Three students, all tutors at Catawba College's Writing Center, have had a paper accepted for presentation at the 2010 National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing. The students, Julie Gilley of Dobson and Elizabeth and Robert Sawyer, both of Salisbury, will present original research in a panel entitled "Calming the Sea: Creating a Comfortable Tutoring Environment" at the conference to be held in Baltimore, Md., Nov. 4-6.

Popular sports radio host, Mark Packer, also known as "the Packman," will be on hand for Catawba's home football opener against St. Augustine on Saturday, Sept. 4. This game is also the first in a series of themed game days, with Police Officers, Firefighters and Emergency Responders to be admitted free along with three of their guests to the 7 p.m. match-up against St. Augustine.

Delve into the history of stock car racing and examine the connection between the "business" of illegal whiskey making and the birth of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, better known by its acronym, NASCAR, at the first Catawba College Community Forum of the 2010-2011 academic year. In an effort to monitor and control its energy costs, Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina is partnering with Duke Energy on a yearlong energy management pilot program that is made possible by digital, smart grid technology. Through the energy management program, seven large buildings on the Catawba campus are equipped with digital smart meters that gather energy usage data for each building.

Fifteen students were commissioned for service as Junior Marshals by Catawba College President Dr. W. Craig Turner in a ceremony held Wednesday, August 25 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus.These Junior Marshals, who assist College Marshal David Pulliam, assure that order and dignity are observed during formal occasions at the college, including Semester Opening convocations, Award's Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement, where they add order and dignity to the proceedings.

Elements representing the best of Catawba College were present when the institution officially convened for the 2010-2011 academic year on Thursday, August 26. The last non-air-conditioned spaces on Catawba College's campus will finally be cool thanks to a new Facilities project that is nearing completion. The Goodman Gymnasium, the Meyer Auxiliary Gymnasium and the racquetball courts, all part of the Abernethy Physical Education Center, were the targets of the cooling project.

A poem by Dr. Janice Fuller, Writer-in-Residence at Catawba College, is featured in the current issue of the online magazine "The Pedestal". "Visitations at Harlaxton" is a four-part poem based on her experiences teaching at Harlaxton College in England during the fall of 2007. The magazine also includes a recording of Fuller reading the poem.

by Lauren Ebersole '07. Happy Fasting, although I'm pretty sure none of you are fasting. Ramadhan has started and I am giving fasting a try. Many of you are probably thinking how is Lauren going that many hours a day without food. It is not without difficulty. Thoughts of ice cream often pop into my head. Actually not drinking anything is more difficult than not eating. Note: I did not feel so great on Day 2 of fasting, but Day 3 went much better.

Catawba College continues to be ranked as one of the nation's Best Regional Colleges, according to the 2011 edition of "Best Colleges," published by U.S.News & World Report. In the edition, 319 colleges are ranked as "Best Regional Colleges" according to geographic region (North, South, Midwest, West) with Catawba ranked 15th among 96 of these colleges in the South.

The crape myrtles were in full color, blooming in wild pink abandon. The persistent chirp of insects was soon blotted out by the sounds of greetings and conversation. Welcome to move-in day at Catawba College, the day when freshmen and other new students converge on the green, shaded campus on West Innes Street.

The Center for the Environment at Catawba College has received a $184,000 grant from the N.C. Energy Office's Student Energy Internship and Fellowship Program to launch the Catawba College Energy Corps. It was one of 23 private businesses, public agencies and public and private universities to receive a combined $5.6 million from the N.C. Energy Office for the program, which was funded with money from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Many Salisbury businesses will extend hours and add staff this weekend in anticipation of North Carolina's sales tax holiday. Back-to-school items like classroom supplies, clothes, sports equipment and computers will ring up without state and local sales taxes beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ending at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

Again this year, Catawba College is one of the country's best institutions for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review. The education services company features the school in the new 2011 edition of its guidebook, "The Best 373 Colleges."

by Stephanie Cook '12. Bonjour from France! Our group has moved from Madrid to Paris and we are enjoying our time in this magnificent city! But, before we came to Paris, my friends and I had an action-packed weekend exploring Segovia, El Escritorial, and more parts of Madrid. I have a lot of cool information to share! Friday was the last day of classes. Luckily, my class had finished up the day before as well as Dr. Wilson's class so we were able to do whatever we wanted that day!

Dr. David Peden, professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and Microbiology/Immunology and Toxicology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will speak to area leaders and health professionals Aug. 12 on "The Health Effects of Ozone and Asthma." The noon luncheon will take place at the Center for the Environment on the Catawba College campus.
