley Smith, SalisburyPost.com - Dr. Jay Buxton went on his 38th mission trip to Georgia in February when he was 90 years old. Three years ago he climbed scaffolding, mixed concrete and helped build a health clinic in Guatemala. After retiring from Catawba College in 1987 when he was 68, he hiked most of the Appalachian Trail with his friends.

    Ralph W. Ketner, founder and chairman emeritus of Food Lion, Inc., marks his 90th birthday on Sept. 20 and the faculty, staff and students of Catawba College plan to help him celebrate. Mr. Ketner, who keeps daily office hours in the building on Catawba's campus named for him and built through his generosity, has a tradition of bringing Krispy Kreme Doughnuts into the office each Monday.     Catawba Faculty Offer Two Free Recitals

    It's a great week for music lovers in Salisbury. Two outstanding musicians from the Catawba College faculty are offering free recitals in one week. On Wednesday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on the Catawba College campus, woodwind player Jack Murray will perform works by Benjamin Britten, Steven Harlos, and others.

    Meet Sarah Rossini, Catawba's New Director of Residence Life

    Sarah Rossini, Catawba College's new director of residence life, feels that her job allows her to "make a difference" in the lives of students. At 3:30 am my alarm sounds and a few minutes later a voice comes over the loudspeaker of the mosque three doors down: "Sahur, sahur", the voice says. "Bapak-bapak, ibu-ibu, anak-anak, sahur sahur", it continues.

    Catawba College is pleased to announce that Dr. Woodrow Hood is one of only 42 mid-level administrators in higher education nationwide selected by the Council of Independent Colleges and the American Academic Leadership Institute to participate in a year-long Senior Leadership Academy.
