    Catawba Conservation Camp Set for a Second Year with 54 Area Girls

An experiment for you to consider: What do you get when you synthesize 5 professors, 10 counselors, 2 staff members, 2 co-directors and 54 rising sixth- and seventh-grade girls? The second-annual Catawba Conservation Camp (C3), slated for July 11-16 on the campus of Catawba College.

    Catawba Chemistry Professor Attends Inaugural Summit to Advance Women's Leadership

    Dr. Carol Miderski, a Catawba College chemistry professor, was among 51 senior women professors in chemistry and physics from 46 liberal arts colleges gathered in Washington, D.C. recently to participate in the first ever summit focused on the Advancement of Senior Women Scientists at Liberal Arts Colleges.

    Catawba College Head Athletic Trainer Honored

    Robert Casmus, head athletic trainer at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, is the recipient of the 2010 Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award. The National Athletic Trainers' Association presented the award June 24 during its 2010 annual meeting and clinical symposia held in Philadelphia, Pa.

    71st Governor of the American Legion's Tar Heel Boys' State Elected

    Jon Edwards of Jacksonville was elected as Governor of the American Legion Tar Heel Boys' State Wednesday, June 23 during the week-long event held at Catawba College. Jon is a rising senior at Jacksonville High School. He is the son of John and Barbara Edwards of Jacksonville, N.C.

    VIDEO: Music Student Performs in Televised Horn Choir Session

    Melanie Hudson '12, a music education major, recently played in a horn choir session along with Dr. Barry Sang, Professor of Religion and Instructor in Music at Catawba. The performance was broadcast by public access Channel 21 in Mecklenburg County. Hudson and Sang are regular members of the Horn Society of the Carolinas group, which was invited to perform for the televised session.

    Members of Class of 2014 Participate in First of Two Freshman Retreats

    Almost three dozen students, all members of Catawba College's Class of 2014 attended the first of two freshman retreats June 17-19 at Johns River Camp near Collettsville, N.C. Participants hailed from as far away as New York, Kentucky and Georgia, and closer to home from Jamestown and Salisbury, N.C.

    Catawba's Ketner School of Business Launches Common Summer Reading for Upper Level Students

    All Catawba College students enrolled in upper level Business and Communication courses will be required to read an inaugural common reading, "1,000 Dollars & An Idea" by Sam Wyly, in preparation for their Fall 2010 courses.

    Catawba College Named Again to Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service

    Catawba College has been honored for the second year in a row by the Corporation for National and Community Service with a place on the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to America's communities.

    Catawba's Human Resource Officer to Serve as Chair-Elect of Southern Region Board

    Larry Farmer, human resources officer at Catawba College, has been elected to serve as chair-elect for the 2010-11 on the board of directors of College and University Professional Association for Human Resources Southern Region board. Farmer will assume the duties of chair for that board on July 1, 2011.

    Attend Open House for Catawba College's Evening Program

    Catawba's School of Evening and Graduate Studies will sponsor an open house on Thursday, June 24, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on campus in Ketner Hall, Room 108.     Catawba College Presidential Honor Roll Announced

    A total of 133 students have been named to the Presidential Honor Roll List for the 2009-2010 academic year at Catawba College, according to Dr. W. Richard Stephens, Jr., Provost of the College. Students named to the Presidential Honor Roll List have achieved a 3.7 grade point average in 30 or more semester hours.

    Catawba College Dean's List Announced

    A total of 285 students have been named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at Catawba College, according to Dr. W. Richard Stephens, Jr., Provost of the College. Students named to the Dean's List have achieved a 3.5 grade point average in 15 or more semester hours.

    Catawba Chiefs Club Cranks Up 2010-2011 Membership Drive

    Catawba College's Chiefs Club began its 2010-2011 membership drive on June 1 with a goal of 525 members, and membership renewal information has been mailed to all 2009-2010 members. A Chiefs Club membership supports the 83 full athletic scholarships Catawba sponsors for approximately 450 student athletes playing one of its 18 NCAA Division II sports.

    June 17 Interest Meeting for Catawba College's Bachelor's Degree Completion Program at Davidson County Community College

    Catawba College's School of Evening and Graduate Studies will hold a drop-in interest meeting regarding Catawba's Bachelor's Degree Completion Program on the main campus of Davidson County Community College from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17. The meeting will be held in the Conference Center Building at DCCC, Room 202.

    Tar Heel Boys' State at Catawba College June 20-26

    Catawba College will host the 71st annual session of Tar Heel Boys' State June 20-26. This is the seventh consecutive year that the weeklong event has been held on campus and approximately 300 participants, all rising high school seniors from North Carolina, are expected.     Catawba College Gets $100,000 Grant to Help Retain First-Generation College Students

    Catawba College has applied and been awarded a $100,000 grant to help strengthen its programs that support the education of first-generation college students. Catawba was one of 30 Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) member colleges and universities selected through a competitive application process to receive the grants funded by the Walmart Foundation to receive 2010 CIC/Walmart College Success Awards.     Colum McCann to Speak at Catawba College's 2011 Brady Author's Symposium

    Author Colum McCann, winner of the 2009 National Book Award for his novel, "Let the Great World Spin," will be the featured speaker at the 25th annual Brady Author's Symposium scheduled Thursday, March 3, 2011. McCann's other novels include "Zoli," "Dancer" "This Side of Brightness," and "Songdogs," as well as two story collections. His work has been published in 30 languages.

    Catawba Continues to Help Sponsor Summer Reading Challenge

    71st Consecutive Session of Tar Heel Girls State to Be Held at Catawba College

    June 13-19 will be the 71st consecutive year of Tar Heel Girls State, and for the ninth year, Catawba College will host the weeklong session. At the annual event, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of North Carolina, several hundred girls from across North Carolina, all high school juniors who are academically in the top third of their class, will participate.

    Catawba College's Business Advisory Board Welcomes New Chair

    Catawba College's Business Advisory Board for the Ketner School of Business has a new chair. Robert M. Van Geons, CEcD., executive director of the Salisbury–Rowan Economic Development Commission since January of 2008, succeeds Joey Popp as chair of the 30-member board.

    Catawba College to Add Women's Lacrosse

    Catawba College announced today that women's lacrosse is being added to its athletics program. The announcement was made by Dr. W. Craig Turner, president, and Dennis Davidson, director of athletics. With the addition of lacrosse, which will begin play in the 2011-12 school year, Catawba will field nine varsity women's sports.

    10th Annual Collegiate "RecycleMania" Competition Announces Final Results

    607 Colleges and Universities Nationwide Compete to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The ruckus heard across college campuses this spring was not just because of the NCAA basketball tournament. It was also RecycleMania season. Every spring, students across the country become RecycleManiacs competing for national supremacy to determine which school can reduce, reuse and recycle the most campus waste.
