The Catawba College Chiefs Club hopes to fill Shuford Stadium during home football games this fall by promoting themed game days. A DNC site selection team is expected in Charlotte on Tuesday to look at hotels, convention space and security, but the final decision may hinge on something else. "When it comes to the location itself, it does boil down to politics specifically," said Mark Erwin, a former ambassador in the Clinton administration.

Catawba College students will have the option this fall to rent textbooks for their classes through the on-campus bookstore managed by Follett Higher Education Group. College Bookstore Manager Daniel Lowell says 40% of all titles for day classes and 37% of all titles for evening classes will be available for rent. According to Lowell, students spend between $600 and $800 each semester on textbooks for their classes and the new option of renting could save Catawba students hundreds of dollars.

The late Eugene Deal of Mooresville, N.C., formerly of Charlotte, N.C., made a gift the year before his death to establish a scholarship at Catawba College named for him and his late wife. Deal, a 1938 alumnus of Catawba, died July 10, 2010. His wife predeceased him in 2005. The Evelyn S. and Eugene E. Deal Family Endowed Scholarship will be targeted to students who are graduates of South Rowan High School, members of First Reformed Church of Landis, N.C., and who are majoring in education.

I thought school started on Monday the 12th and my scheduling/planning/list making self was freaking out that I had not made any plans with other teachers. So I requested a meeting with my counterpart for the Friday before school started, which we had, but planned little.

As Catawba College's Community Music Program marks its 26th year, it welcomes a new director – only its fourth since the program began in 1984. Erin Harper, who has worked with the program as its lead keyboard instructor, will fill the director's role held for the past 12 years by Dr. Julie Chamberlain. Chamberlain had accepted the program baton in 1997 when Elizabeth "Libby" Carlton, founder of the program, retired.

Catawba's Community Music Program is the only program in the area that offers group classes for piano. It does this utilizing a keyboard lab of 16 Yamaha state of the art keyboards. Group classes in piano are a fairly new and inventive way of teaching, and few people understand the value in learning in a group setting.

Dr. Joe Poston led a group of 14 girls on a night walk at the preserve Monday night as part of the Catawba Conservation Camp (C3). Other groups went to the preserve on successive nights. Each girl wore a headlamp and several carried large nets as they prepared to leave from the Center for the Environment.

I thought Madrid was a really cool place, but after my excursion to the coast, I learned Barcelona is an even more fun and exciting place to visit! For me, it was just about the same 4th of July as in America ... a four-hour Muslim religious program where I believe I was the subject of more than one conversation between the 150 or so women in attendance. An important lesson I have learned: suede ballet flats from Italy and hand-made leather sandals from Greece do not stand up to the climate and conditions of Indonesia. Shoe-lovers everywhere are devastated.

by Stephanie Cook '12. So the main reason I am here in Madrid is to take classes to help earn my Spanish minor. Each class is very lengthy; they are three hours long and they meet every day throughout the week. We only have weekends off and we even have to meet on one Saturday! It all works out though because the classes are only 3 and a half weeks long, which is a good deal!

Catawba College's School of Evening Studies will sponsor an open house on Thursday, July 22, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the old Cabarrus Bank Building at 201 West Avenue in Kannapolis. Prospective students will be given an overview of the program and financial aid opportunities.

by Stephanie Cook '12. After a long 36 hours of traveling, we made it to our final destination! The jet lag was tough on my body, but I was too excited to focus on my exhaustion. Stepping out of the airport and breathing the cool European air was refreshing. Especially since we had a bit of a stagnant period at the airport after we landed and left the plane. One of the guys from Catawba could not find his luggage at the baggage claim!
